Hotep, I think. He seems to be doing a decent job of running the battle.
Possibly Roarin too.

I've been thinking. There seem to be as many crew interactions in this game as there are rat. What would you guys think if I made Pepito an NPC too (since I haven't used him in ages) and created a whole new second character for me to play who can join the crew at the port? That way I have fingers in both pies and I might be able to be a little more active.

Sounds good.

I'll give Roarin another day or two and then I might need to poke him.

Don't forget, any pets on the other boat will be seen as loot by the crew.

This RP is set in the early days of modern naval warfare, so now let us visit the end of the naval gun as the primary weapon of a fleet at war: http://www.nps.gov/goga/historyculture/new-gun.htm

I don't think the _Impudence_ could float that gun.

Probably not. :P That gun dates from the 1900s-1940s though so it wouldn't have to fit on a tiny sailing ship anyway.

Well, not quite anything. We're making this as historically accurate as we can. I think Argent just put that picture in for interest's sake.

Yes, I don't think loading a projectile that weighs a tonne even without including the propellant would be practical for the crew of a wooden ship.

Name: Ariel Clair
color: #00BFFF

Gender:

Specie: White Lion

Appearance: Ariel is a male white lion with black ear tips, a black nose, and a black tail tip. He has pink paw pads, and his inner ear is pink. His eyes are blue (which the image provided doesn't show), and he wears a posh red and yellow jacket his father gave him.
HNI_0076_MPO.JPG
HNI_0076_MPO.JPG (51.43 KiB) Viewed 12343 times
(sorry for the bad quality '///')

Personality: Ariel is a natural born leader and very caring (despite appearances). If a friend is in trouble, he will try talking to the problem before beating it to a pulp (He won't resort to violence unless forced to).

Likes: Vegetables
Dislikes: Meat

Backstory: Ariel was a young lion that had been born on the sea. During a bad storm, Ariel was forced to jump off the ship so that he might have a slim chance of surviving (which he did). Some people say he swam to France, others say he used the wreckage from the destroyed ship to hold himself up. Both stories are true.

After being found on shore of France, the white lion was sold to the highest bidder for his fur. Luckily, Mr. and Mrs. Clair bought him and kept him as a son.

Fast forward to 13 years later.
Mr. Clair has sent a family friend, Louis Apollaire, to manage his over sea's business. Ariel chose to accompany Louis on his journeys hoping for some adventure. After taking a large shipment to a small island, Louis and Ariel now wait for their next ship to take them back to France.

Other Notes: Ariel didn't have any problems with pets in France, but the children constantly insulted him for having a "Feminine name". Little do the know what his name actually means.

My original guidelines didn't allow anything as big as a lion, but that's up to Hlaoroo now.

He seems a great character but I'm not sure that a lion fits with this RP. Lions, being cats, need a lot of protein and a lot of meat to survive and due to their size, they need a lot more than domestic cats. I really don't think they'd do well on limited rations on a ship. I also don't think Palgrave is one to take passengers, especially given the less-than-legal status of his ship. Sorry. ;) He really is a great character but perhaps Exotic Acres might be a better fit for him.
Please feel free to make and submit another character sheet for here though. ;)
You did a great drawing too, by the way!

Yes, Kimba was my inspiration.
And apparently (based on Behind the Name), Ariel ment "lion of god". Apollair also had something to do with lions.

So the only pets allowed are dogs and cats?

No, you can have foxes, wolves, otters, monkeys, anything like that. You could also have a bird but remember they're bird shaped and therefore have no hands. You could also have a rat, so long as Palgrave doesn't find out. ;)

Small animals because it's a ship with limited resources, and the only wild ones are ones that are easy to tame so could have been brought over from Europe, or ones that are likely to be found in South America or the southern part of North America.

One avian possibility that would be entirely in keeping with a Caribbean pirate would be a parrot. Now I think of it, I'm amazed nobody's thought of that one.

I didn't want to make something so over used like foxes, wolves, cats, and dogs. I already have an otter, and I hate monkeys. I really wanted something unique, but its fine.

I may think of a new character, but I doubt I'll join.

You know, we did just stop at an island populated by agouti which are like cat-sized rats. One of them could easily have stowed away, looking for adventure. Or you could be any other Caribbean species that stowed away or was owned by someone that we can get aboard.

Up to you though, Either way, thanks for your interest in this RP. ;)

Small "big cats" and big small cats in south, central, and southern North America:

Puma/Mountain Lion/Florida Panther
Ocelot
Margay
Oncilla
Jaguarundi
Bobcat

Other cool South American species:

Coati
Kinkajou
Tayra (kind of an arboreal otter)
Ringtail Cat/Cacomistle
Yapok (kind of a cross between a possum and an otter)

Capuchins and other New World primates
Agouti and other Rodents of Unusual Size (cue Princess Bride theme)

Well, Ariel is vegan. In the show, Kimba can go for days without food, so Ariel should be able to do the same.

I had a small idea with a charismatic rat, but I don't see how I could rp as him.

Re: 17th Century Fox - OOC

by Hlaoroo
Sorry but this is closer to the real world. It's true that lions can go for a couple of days without eating but they'll need a big feed after it so it can't be a regular thing. Also, cats need taurine, a protein found in meat and which they can't make themselves unlike most other species so vegan cats don't go very well at all without special supplements which didn't exist back in the day. Sorry.

You can certainly RP as a rat. We have two communities of rats that live on the ship and which are supposed to be preyed upon by the pets but which some pets support. We currently have four players who RP as rats. In fact, my characters here are both rats, not counting the NPCs. So that would definitely work.

Meh, I don't think I'd be good with rats.
But if this is supposed to be more realistic, why have pets on a pirate ship to begin with? Their too hard to take care of, and back in the day, dogs off the street were treated like your average vermin, so why bring MORE vermin onto a ship? Wouldn't the pets just get under everyone's feet? What about anxiety from confined spaces such as the ship?
Cats dislike too much motion, yet there are some on the boat.

What I'm getting at is that this neighborhood isn't natural to begin with, so why not allow the lion on board? And do we need to stay with the natural feeding protocols? Why can't we just let Ariel eat the amount a human would?

Pets in the Housepets! world are more useful than pets in our world. They've got them working on the sails (cats climb well), keeping the vermin under control (though the cats went kind of nuts on that earlier), and even working on the gun deck (dogs fetch gunpowder as well as anything else). But they still have to work their way, and be worth more than what they eat. The biggest animal aboard is an ocelot, and Captain Palgrave is planning on selling him as soon as he finds a buyer... he's an investment because he's so exotic.

Like I said it's up to Hlaoroo. I put that rule in as much for game balance as anything else, but it also makes sense to me.

I really do like Ariel as a lion. I don't think he'd be any better if played by a different specie.

I can try to make a new character, but please reconsider Ariel first.

My problem is that if I make an exception for you then I have to make an exception for everybody else and that could really change the feel of the RP...

There's also this issue which I raised earlier and I don't think you've addressed yet.
Hlaoroo wrote:I also don't think Palgrave is one to take passengers, especially given the less-than-legal status of his ship.
Ariel and his owner would have to be willing to stay on as crew if they want to get onto Palgrave's ship...

I'll tell you what. Lions were known in England and Europe from very early on anyway so I guess it is conceivable that one may have somehow found its way to the Americas.
I can also allow him to like vegetables and fruits, and I can see him surviving on limited rations like a human but it's just not conceivable that he can be a vegan. He'd have to eat some meat, even if grudgingly, in order to survive.
So, if you can answer the above concern and make him a wanna-be vegan rather than an actual vegan then I might just allow him.

Bear in mind also that given that he is so exotic, he will most likely be treated as such by the crew and pets. Would that be a problem for you?

One other little thing. If he's a natural-born leader then I think his charisma ought to be a little higher than 5. ;)

So, yeah, if you can fix up/answer those few things then I'll consider allowing him. How does that sound?

Man, all these awesome charismatic New World mammals aren't good enough for you!

How about having him marooned in Castillo Pato with no ship willing to carry him, and his owner has to convince Captain Palgrave and Juan Acosta that the box of doubloons he's offering to get out of this dump are worth the risk of having an "Oh my lord it's a Lion get in the longboat!" on the Impudence.

That could tie into Captain Palgrave's trip to Havana to sell the ocelot.

I was assuming that his age is around 14-15 given that we fast-forwarded to 13 years later and he'd had a bit of time before that. Is that human years though, Neon?

Argent: I'll have to see if I can get ahold of MoonHowler before Patrick gets sold...

Hotep: If you have ideas, feel free to share them either here or via PM with me and Neon. It's his character after all so he should be included. ;)
