I wonder if this is why Karishad's Facebook account was deleted.

Would this also mean the Housepets! page would need to be taken down - or any other groups for that matter?

No. Groups are under different rules.

very silly, and is kind of rude to people who don't want to use their real names.

That was the rule when I signed up (in 2005), too. Had it changed?

I think it has been more heavily enforced as well.

How would they know? I have a Facebook account that has absolutely no tethering to my name. No links to it, nothing. I have checked it in a long time though so I don't know what has become of it.

Other users report them. Facebook doesn't really search for them because people can have some pretty unusual names, but if you happen to know that someone is using a fake name, you can report it.

I was considering making an account for Furrhan so I could follow my online furriends and have that separate from my real account. Guess I can't now. I do have a twitter for Furrhan though and that seems to be okay.

But yeah, from what I've heard it's always been the rule but it's just being either more enforced or there's media attention being brought to it now.

Personally I see good things and bad things on both sides of the argument.

Don't have a Facebook. Don't plan on getting one.

Have a FaceBook, and JUST when I sent Karishad a friend request, his FaceBook was deleted.

What kind of toolshed reports Karishad as being a fake name?

I think I might have made a Facebook account, long ago. I definitely didn't use my real name. Nor would I want to; even most people I know in person call me "DM".

I think there was a fake account made and maybe someone reported both?

If Kari adopts an Indian surname or another that sounds like it matches, maybe nobody will notice it's a fake name?

Karishad Naresh Yadav. There, sounds convincingly real. Take that, Zuckerberg!

I think it was a combination of both. Someone was jealous that the real Karishad graced FaceBook with his presence and reported him and they deleted his name because they new that it wasn't a real name.

Facebook has always annoyed me for some reason. While I do actually have a Facebook account which does have my real name, I very rarely use it. Having to use my real name was a small part of what annoyed me about it.

Karishad is already a Native American name. It's Paiute for "fox."

I don't even get the logic behind requiring real names. close friends and family use nicknames a lot, requiring the real name actually makes the friendships seem less real.

I believe it's geared toward minimizing impersonation and harassment.

More cynical people suspect it's to improve data mining.

I have a principle where I don't add "furry" Facebook friends anyway. Sorry, friends who wanted to add me but don't have a normal Facebook! D:

I think I only added one person from the internet to my Facebook account, I try to not do that to much. Usually for security sake.

I wonder if this would also affect entities like organizations and companies who use a user account instead of a page in Facebook. My org kinda does that. XD

I imagine that if it looks like a company name, it'll probably be fine. Probably.

That's how I take care of keeping my character on Facebook, as a community page. There's other ways too, like creating a facebook page for a "fictional character". These pages are managed and tied to your real name account, but I don't think your name account shows up on the fictional character account. In your real name account, there is a place to identify your furry character name as a sub name. I'm also quasi-careful about who I add to my friends list, though there are quite a few furry people on my list, but they are generally people who I have interacted with in some sort of capacity. Dozens of requests get ignored or declined each month, however.

As far as I know, Facebook has never allowed for fictional aliases / anonymous users since it's inception.

What companies use user accounts? I imagine pages give them options that make it better for them.

I'd imagine smaller ones maybe. Ones that might not have enough customers to fully utilize a dedicated page. I don't really know.

Pages don't cost anything to set up, but you do typically need someone who's going to run the page, update it and deal with the social media part of it. That can cost money.

Anyway, Karishad is back on FaceBook but under the name "Douglas Fox", however he is private.

To be precise, there are gangs who go around looking for and reporting accounts.

My account lasted several years until a group started reporting accounts that matched Second Life names.

Lately they've been reporting Native American names. Cory Doctorow just posted a tweet about that. Let me see...

Facebook tells Native Americans that their names aren't "real"
Dissension wrote:I believe it's geared toward minimizing impersonation and harassment.
It doesn't do a very good job of that. Failbook and other sites critical of Facebook regularly repost the most horrible stuff people seem quite willing to say under their own names. I agree with Sleet - they want to have real names to better sell users to advertisers.

And yet, FB still fills my spam folder with requests whether I know "Izumi Coke Shadowclaw" from Winnebago (ssuuuuure).

GRATE job, guys, just grate!

FaceBook chooses which accounts they want to ban and keep. I think it depends on people choosing who they report instead of them reporting all weird names.
