What's Christopher's last name? He would also have been given a Berber name, as was traditional for the corsairs.

His last name is Tanzir.

Captain Palgrave has perhaps a good heart under his piratical affability. Eduardo Xavier, not so much.

So, will Blacks disarm the little fox, and end the duel quickly, or does she have hidden reserves of martial skill?

On the beach, the sequence starts about here.

They're on the beach because Captain Palgrave wanted to give Christopher Tanzir a chance to prove himself, but Mr. Xavier thinks making his fox fight with Blacks the height of sophisticated humor.

So, some humans and a few pets went to the island, right? Does that include Patrick, because I'm really confused where he is right now.

It's up to you where Patrick is, you can put him anywhere that seems reasonable from the narrative. If Blacks went to the island, then Patrick probably did too, but maybe he did something else.

20 reales is two and a half spanish dollars, and would have been almost three months wages for an unskilled laborer.

Call it a few thousand dollars in today's terms.

Maybe Christopher's got some jewelry he can sell.

There might be something in the camp, because he probably has something valuable from being with the corsairs.

I suspect that he'd have kept it on his person, sewn into the lining of his belt or other piece of durable clothing, that was typical for the time. I can't imagine him walking away from anything valuable when he headed out to the boat, not knowing if he was going to come back. He's probably got some money in his purse as well.

I'm going to have to do some more digging, I'm getting inconsistent numbers from different documents, the debt might not be that bad.

A good 17th century belt has two layers of leather or a layer of leather and a layer of heavy cloth, and it was pretty easy to unpick part of the stitching and dig a hole in the leather to hide small valuables.

Ok, there was a lot of inflation in the 16th and 17th centuries, due to the influx of precious metals from the Spanish conquests. A Spanish dollar, in this part of the world, might not be more than a few day's work. So call it a few hundred dollars, not a few thousand.

That's probably worth a good deal more than his debt. But it's up to James.

Interesting, Patrick has had some European training, since he's using daggers instead of a wood and obsidian sword.

The gold in the ring was probably worth a couple of escudo, say five dollars, the real value in it would be the gems.

8 silver real to a dollar (a silver "piece of eight") Two dollars to gold escudo, 8 escudo to a gold dubloon.

The real was worth 6-8 English pennies, depending on the rate of silver to copper. The spanish copper coin (maravedi) was no longer used due to inflation... it would be about 1/6-1/4 of a penny.

The only reason Patrick is using daggers right now is because that's what he has in hand ('acquired' them from the boat he was in). I don't remember if we stopped by any port so that Patrick could acquire the materials for his own weapons. Besides, Patrick has a bit of a ... unique choice of weaponry - you'll see it soon enough

There's probably not too many large mammals on a small island, lots of birds, rivers with freshwater fish in them would be a change from the otter's usual fare.

Let's see, after digging through Wikipedia and looking at lots of Caribbean islands: there's bats, agouti and smaller rodents, lots and lots of lizards. Plus long-dead humans if you can find them among the ruins.

When you get to the mainland there's some REALLY big otters in South America. :)

to explain the post a bit further blacks is using a very old style fire breather technique where sulfer powder or other friction ignited powders are rubbed together and blown into to create a flame, this changed to a oil spitting technique due to the loss of said materials to due so and a large accident in Europe where a man exploded from carrying too much. the powders react together for a long time burning in the palm and is blown out expanding the flame, this was used in Arabia, china, Europe and parts of south American culture. how blacks has these powders is hidden within his fur.

So, two foxes and an ocelot head into the jungle. What will they find? Ruins? A lost otter? The fountain of youth? A tribe of rodents holding Moses and Lawrence hostage? Probably not the fountain of youth.

Tiki is in the forest by himself, he's discovered a badly damaged pre-columbian ruin.

Patrick, Dune, and Blacks are in the forest collecting materials for Patrick to make weapons he's more comfortable with.

Gulley, Tackle, and Pinch are in the forest, near a little stream.

Jerome is alone in the longboat.

Moses and Lawrence are drifting downstream, squabbling over Lawrence's girlfriend Maria.

There's one more dog on the beach. Forgot who.

Everyone else is still back on the Impudence.

Do I have it all right?

"well i have nothing better to do" pinch says laying down on the boat.
See, this is what has me confused. Also wondering why Gulley and Tackle had to hide to get to the river, and why Pinch could just walk across.
