"Yeah. If he did he'd be too worried you'd give him the cold shoulder." Socks quips before wincing as Rig's fear courses through him.
"Oof..."
~~~~~~~~
"Er, sorry about calling you an animal before, Eira. It just kind of slipped out when I was counting since you were in wolf form. I know you're not, you know, an animal in the sense we are."
Re: HPU: RGV: Radient Gardens Vineyard
Tony noticed Rig's sudden tension but didn't do or say anything, focusing on driving and getting to the ranch as fast as legally possible, but was preparing himself in case the wolf's panic increased.
Amanda gave a chuckle to Socks' joke, and while she didn't vocalize at all she took notice of Socks' discomfort, letting Kaylee help Socks while she answered Noah's question, keeping an ear on socks and Kaylee, "My family is all over the place, Ireland, New York, France. We've spread out over the years."
Mac gave a wave to Eira as she introduced herself, refraining from turning around as he followed Tony, "Ay, hope my snowflake and her friends have been making you comfortable." At that point he stopped really questioning the appearance of new people around Amanda and her friends.
"Rig. He's terrified." Socks leans forward and puts a paw on the wolf's arm.
"Don't worry, big guy. This is a modern van with airbags so you're quite safe. You're far more likely to be murdered than you are to die in this thing."
~~~~~~~~
"What do you mean?" Holly asks Eira.

Eira closed her eyes. "Remember what I said about animals where I'm from? About the lack of intelligence, no speech, and walking on four legs? That's what I mean."

"Socks," Kaylee mock chided. "Don't worry, Rig. If it was dangerous do you think we'd all get in? It's like riding in a carriage is all." She hoped they hadn't noticed they'd picked up a bit of a tailwind.

Rig let out a nervous exhale, stealing a quick glance at Socks in the rearview mirror. He took another shaky breath as he struggled to translate what he wanted to say, "I do not think, uh, bags of air are going to do much if, um, a thing happens..." His eyes flicked to Kaylee as she spoke up, "Maybe? I do not know." He tensed up as a car passed them going the opposite direction, exhaling as soon as it had passed them. "En, ó, þakka þér,*" he quickly added.
"But, uh, thank you."

"Oh. Well, you'd be surprised the number of people here who consider animals dumb and inferior to humans. Heck, there's a reason they're not considered citizens. Not enough humans think they're worth it."
~~~~~~~~
"What? It's true." Socks says. "But yeah, Kaylee's right. Just a fast carriage equipped with technology to make it safe. You'll be fine."
~~~~~~~~
Sandy pulls his head back in through the car window for long enough to ask just how far it is to Amanda's house.

Kaylee elbowed Socks playfully. "Like you're trying to worry him," she said, just loud enough for him to hear properly.

Re: HPU: RGV: Radient Gardens Vineyard
Amanda looked towards Rig, feeling sorry for the out of place wolf, though a little confused, having thought he was fine in the handful of other car rides prior, "Yeah, it's okay Rig, especially with Tony behind the wheel."
Tony let out a silent sigh, thankful for the others in the car for, at least somewhat, calming down the wolf.
While Mac's confusion over the newest addition grew, he still refrained from questioning the origins of her. Though he wondered where she might come from that has other animals who are as unintelligent as cows... He barely turned his head towards Sandy, more to acknowledge the dog's question than to see him better, "Eh... just a few more minutes I'd say.*"

"What? What am I supposed to say then?" Socks demands.
~~~~~~~~
"Okay then!" Wagging his tail, Sandy sticks his head out the window again to bark at a passing cat who jumps and drops the book he was reading.
~~~~~~~~
"It's not? Humans, animals, what other groups are there? Say, would you vote for human-animal equality, sir?" Holly can't remember Amanda's dad's name so she improvises.

"actually, frustrating your opponent with a stalemate until they give up or run out of resources is a really old tactic. it's called attrition." she corrected, smiling none the less.

Mac shook his head, not wanting to think about Eira's not wolf not human comment, "Touchy subject pets rights, one Ah don't feel qualified to talk about. There should definitely be more, but how far is somethin' Ah can't quite say. So long as no one is hurt Ah'll stand by an listen."
Tony gave a sigh of relief as they approached Amanda's ranch home, wide spaces and a nice sized two story house that Tony parked next to, Mac behind him, "Welcome welcome, please feel free to exit the motor vehicle and await to head inside."
Amanda was one of the first out, excited, though a bit anxious at her friends meeting more of her family, especially the Matriarch. She began to fidget in place outside the car.

Eira climbed out of the car. She looked at the impressive house. "Not bad. Not bad at all. Very nice place." She walked over to Amanda and basically followed the group.

As quickly as he could, Rig unbuckled himself and was out the door. He gave a sideways glance over his shoulder at the van before regaining his composure and walking away from it to join up with the rest of the group.
Noah slid out of his seat and jogged slightly to catch up with Rig. "Are you gonna be ok," he asked as they met up with everyone.
"Yes," Rig replied simply, "Bigger cars just grab at my fears more.
I will explain it later."
"Oh, no, it's okay if you don't want to, we don't-"
"No, it's fine. Anyway, are you excite to talk to the Amanda's family?"

"Yeah, I dunno if I have anything specific in mind though. Mostly I just want to learn about Magic. It's one thing to see all the ancient magic through the artifacts and stuff that mom used to bring home, but to learn about it first hand would be really cool. Maybe she's got some sort of teacher in there or something. Plus, I kinda want to learn how to control aura based magic better, y'know? Maybe get better at the finer details of it I guess," He explained as they waited for the rest of the group to catch up and an invitation to at least approach the house.
"I understand that," Rig agreed, "I have my own secrets to find out too. Though I am not sure of what I will find, I just hope it will be something."

"But that's completely illogical!" Socks objects, trying to ignore his visceral reaction to the motion of Kaylee's paws. "... The cat stares out the window as the house approaches. Compared to his tiny cell at the pound, this is a palace and it elicits a low whistle from him.
"Fancy." he observes, climbing from the van, privately thankful to be away from Kaylee for a few moments. "It feels very calm... Also slightly bored."
~~~~~~~~
"Wow. You sure this is the right place and not, like, a hotel or something?" Holly queries jumping back into Sandy's bag as the dog exits the car.
"It thmellth of catth." Sandy complains to no one in particular, wrinkling his nose after a long sniff.
"One of who-" Bonnie started, before being cut off by Jakes lips on hers. The corners of her mouth turning upward as if in a smile even as she returned the kiss in kind. Holding him close and enjoying the moment as they continue, she doesn't really notice when he goes back to being taller than her until they part. "You're quite good at that you know."
Re: HPU: RGV: Radient Gardens Vineyard
Amanda took a deep breath to calm herself, the imminent meeting between the Matriarch and her friends had her on edge, with no particular cause except a general worry of something going wrong. After taking a moment to gather herself she turned to the pets, and not so pets, gathered in front of her home, "Well... everyone ready to, uh meet the Matriarch?" The two humans seemed content to let the pets go at their own pace, Mac standing off to the side with a serene smile and Tony practically sprawled on the hood of the van, his expression un readable and his emotions more or less neutral to the whole scene.
Some might notice a small presence, the fluttering of curtains inside the house, like someone was watching the group, just out of sight.
Eira turned to Amanda. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw some of the curtains in the house move. She didn't think much of it though, as she already figured with people inside somebody probably would look out the window if they heard someone drive up. "I'm ready." she said.
Amanda hesitated slightly before smiling at Kaylee's reassurance, feeling light frost cover her cheeks, "I'm sure too... Oh and there's not really any formal traditions the Matriarch cares for, just simple civility." She grasped Kaylee's paw that held her wrist lightly, slightly afraid to fully commit to the hold, and turned to start walking to the door, "Let's go see the Matriarch, right?"
No matter how tempting it may be, as a DM I can't both present a problem and solve it.
Every time a DMPC or NPC fixes something a payer couldn't i'm diminishing and undermining that player's contribution.
"Sounds good to me." Eira said as she followed Amanda into the house.
It's my job to save your life."
Jake shook his head. "Oh, sorry Bonnie," he said, "the only restaurants I know are vegetarian ones. I was hoping you'd know of a place." He shrugged. "Or we could just play restaurant roulette and just pick one?"
Bonnie gave a single short, clipped laugh. "I barely leave the station, remember? The only real place I know is the Pizza place Mike and I met at when I first got here." thinking about it a moment, Bonnie weighed her options. She still didn't feel like pizza, and going somewhere Jake knew meant running the risk of finding a place that didn't have anything she liked... that would just lead to a prolonged awkward moment, not how she wanted to end a day that was going surprisingly well despite the odd few setbacks.
It seemed there was nothing else for it. Grinning she answered with, "Well, Lets see how far this little 'adventure' idea you started us on can go."
"Home..." Socks repeats quietly. "We'll see..." He follows the tabby cat across to Amanda, and surprises himself by feeling a flash of jealousy as the ice cat takes her friend's paw. He shrugs it off though, face unreadable as he approaches the house with the group.
"Yeah, Amanda, we've waited long enough. The suspense is killing me! Well, metaphorically anyway." Holly grins from Sandy's satchel.
"So, how do we address her? Just ma'am? Or Her Ladyship or Her Majesty or something?"
"I heard that!" Sandy woofs, poking his tongue out playfully at his "sister" as he follows the cats to the house.Welsh Halfwit wrote:"Except, perhaps, Sandy. But you can blame his craziness on him being a Dog, y'know?"
