Personally? I'm a huge fan of all of Tamora Pierce's works, from her Tortall books to her Circle of Magic Books. To get into the series or for younger readers, "The Circle of Magic" and the "Song of the Lioness" quartets are the begginings of the series, but the longer and best of her books would be...
