Yeah, I'm pretty sure the comic doesn't care about accuracies. Lots of fiction don't care about accuracy, and who knows? Maybe the Housepets! world developed differently. That, and smilodons are presumably just as sentient as everything else and thus could have resisted the factors that killed them...
