Welsh Halfwit wrote:"I always find live performances are so much more... nuanced than recorded," Francis admitted after getting back to business with his own food. "I especially love the comedies where one of the leads deliberately tries to get the others laughing."
"Hm. I am not a buff of a favorite subgenre of comedies -except the likes of 'american pie'. I don't mind some audacity, but I like a spontaneous laugh. Like in that movie, 'Airplane', or in the first 'Addams Family' series."

He seemed to purr and roll with his voice, even though he physically couldn't, pressing against her cheek then walking her to the car that would take them where they were going. He held her tight, expressing some combination of puppy love and romance.
The happy couple left her apartment, finding a floating, wheel-shaped car waiting for them. As Nesse got up first, she asked, "Now that you have a job, how do you plan to make the best use of it, rogue?"

"So? You're still all heart. You rescued your damsel from the eternal sleep. Your soul is what matters, here." She tapped his chest where his heart, if he had one, should be. "And you need someone like everyone else, eh?"

Roux stepped in after her and sat down, smiling wistfuly into the distance. "I had nearly forgotten honestly. Well, I'll start by becoming a trusted part of my community. Maybe win a couple hands, maybe loose a couple. Make sure they know I can mix, and that I can sing. Then I'll go into the kitchens, sneak a bit of Cajun taist into the food, get them hooked. Within a month it will be mine."

"Mind me, Beta, Tom, in my own field of work, I must be as much detached as possible. *Every* single new idea is just that, a more or less living tool for something that goes far beyond my personal likes and dislikes.
"On Mars, a world whose atmosphere *is* a single layer of CO2 at a severe subzero temperature, a single, tiny accident in a delicate, strictly controlled environment requires immediate answer. Beta has a relevant advantage given his unique and fascinating nature, but once torpor sets in, his utility in a crisis becomes null. Do you remember that movie, "The Martian", when the decompression chamber exploded and blew half of the astronaut's shelter? That accident was caused by the simplest mistake, a defect in the production of the fabric, a defect that, use after use of the chamber, caused an explosive decompression. At that point, the sector is flooded with pure CO2. And if it happens at night, Beta would have even less energy stored to funcion at his best. Torpor sets in quite rapidly. And the only specimen who should fix things becomes useless.
"For this reason, robots are unanimously favored as support, while other chimeras are...guinea pigs. Yes, they are perfectly aware that they have been created for a single purpose, so that the best breed can be cloned until either we will be ready to terraform a whole planet -and that will take many generations, or we will have to concede to the impossibility of such a plan and extend the colonies to cover a global, radioactive desert.
"The Martians of the future will not be like you or I, Tom. They will be a whole different species, the Blue Mars Project must see to that.
"Again, in this context, a chimera like Beta will set the standard for when the new colonies will be a safer place, or even if the terraformation will work, since the new atmosphere will never be sufficiently thick to support human life as we know it, but as of now no. And I wasn't insulting him, nor his designers. I am simply stating a fact."
He sipped from a glass of low-alcohol wine.
Beta tried to suppress it, but he couldn't hold back his tears. He knew he was made for one thing, and he's spent his whole life trying to prove that he's more than an experiment. He hugged Tom tighter and cried. At least, he did until Tom started pounding on his back.
"W-what?" He sobbed.
"Air!"
Beta apologized and let go. "I-if I'm s-so useless..." He couldn't finish. The tiger just shook his head and ran out the door.
"Well done." Tom said, rubbing his ribs. "You managed to make a grown man cry, a cat cry, and an endangered species cry all at once. Congratulations, I think that is a new record." He snarked before running after Beta.
"It's not my job to seek the truth.
It's not my job to pick a side.
It's not my job to judge your sins.
It's my job to save your life."

Roux grinned and nodded. "Well yeah, I got on this boat because of a hand of cards. That's how I'd like to win every battle, you know?" He grinned and nodded at him.

The car stopped in front of their eatery. As they dismounted, Nesse teasingly tickled Roux' chin. "Win a battle is one thing. Keeping a hold is another. I know something, I spent much time on the battlefields to rescue civilians. And you can't be a good mastermind, if you play your hands alone. So, are you already thinking about your trusty staff?"

Welsh Halfwit wrote:"I shall have to learn," Francis admitted. "Although," he added as he stroked Tegans' cheek, "I habe this feeling you could outgeek me in any language."
"Not likely. I depend a lot of the new generation of auto-translators. Without them, we'd be barely able to sort the babel of languages we have aboard. They're very trekkie gizmos, speaking of nerd-y things." She ate another mouthful, this time managing to control her hunger. "Did you have another date ready, aboard?"

The peach-colored cat couldn't just help it: She chuckled at that show. "Oh, dear, did I break you?"

She leaned forward. "Aw, poor rich and famous kitty had planned to spend a looong cruise all alone? Bet that first thing your Dad had announced his presence here, ladies were sending you kinky emails."

Still giggling, Morgana helped him sitting. "Hello? Anyone still there?"

Asur answered with a wicked grin. "Yeah, sure. I'm a specialist in empathy. Now outtamyway!" the doors slid open and off the reptilian went, running like a champ toward the green tiger. Before Beta could do anything to stop him, Asur had lifted the big cat like a sack and was already running along the deck. "Jemmy, I need your talent for a teeensy-weensy favor, so hurry up willya?"

Back in the dining room, the genet anidroid's eyes flashed as he assumed a puzzled expression. "I can do that, but I am not sure the ship's authorities will accept this course of action-" he visibly flinched when he heard the unrepeatable answer he got, then let out a sigh of resignation. "Copy. Complying now...you have the coordinates."
Volken was looking at the genet with a growing apprehension, but before he could give voice to the knot in his stomach, his intradermic communicator buzzed.
The scientist saw the Captain still eating and smiling amiably at her guests. And he saw the volcanic glances she was discretly throwing at him. "Volken," he said using his throat to form the words, without letting them out of his mouth.
It was, as he was fearing, the voice of Security Chief, Maud Gottschalk, who answered with the controlled ire of a star about to go nova. "Volken, your hacker droid just tampered without authorization with one of our escape pods! Care to *explain* that?"
Volken sighed. He knew he had chosen the wrong day to stop with antiacids...

Back on the deck, a door in the nearest escape pod opened. Without stopping, Asur ran for it. "Head down, kittycat, you're in for a rough one!"

Beta was roaring with rage and fighting the android's grip. When the escape pod opened, that fighting increased. "LET ME GO! LET... huh?" he looked down as something caught his eye.

It was Jerry. The top-like gizmo zipped past the two and turned as if to look at them. Quite suddenly, it pulled a rather cartoonishly large buzz saw out of nowhere and launched itself at Asur's face, swinging the saw back and forth. Beta managed to escape Asur's grip in the confusion and he bolted as fast as he could to Tom, who had been following the two ever since Asur got his evil grin. Tom was wearing his goggles, and the extendable eye turned it's glass eyeball onto the android. A bright red laser shot out of the pupil of the glass eye and focused on Asur's forehead. "This thing was designed to cut out tank armor in construction." He said, pointing to the laser eye. "Explain. Now. Or I turn up the heat."

Beta yanked Tom's goggles off of him. "Hey! What...?!" He jammed them on his head. His response to Asur's question was to turn the power on the eye laser up to maximum and fire it directly at the escape pod.

"That enough of an answer for you, you buggy scrap heap?" Beta pulled the goggles off and shoved them into Tom's hands before giving Asur a rather obscene gesture that surprised even Tom. "Let's get out of here, Tom." The two bolted away.

As they ran, Tom popped open the eye and dumped a small wisp of ash out of it that used to be the laser. He looked at Beta. His eyes were burning red with rage and tears. "Are you alright? Did he hurt you?"

Beta didn't reply. The two of them ran back (followed closely by Jerry) to the dining hall, nearly breaking the door down as they stormed in and up to Volken and, right in front of everyone they both roared at him with a savage, feral ferocity.

Inside, the place looked like a luxury diner, surely nothing with the rustic atmosphere of a street food eatery.
Nesse sat down to a table near the window. "And what kind of flavor, precisely? You didn't know about the rescue animals when you boarded, I guess you are improvising right now, eh?"

Her eyes looked like they could shoot lasers themselves, as she burned her gaze into Tom, Beta, Volken, Jemmy, and Asur who was waiting by the door, happily waving his hand at his creator. Alarms were ringing on the deck as mainteinance squads were hurring toward the damaged area.
Voken sighed and stood up -this couldn't be worse than when Asur had downed a battledrone, making it crash 3 feet from a 5-star general. He hoped... "Jemmy, Asur, with me."

"Choit, look around you." He said, plainly sitting down at the table. "I mean a place that has a culture to it. It doesn't have to be from down home, it just needs to be... REAL." He waived a hand and grinned as he looked at the menu. "No, I had no idea there would be animals that I could make loyal to me when I came on this ship. I didn't even had it when I dead-pan-idly made up my plans on the spot to impress your..." He coughed. "Human female... In any case, I we can just make our own culture here. All during that talk, Morgana's eyes kept growing wider until it looked like they could cover her own skull...
Then she squealed and hugged Niner! "EEEEE, I can play the ghost and change look and be a-la-mode whenever I want. EEEEE! Thank you so MUCH!"
And yes, she could be unexpectedly strong despite her age and build...
And then she stopped as a horn blared thrice, loud, before a woman's voice said, "YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE! THIS IS CAPTAIN SMITH TALKING: UNFORTUNATELY, DUE TO AN ACCIDENT TO ONE OF OUR LIFEBOATS, THIS SHIP'S MAIDEN VOYAGE WILL BE POSTPONED AT 06.00 OF TOMORROW MORNING. WE DEEPLY APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENT. THE MANAGEMENT WILL THROW AN 'EARLY LIGHT' PARTY. THANK YOU."
Morgana let go of Niner. "Uh? Aw, I wanted to dance under the moonlight. What happened?"

Welsh Halfwit wrote:"I've not bothered checking," Francis demurred. "I much preferred getting out and meeting real beautiful girls like you."
She pointed at him with her fork. "Nice save, champ. You earned extra snuggles for this. Now let's finish before the play--"
And then she stopped as a horn blared thrice, loud, before a woman's voice said, "YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE! "Now, that's what I call--" Tegan started, before her earpiece buzzed. Her expression and voice immediately took a professional tone. "Tegan. Yes, ma'm...Oh! Yes, I see. Coming right now." She napped her mouth then stood up. She looked upset and sorry at the same time. "I'm truly sorry, but...a passenger went haywire big time, security staff is being called for an emergency meeting. I'll keep you posted ASAP."

And whatever Nesse wanted to say, she stopped as a horn blared thrice, loud, before a woman's voice said, "YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE! The music resumed. Nesse grinned at Roux. "I hope you didn't start it, whatever it was, eh?"

Security Ward...
"First and foremost," the Captain said in a no-nonsense cold voice, after turning off the intercom, "I'd like sharp, clear answers from you. First to ramble, first to detention. Am I clear? Now..." she looked at the tiger. "Beta, right? You used a live wapon on a lifepod and basically reduced it to a mass of molten metal and ashes. Care to explain?"

Beta said nothing. He sat down and buried his face in his paws, sobbing. Tom wrapped an arm around him in a hug. "Please, ma'am. He's still in shock. That android there grabbed him and attempted to force him into what I can only assume was a hacked escape pod. By its design it seemed like it was only supposed to open in an emergency. We were both afraid. I was afraid I wouldn't ever see him again." He said, hugging Beta tighter. "The 'weapon' in question was never meant to be one. I used it as a tool to cut silicon carbide components into shape. It's supposed to only have a range of about two feet, but... I was afraid I'd loose my friend. I took off the safety mechanism limiting its range because I thought I might have to use it against the android. He was demonstrating unstable thought patterns at the best and hostile ones at the worst. Knowing AIs, he wasn't going to give up there, and it didn't sound like the laser would stop him. Beta knew this as well and hit the escape pod instead so that if the android decided he didn't like us leaving, he still wouldn't be able to carry out the kidnapping." He finished explaining. "Please, ma'am. This has been such a hard and terrifying experience for him. I can help repair the pod within the day if you will allow me to."

Smith's gaze went to Volken.
"Ma'm, I can assure you, the integrity of my AIs' logic system has not been affected and it works within its parameters. Admittedly, though, I do not know why Asur took such course of action, but he would never cause unduly harm. He *is* a Mobile Multi-Integrated Weapon System, but he is not programmed to be proactive without a strategical plan."
"In other words," Smith said, "you don't know why your wardroid had taken a special interest in Beta."
Volken sighed. "Correct. I can only guarantee no harmful course of action could have come out of this, or Jemmy, who acts as Asur's counterpart, would have never complied."
"I...see. Mr. Volken, would you estimate the intelligence level of your droids to be at human level?"
"I can, ma'm. Their logical modules were developed way before their bodies were."
The woman stood up, hands on the desk top. "In this case, these are my orders for you all:
"First, consider yourselves confined in your apartments for the rest of the night. You will have access to the comm system for emergency only. Try and circumvent that, I will have you sedated, turned off, whatever, for the remainder of the voyage.
"Second, Beta and Asur will be seeing our ship's psychoanalist first thing tomorrow morning, together. I will fix their schedule.
"Third," she looked at Tom, "*you* will not be allowed to carry one single 'tool' of yours outside of your laboratory unless for recreational use. And next time you will have a security problem, contact our own security. And no, you cannot help: God knows we have enough problems as it is. But, in the spirity of equity, the damage repairs costs will be split in half between your employers. Dismissed: We'll see tomorrow."

Tom nodded, simply because he felt like he would vomit if he opened his mouth. The captain's apparent display of favoritism was, to him, disgusting. His friend was nearly kidnapped. Yes, they broke the escape pod. Yes, they caused damage, and yes they deserved what they got. But at least what they did was in self defense. Still, Tom was going to be lucky if he didn't get fired. Meanwhile, Beta's kidnapper, a rouge AI, a living weapon that demonstrated it was out of control and clearly felt it was above the rules got a trip to a psychoanalyst and nothing more. The cold-hearted man who not only started this chain of events, but doesn't care that his own robot is hacking life-pods and kidnapping passengers because it was "working within its parameters" also got off with no punishment. If the parameters allow that kind of behavior, then the parameters were obviously broken and needed changing. And the assumption that Asur's logic would stay stable demonstrated to Tom a severe lack of understanding of learning machines, which of course are able to make changes to their own algorithms if it aids in their end goal. Asur was a weapon. He was built to kill. Whatever he was going to do with Beta, it wouldn't be good.

He wanted to scream at her. Spit at her. Take every scrap of chaos in his being and harness it into a furious explosion...

But he nodded instead. He would discuss this with his boss. This wasn't over. He took Beta's arm and helped him up. Then they headed on their way to their rooms.

Roux blinked at his companion. "Start what?" He asked, confused as he thumped his tail and waited for food.

Tegan blushed. "Whoopsie. Forgot that, sorry."
They already found a maglev 'wheel' waiting for them outside the restaurant. The cat hopped in, waited for Francis to do the same, before telling the droid at the wheel , "Security offices."
The car started. Focused as she was, it took Tegan some moment to see what was the cause of this commotion... "Oh dear," she muttered.
Smoke. A pillar of dark smoke rising high from the other side of the Apollo City. "This is not good..."

Morgana looked around. "Ok, OK, I need a TV, anything, to see where the problem is. I mean, this emergency. I mean, I need to test this ghost thingie..." Then her eyes fell on the not-so-discreet screen hanging on the wall. "Ah! Computer, can you show us what's happening?"
Immediately, the screen stopped showing a beautiful seascape and showed a live take of the droid squads working at the lifepod wreackage.
"Wow!" Morgana said. Used as she was to use her mind as interface with the ship when she was in a coma, it was question of a moment to will herself on that deck...
"Uuuh," she said as she found herself...there! She shuddered at her holographic paws, felt herself, then took a breath to make sure she was still fully alive. The cat was polite enough as not to interrupt the crew with questions, but it was clear this was a real mess.

"That." She pointed at the screen displaying a LIVE feed with the smoke and then the crew working at the wreck.

"In case you felt as if justice weren't 'served', mister," Volken said in a detached tone, his own group walking close to Tom and Beta, "Know that I will dedicate every single minute of this time to understand what got into Asur. And no, my superiors are not going to appreciate this display of initiative. To put it simply, I may in even more trouble than getting a psychiatric evaluation for not foreseeing this apparent behavioral glitch in my own creation.
"If you think that Asur is going Skynet, then relax: He is simply not built for such improvement. And Jemmy's logic modules do not contemplate the seizure of power for world domination. Time and again he proved the futility of such course. While you should be reminded that Beta's actions went way beyond self-defense the moment he destroyed a lifepod out of unchecked rage. While Asur, who had all the means to seize him without a sweat didn't do so. Good night."
He opened the door to his apartment.

After they had levt, the Captain dialed a phone number. Waited a moment before saying, "Doctor Avery? Would you kindly meet me at my office please?"
