[Discussion] New Spanish Translation

Post by Profesor Rod »

OK, I'm ready to start this. I want this translation to be the highest quality and I'll need your feedback to achieve that. Spanish is a very tricky language as it has two main branches (Peninsular and American) and lots of regionalisms and slang. I want Housepets to be translated into a neutral Spanish so it can be enjoyed anywhere, so no "chidos", "tios", "majes", etc. (Peninsular only used as an equivalent to an England or Old English equivalent when the plot calls for it).

Some things to keep it tidy :3

1. Release will be weekly in batches of aprox 6 strips.
2. Translated scripts will be posted first and left for revision and feedback for a week.
3. Discussion will be made IN ENGLISH in order to stay with the forums rules.
4. If you want to submit a correction or an alternative translation, quote my post with the related strip and its translation. Put your own text in italics. Notes can follow outside the quote.
5. We will work with the "Refur" versions for the arcs that were black and white. Many thanks to those that work hard in this project. If we catch up with them, for the sake of continuity, we are going to slow down and I'll start contributing on the recoloring as well.
6. Strips that I consider are of enough quality will be posted here and shortly we return to point 2.

The "hail" the "rain-ning" king bad pun is one of my favorites, impossible to translate literally so I made it something like "save our majesty from the rain"
Also "revolting, pigs and cleaning", awful, awful puns XD

Unless demasiado doesn't fit (I noticed Lopika used muy as well).

Does revoltoso play on revolting in Spanish?

The whole thing looks really good to me! :D (with my high school Spanish), but that's my 2 cents.

Yes, one spell error that neither Word or me saw. Thank you very much :)

I picked "muy" because I wanted it to have the same flow as the original. A monosyllabic with a strong emphasis. Probably the same reason Lopiko chose it as well.

On the revolting pun, yeah, I made a word play as well. This one underwent the translation very well.
English: As making a revolution (which is played in the next strip) or being disgusting (cue to curing the plague with a dead pig).
Spanish: "Revoltoso" as in trouble makers or that they are literally naughty and dirty (and then cue again to pigs).
Fun stuff :P

GRAPE: ESPERA, ¿QU . . . TE REFIERES A QUE TODOS USTEDES ESTÁN ACTUALMENTE JUGANDO?
BINO: BUENO DUH, ¿QUÉ, PENSASTE QUE HARÍAMOS TRAMPA? ¡SI NO JUEGAS, ES LO MISMO QUE HACER TRAMPA!

This avoids any gender specificity.

And does the "vivir de ardillas" make the same sort of pun as "live off squirrels"?

This is great! :D Thanks for letting us be a part of this!

It would be lastimera. I think lúgubre works better because of the impending "danger" that is approaching poor peanut, but "Una situación de lástima" could work too and actually sounds good.

Grammatically it is awkward. As a note, repeating "el dolor" again and again is common in tragedy theatre and Bino is being so dramatic :P

Indistinct. Who else votes? "EL NUEVO JUEGO" vs. "EL JUEGO NUEVO"
Obbl wrote:

If you add a comma, "El Juego, quiero decir", your grammar is correct, but it's off the original. "Quiero decir El Juego" is equivalent but as you said doesn't keep with the original. Lopiko used "El juego me dijo" and doesn't back translate to the original (The game told me so). This one is a pain to translate >_< Should I use commas in the title? I can't remember if Rick uses them.

This one is unavoidable >_< Lopiko used "¡QUEMEN AL HEREJE!" and has the same problem. The problem here is that Spanish is very gender specific. Heathen means pagano(a), gentíl, bárbaro(a), idólatra, someone of another religion. I love the joke of an angry mob shouting "Quemen al hereje" or "Empalen al hereje" but that would be adapting. Went with idólatra because it doesn't have a femenine (you can say "el idólatra" and "la idólatra" and it's correct), but then again I'm saying Grape is male with "al", unless I'm using it as the common cliché shouting of an angry mob XD AAAAAA HALP! DX

Yes X3

Actually, looking up lúgubre again, I like it better

Ah, didn't know the connection to theatre. Leave it then.

Rick uses at least one comma in the titles. A more recent comic is "Also Stripe, I Mean Seriously"

Is there a reason we can't use my suggestion of "Queme, Idólatra" which avoids using the el?
Instead of "Burn the heathen!" it becomes "Burn, Heathen!"
It has the same idea behind it, but says it a bit differently.

Oh. "Queme, idólatra" sounded unnatural but now that you say it's "Burn, heathen" it should be "Quémate, idólatra" or "Arde, idólatra". It sounds VERY good and quite evil. Poor Grape

Quiero decir El Juego

GRAPE: ¿PERO QUÉ—TENGO PUESTO UN LETRERO QUE DICE ’FAVOR DE MOLESTAR’ O ALGO ASÍ?
GRAPE: NO ME SORPRENDERÍA ACTUALMENTE.
I think this phrase could sound more spanish, I would translate lile " ya no me sorprendería" the word "actually" translate literally in spanish its weird and usually is replace with "ya" in some context.

You are right. "Actualmente" is used as in "at this time" most of the time and sounds weird here.
I included "ya" like you said but also added "realmente" because Grape is stating that as a "matter of fact".

"¿El futuro ya no es tan impresionante como antes?"
"Ya no me sorprendería realmente."

Can someone explain "Se supone que"? :| It translates to something like "One is supposed to...", except that doesn't really fit, so I'm unsure how to understand this particular grammatical structure.
Also, that happens to be Fox's line (not that that changes anything :D )

And I would have made it ¡JA! since Ah sounds like he's coming to a realization (at least to me it does)

I really enjoy reading these! They're great, and really working out my Spanish ^^

Can someone explain "Se supone que"? :| It translates to something like "One is supposed to...", except that doesn't really fit, so I'm unsure how to understand this particular grammatical structure.
Also, that happens to be Fox's line (not that that changes anything :D )
Wow. I knew something was wrong with "Grape's" tail. It was suspiciously too fluffy and curly. Now the joke is 2x more funny

You're right, but you are taking away the "Qué". "¿Qué se supone que..." translates to something like "What (one) is supposed to..." and "¿Qué se supone que no..." is "What (one) is not supposed to...".

Back translating what I put it says: "Hey Bino, what WE are not supposed to do in that game?"; exactly the same as in English. Notice the "no debemos", it makes the sentence go into negative and in plural first person.

Yeah, ¡JA! sounds more like they are poking fun of it. I was too tired to think of it yesterday.

OH! OK, I didn't realize the "one" was like fill-in-the-blank, so I was translating it as "What is one supposed to we should not do..."
*insert :| *
So I was trying along the lines of "What is it supposed to be that we should not do..." Still a little weird, but doable.

Yay! New comics were posted :3

Now, I have an announcement. Final exams are upon me and so, next weekend there will be no translations. I'll resume June 19th. Wish me success D:

This way it sounds more grammatically correct, the words required an extra connector.

That's all I will check now, I'm really tired, maybe later I'll continue checking.

Alas, we have not heard from Profesor Rod in a long while :( (The Spanish Project appears cursed <_<)

Nice catch on that first one, Ryuji ;)

As for the second one, the original is Plague Zombies. Not a Plague of Zombies.
In English it's reeeeeally easy for us to cram nouns together as descriptors without any connectors. (Cause we're lazy like that :D )
Plague Zombies is more like "Zombis de la Plaga" or possibly "con la Plaga" or even both (assuming you call "The Black/Bubonic Plague" "The Plague(La Plaga)" like we do ;) ) So Profesor Rod used "Zombis Plaga" to mirror our use of "Plague" as an adjective.

It´s just that "plague" isn't an adjective in Spanish. It sounds weird being used that way, and people who do not speak English probably won't understand it or will be confused.

First Arc.

On the First Strip, Second Panel: I think is better to use "Lamentable" instead of "Lastimero", becuase Lastimero is less used.
On the Second Strip, Third Panel: You can use "Que se haga la Lluvia".
Third Strip, Panel 4: It´s somewhat tricky the translation "Ambos se empalaron en sus propias espadas" I think is better "Ambos se han empalado con sus propias espadas"
Fourth Strip, Second Panel: Delegaciones.... ¿Con Piratas? - Negociaciones.....¿Con Piratas?

Second Arc.

Second Strip,Second Panel: "¡NO HAY NUNCA UNA SALIDA, NUNCA UNA ESCAPATORIA!"
I think using "Jamas" Is more dramatic.¡NO HAY JAMAS UNA SALIDA, JAMAS UNA ESCAPATORIA!.
Third Strip, First Panel: "Ya no soprenderia realmente" I think she is refering to something that happened before. Maybe you can use:
"No me sorprenderia realmente".
Fourth Strip, Last Panel: I think you can use "Ayudame si esto es una indicacion de como sera mi dia..." instead of "QUE ME AYUDEN SI ESTO ES CUALQUIER INDICACIÓN DE CÓMO VA A SER MI DÍA . . ."
Fith Strip, Last Panel: "Y AÚN ASÍ INTENTASTE LA RAZÓN DE TODAS FORMAS."

On the Strip The Great Outdoors on the First Panel you can use only "Mascotas" instead of "Mascotas de Casa", because Mascotas are used to refer to pets.

Btw im from Tampico, Tamaulipas

I liked "Arde, idolatra" and "Arde, Hereje" it's no gender related.

Thanks for your input Alex. :)
Unfortunately Profesor Rod has been a no-show for the past few months, so until someone else is willing to continue the project, it is on hold. :(

I have to disagree with you on a few points though:
Alex M. wrote:Fourth Strip, Second Panel: Delegaciones.... ¿Con Piratas? - Negociaciones.....¿Con Piratas?
I think "Delegaciones" should remain because it's what Grape used earlier so it works like...
"¿DELEGACIONES? ESTO SE ESTÁ PONIENDO ABURRIDO."
"... DELEGACIONES . . . ¿CON PIRATAS?"
Alex M. wrote:Fourth Strip, Last Panel: I think you can use "Ayudame si esto es una indicacion de como sera mi dia..." instead of "QUE ME AYUDEN SI ESTO ES CUALQUIER INDICACIÓN DE CÓMO VA A SER MI DÍA . . ."
I don't have a preference one way or another on most of this, but I think the "cualquier" is important. Grape puts a big emphasis on "any" when she says it in English "So help me if this is ANY indication of how my day is going to go!" And you just can't get that kind of emphasis out of "una" ;)
Alex M. wrote:On the Strip The Great Outdoors on the First Panel you can use only "Mascotas" instead of "Mascotas de Casa", because Mascotas are used to refer to pets.
While this would be true if they were just talking about "pets", they're distinguishing between indoor and outdoor pets, so "de casa" is important.

But either way this doesn't change anything because we don't have anyone currently working on this :(

Hi! I would like to contribute with the translation project! I t seems that it has somehow... stopped... Anyway, I prepared this translation for the next two panels of the Cat tail Arc.

Cola de gato

It can be as follows for http://www.housepetscomic.com/2008/07/1 ... od-artist/

Title: Artista incomprendido

First pannel
Grape: Peanut!
Peanut: ¡Eehhm! ¡No deberías verlo!

Second pannel

Fourth pannel
Grape: Estás enfermo.
Peanut: ¿Y ahora que hice?

Also for http://www.housepetscomic.com/2008/07/1 ... n-ostrich/

First pannel

Hi! Again. I wrote this today, so I hope you like it. Its the entire Cat tail Arc (Adding of course my previous post).

URL: https://www.housepetscomic.com/2008/07/ ... ne-either/
Title: Un gato tampoco estaría bien

First pannel

URL: https://www.housepetscomic.com/2008/07/ ... your-mind/
Title: Bordeando la clasificación B EN TU MENTE

First pannel
Joey: ¿Peanut? ¿Pu-puedo ver tu dibujo?
Peanut: Joey, ¿te gustan los gatos?

Second pannel

Third pannel
Peanut: ¿En serio? Es bueno escuchar finalmente un comenta...
Joey: Quiero ponerme su piel.

Fourth pannel
Peanut mira estupefacto.

URL: https://www.housepetscomic.com/2008/07/30/hey-dude/
Title: Hola tipo

First pannel

Third pannel
Peanut: ¡Oh!

URL: https://www.housepetscomic.com/2008/08/ ... -for-dogs/

First pannel
Grape: Peanut, Peanut, tranquilo.

Second pannel

Digo, a Joey pareció gustarle mucho... demasiado.

Fourth pannel

URL: https://www.housepetscomic.com/2008/08/ ... a-nowhere/
Title: Bola curva de la nada

First pannel

Third pannel
Grape camina fuera del panel mientras Peanut voltea sorprendido.

Fourth pannel
Peanut: ¿¡Eres una chica!?

URL: https://www.housepetscomic.com/2008/08/ ... long-time/

First pannel

Grape: Marigato.

Fourth pannel
Peanut: Quiere decir que eres hombre.
Grape: ¡Ya sé lo que dije!

URL: https://www.housepetscomic.com/2008/08/ ... -platonic/
Title: Juro que es platónico

First pannel
Grape: Mira. No importa si soy una chica. Sigo siendo Grape.

Fourth pannel
Peanut queda totalmente ruborizado.

Isn't this is the discussion topic? , can't this be put here? rather then having it separated in two places, or is this more like the typing and that the comic itself :P?

No, someone told me that this was the right place for it, so I've typed it twice (Only the first post) because i thought that no one was going to read it. Sorry, I'm a newbie : ) .

That's okey, I did not mean to direct this question at you.
I am just pointing out having tree different topics for a Spanish Translation might be really confusing for new members trying to read them from the start.

I think this should be for discussion and the other one only for reading the traslated comic.

Is there another topic for spanish traslation besides this one and this \/
