Those are game-mechanic standard sizes, you had huge variations... including ships called "galleons" with three gun decks and hundreds of guns.

But by game mechanic rules, she's a "fast galleon".

Sounds like your describing a "Line of Battle ship" which wasn't present in the Caribbean during the golden age of Pirating..
The game only covers the general ship types that operated in the Caribbean and West Indies from 1560 to 1700.
yes, there is a great variation among those general ship types as well.
Info was meant only as general reference of ships you could encounter..

Post by xhunterko »

Heh, all righty, I'll see where this goes then. Character sheet coming in a bit.

EDIT: Hopefully, no problems here:

Name: Gulley Carmen

Species: Rat

Gender: Male

Age: 5 (or, about the equivelant of the species adolescent age)

-Neighborhood-
17th Century Fox

Color: This.

Background: The son of a church mouse, Gulley was always getting into and out of trouble. As a result, he was made to peel potatoes often, but that didn't seem any good for he loved the smell of good food. Of which, the church grounds often seemed lacking. His love of food and longing for adventure made him want to leave his home town and join the circus. The circus was set to sail Spain, but was caught in a storm and left Gulley clinging to a rope logged piece of drift wood heading towards a pirate ship...

Personality: Gulley is friendly, trustworthy, dependable, likable, up until the point he makes off with your cheese sandwhich! He's not all guile and thievery though. And will mostly give it back if he hasn't eaten it yet when, if you catch him. Though if you don't catch him, expect something nice back a couple days later. Growing up in a church he's heard one or two many sermons and his guilty consciuos won't let him rest! Getting to know him will get you a true soul as a friend. If you can put up with is unfairly good nose and insatiable thirst for knowledge that is.

Cool, thanks, Argent. Now I have a better idea of the layout of the ship I should be able to think of more mischeif for Tack to get into.

On another note, Impudence in Spanish is Descaro according to google, which I also think sounds cool if they need to change the ship's name temporarily to protect her identity.

I guess I should clarify about the rats. They're ships rats, they grew up on the ship. The Impudence is 20 years old, so odds are there's no rats left that remember a time before the ship. It's their whole world.

there's two groups of rats. The bilge rats have built a whole town under the hold, and have the best possible ratty lifestyle, with ample (stolen) food and drink, the queen's court, and even a legitimate theater! The topside rats have a harder time, they're more exposed to the predations of the cats and occasional evictions by the crew when their nests are found, but they see themselves more as part of the crew, and think of the bilge rats as parochial dullards.

In other words, the rats are most likely to be either black rats (Rattus rattus) or Brown rats (Rattus norvegicus), correct? They'd be the usual candidates for shipboard rats in the real world.

I've been thinking of them as brown rats, but I suppose you could have an ethnic division between the topside and the bilges as well.

I was thinking a bit of a mix actually. Tack is a brown rat from the bilges, and Bowsprit is a brown rat from the topside. Brown rats are/were far more common and widespread than black rats although both are now found worldwide.

Edit:
Sorry, Argent. Tack's just not a very nice guy. I'll try to downplay his agression as much as I can though. Most creatures can probably beat him in a fight if they catch him off guard before he has a chance to react, given that he's not the biggest or strongest of rats.

And... that's a natural conclusion for her to jump to, I think. Maybe he can bring himself to join the uncultured ruffians of the decks and cabins?

I think it makes more sense for them all to be brown rats.

A demi-cannon or culverin was typically manned by three dedicated gunners plus half a dozen soldiers to help them.

Name: Gulley Carmen

Species: Brown Rat

Gender: Male

Age: 5 (or, about the equivelant of the species adolescent age)

Background: Always getting into trouble, Gulley has been restless of the topside life since he began to walk. Ever curious about how things worked since his aunt told him bed time stories, his curiosity led him to reading. Which led him to getting into the captain's library every now and then. One of the few things he liked to read, and that he found useful, was a cook book or two. Gulley has grown tired of ducking in and out of the captain's cabin and heading back home. Anxious to see the ship work in action, Gulley decides to pack some food and a needle as a makeshift rapier to do a bit of exploring to see what the rest of the ship holds...

He mostly does it for fun anyways! I asked before if i could join and then Argent kinda told me it would be great if i was a rat. But after thinking it over for awhile, I decided to ask if i could either make a character that is on land or a character that is on another opposing ship that the current ship will attack. Either one works for me. Since this looks to be a fast moving RP, it would be best for my char to not join till a week or so from now when i am not as busy.

By the end of the black powder era they got it down to firing a broadside 2 or 3 times in five minutes. I couldn't find good info on firing rates in 1625... but this isn't even a proper ship's gun, so the full team can get a second shot off five minutes after the first they'll be doing very well. James himself, even with a fox helping? Ten minutes.

Musclecar - if you want to wait a week, who knows, we may be looking at meeting another ship by then. I won't hold you to that, so if you want to join this crew you can.

They hadn't really invented orchestral conductors by 1625. The concertmaster was typically a primary instrumental player.

For cannons then especially culverins most crews of three got shots off in 1-10 minutes. For the culverins placement and size it takes about 30the seconds for quick loads which is really good if one cannon only. Most other teams would take one minute per shot. The longest time to take is around fifteen on one of napoleans 60 pound guns that sat on the top deck of one of his biggest ships. For a 32more pound culverin as your describing it depends on how well organized and quickley the team can act so about 30sec.- 2minutes. Time.
Good?
