Increasing signature character limit?
One thing that has always bugged me is the tiny signature character limit. (The current limit is only 255.)
So I have a suggestion, Increasing the character limit.(perhaps 1k characters?) And if the moderators think it would become necessary, Adding some signature size limitations/rules.(like at most forums I've been to, they have a signature character limit of 5k and height limit of 150 pixels)
What do you think?

I think it should stay a small amount, since most people may not want to see a wall of text/pictures following everyone's posts.

Re: Increasing signature character limit?
I was a little disappointed that the maximum height wasn't 90 pixels (I had an awesome banner.), but the reasons for the small signature space are good and cogent. Some people already have longer signatures than most of the posts they make. = P

Re: Increasing signature character limit?
400x150 is hardly a wall of text. But yeah, i see the intentions behind the limit. It's just i wish they were a little bigger.FlintTheSquirrel wrote:I think it should stay a small amount, since most people may not want to see a wall of text/pictures following everyone's posts.

Re: Increasing signature character limit?
I had to shorten my signature just to make it stay under the 255 character limit.(and the url's to the (dynamic)images >_> that's whats taking up the most space)

I would argue that this alone is an argument for NOT increasing increasing the limit...ReCreate wrote:I had to shorten my signature just to make it stay under the 255 character limit.(and the url's to the (dynamic)images >_> that's whats taking up the most space)
But that's just my own opinion. Just my own.

I can hardly fit anything in there because the links are too long.

Re: Increasing signature character limit?
I don't know part of me understands why a small limit is a good thing but then there's also part of me that kind of wants the limit raised some because I think that a 255 character limit is kind of low. I could see it raised to like maybe 500 I think that's a little bit better and not to much as to let the signatures get to big.

Well, that's why I suggested the height limit.

Re: Increasing signature character limit?
I'm gonna have to say that a slight increase in sig character limit would be a wonderful idea.

I oppose
users are already using two or tree signatures, and i think it's already to large.

Re: Increasing signature character limit?
I can see what you are getting at when links are counted as part of the character limit, but obviously not displayed in text.
A slight increase would be nice.
Even at the current limit, it can be abused to stretch the page with many double spaces and such.
I think the forums are mature enough to handle the extra space (I don't think anyone uses up the 255 characters anyways).
The size limit for signature images can stay the same though.

This is exactly why I suggested the height limit. So that it can't be abused.users are already using two or tree signatures, and i think it's already to large.

Re: Increasing signature character limit?
Dude, you're crazy if you think that. You know how many characters it takes to make a link for a PF character? Heck, one man on here can't link to all 4 of his characters because of the character limit.Esquire Fox wrote:(I don't think anyone uses up the 255 characters anyways).

Ain't there a way to shorten a links URL name to make it take up less characters?

Tinyurl has gained a bit of controversy because its a widely used tool by scammers and phishers apparently. That and any other url shortening websites.IceKitsune wrote:You can use tinyURL I think
Re: Increasing signature character limit?
The limit is there for a reason you know, adding more than 255 to your signature is overkill here.

Since these sites will apparently be used for linking to threads on the forum and some pics I don't think there's much risk.Typhon wrote:Tinyurl has gained a bit of controversy because its a widely used tool by scammers and phishers apparently. Probably not here, but a while back on youtube many people go their accounts stolen by clicking fake tinyurl links. just a bit of warning.Liam wrote:Since these sites will apparently be used for linking to threads on the forum and some pics I don't think there's much risk.Typhon wrote:Tinyurl has gained a bit of controversy because its a widely used tool by scammers and phishers apparently. Overkill? Don't Make Me Laugh! And the reason is because it is the default setting. Also@ people above, tinyurl strictly only works for links. Because of how it works, images wont work.(in the img tag that is.Dylan wrote:The limit is there for a reason you know, adding more than 255 to your signature is overkill here.

the character limit is kinda small..

lets see, you have 5 things in your signature. 1 you can get rid of easily.ReCreate wrote:Overkill? Don't Make Me Laugh! And the reason is because it is the default setting. Meanwhile, I make do with an amusing quotation from the cast page. Less can be more, guys. Less can be more.

Okay, it seems that most people do want some kind of increase. Perhaps, maybe it's about time things were increased a little. But with that...
comes...

Okay, I promise I'll get a conversation going between Rick, the other mods, and I, and we'll figure something out...whether it might be some kind of increase, or an executive decision to keep things the same. We'll see. But for now, I don't think this thread has much more use, so it's done.
