The Fire and Grass Starters look really cool! But I don't really like the frog. I already know that I am going with Grass, and most likely my friend will use the fox.

I decided to pick the Y version (I didn't like the X deer legendary) and pick the grass starter. But I might change the starter after seeing the final evolution.

It's unfortunate for me that this new Pokemon game looks so promising, seeing as I don't have a 3DS and I'm not gonna be buying one any time soon.

*high fives KJOokami* I'm in the same boat! The 3DS is a lot cheaper than I thought it would be, though. $160 isn't really that bad when you consider the price of even a used console today.

Agreed. As much as I love the other games out there, I didn't love them enough to consider upgrading to the 3DS.

There's something about the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series that is just so charming. I'm glad they are continuing it.

I don't usually choose based on legendaries since I tend not to like the designs of the titanic ones, and I don't let myself use anything with over 580 base stats anyway.

On the sorta same note as Brent with these games, I may jump off of the bandwagon with these.

It looks good, but Pokemon Black/White was so-so for me, I haven't even bothered to get past the 4th gym in Black2/White2 (And that's saying something because I would love to get to my personal favorite area in all of the games, Hoenn).

I was personally hoping for a Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald remake because they were my favorite games in every aspect. The story, the music, the pokemon, the starters, everything. I disliked Black2/White2 enough that I'm not going to even consider buying the game until it's been out, I hear about it from my friends, read about it online, and am sure it's decent in more than just the graphics.

As for picking the games based on legendaries, I bought pokemon black and then bought white 2 without seeing the cover of the the white 2 (thinking that Zekrom would be in this game). I ended up with 2 Reshrams (I had to trade my latias for a japanese zekrom. Thankfully I had two latias thanks to my pokemon Soul Silver full pokedex).
In case someone wondered, nobody wanted my second Reshram.

They were male or female by human standards. I'm sure members of that species don't see the males as feminine or the females as masculine.

Oh I'm sure, you could even say that it wouldn't be weird to the people in the game, but being outside the game I know the pokemon were designed by people, impressed with the same stereotypes of male and female as I, so at first glance it strikes me as weird.

But then you could also say, because there are only 2 sprite sets for each pokemon (standard and shiny), we never get to see any of the subtle differences that there would be between male and female pokemon. *shrugs*

No, some pokemon do have different sprites for the male and female. Not all do, but some.

And some are really hard to notice unless you've already been told about it.

Nah. I mean like, 2-plus-years-from-now "any time soon". I'm already splurging on getting myself to a convention this March (only because I was offered a spot on a VA panel; which is a pretty big deal for me), so with me wanting to get my school loans paid off ASAP, and only getting just above minimum wage working night shifts at a diner nearby, I just can't bring myself to actually buy a 3DS just for this game. If I start making significantly more money than I am now, and my loans start getting paid off quicker than expected, then I might be able to snag it a few months after release. But I honestly don't see that being the case.

Yeah, they certainly exist. I actually got a female Cyndaquil when I started SoulSilver a couple weeks ago. :P

I received a female Cyndaquil in SoulSilver as well. I was very surprised when I first noticed the female symbol on my starter. After I found out the ratio, I felt pretty lucky.
Through the game, it added a little extra character to my starter, which was nice since the whole theme of the game was interacting with your Pokemon and characterizing them.

While we are on the topic of Pokemon, what sort of teams have you guys been using?
Do you stick with just your starter through the whole game till it one hits everything in your path?
Do you raise a strategic and powerful set of 6 that would hold their own in any battle?
Perhaps you just grab some of your favorites and disregard stats and power all together.

In SoulSilver, I had a team of just two: A Typhloshion named Pharoah and an Ampharos named Tesla.

Ah, the electric and fire-type pairing. I use it myself. :P It's a powerful combination when used correctly, although the minute a rock type move gets thrown, we cry and arrange our final Wills.

I raise a strategic team of six that could knock the socks off of any opponent. I focus heavily on my fire type, water type, and electric type. I keep a rather powerful grass type and dark type, and the final is normally an HM mule or a random Pokemon to the mix or my Rayquaza.

My Pokemon's move sets are strategic as well, and well-equipped for any situation. For example, here are my current four main Pokemon in White 2:
Samurott (because I hate Tempig that much):
Slash
Surf
Revenge
Fury Cutter
(As soon as I discover a good grass type move, Slash will be gone.)

Arcanine:
Dig
Flame Burst
Reversal
Flamethrower

Ampharos:
Tackle
Signal Beam
Discharge
Power Gem

Zoroark:
Fury Swipes
Faint Attack
Night Slash
Foul Play
(He needs a better variety of moves, I know. I only recently started using him.)

I also have a Virizion and Braviary to cover up any weaknesses I may encounter. But this is just for White 2, which I have barely worked on. If I had ALL my Pokemon in a single game, you can bet Rayquaza would be used instead of Braviary, and I would have to closely consider who I'd swap Virizion out for.

You know what would be nice?
If they made this for all the versions. This whole "nine games for the DS family" is getting messy.

Post Re: Discussion: Video Games
I tend to play for a mix of optimum stats and favorites on my first playthrough of the games, generally looking up all the Pokemon available beforehand. I start off by forming a team of various types that blend well together, pick a few Pokemon of each of those types (taking secondary types into account as I go) that have the best mix of stats and moves, and then choose my favorites of those.

Once I've beaten the main story, though, just about anything is fair game. I've done the "Pick a starter; never use anything else" strategy a few times before. In fact, my personal record for beating Sapphire is actually from one of those runs. I believe I was using Torchic, and I ended up beating the Elite Four at just over 8 hours of play time. Hardly a world record, but still pretty darn quick for me.

Slightly related: I actually think one of my favorite aspects of the Mystery Dungeon series was the fact that pretty much every Pokemon you can get is viable to be on your team. So you have a ton more freedom in your choices than you would in the normal Pokemon games. Plus, I just love the concept. :3

Edit: Also,

Beagle wrote:

I believe you mean a ground type move. :P Rock is only super effective against fire, flying, and ice (and bug?).

I used to optimize and make a semi-competitive team, but now I just have a better time playing like I did as a kit: just catching what I'm interested in and using what I like. If I want a specific species, I might look up where to find it, but other than that I just try to play organically.

I'm still struggling to make a competitive team. EV training correctly takes time and I initially thought that only the pokemon who deffeated the pokemon was to one to get EV, but I then discoreved that exp also transfer EV, which means that I "ruined" a few special attack pokes with attack EVs. Luckly there are berries that fix this mistake, but I can only get 5 of them each them and if I'm luck to get them at all.
I want to do a ninjask (holding focus sash) with swords dance+speed boost+batom pass to transfer the boost to a ursaring who holds a flame orb/toxic orb (I'm thinking of toxic orb since burn stat reduces attack) to use facade.

I usually try to make a strategic team, especially if I know the types I'll be facing, however it always includes my starter (I literally never go anywhere without my starter in my party). I usually base my strategy on the attacks, I always had a sleep move in the party, known by a strong pokemon then I had a lot of high powered stab attacks. I didn't pay much attention to stats but I usually had at least one attack that affected them, mostly by chance.

I actually did that. You have to breed it onto a Vulpix by breeding a lady-Vulpix/lady-Ninetales with a boy with Energy Ball.

I'm not above breeding for moves but I don't EV train anymore.

I EV train because otherwise my pokes would be killed without even a chance to deffend themselves.
I don't breed for IVs thou. This one is waaay too complicated and time consuming for me.
edit: for black/white players just use tm 53 and teach vulpix energy ball. you don't have to breed t get it.
edit2: nevermind

The games themselves are easy. There's no need to EV train unless you intend to play other people or try to succeed in the "Battle [whatever]". Hence why I don't EV train, 'cause I don't focus on that.

As a kid, I would always just use my starter until it would beat everything. For the first and second generations, I trucked along with the fire starters. Come generation 3, I started using a lot of the legendaries. I ran the elite four so many times that I maxed out my Rayquaza, Kyogre, and Swampert. With generation 4, my team focused on Darkrai and Empoleon. With generation 5's Pokemon Black, I played through the game with Dewott and Victini. I never liked the final evolution for Oshawott, so I handicapped myself with an everstone and I found the game much more challenging (and fun!). Finally, with Pokemon Black 2, I caught on to EV and IV values. I breed a great IV Zorua with a timid nature and Dark Pulse in my Black version and traded it into Black 2 to be EV trained as I played. I paired her along with Dewott, Victini, Lucario, and Ampharos. The Zoroark ended up being incredibly powerful, capable of sweeping everything with Nasty Plot and an array of elemental moves. It was a lot of fun managing a whole team, but I don't think I'll focus so much on EV training in the future. IV breeding was incredibly difficult and I don't think I'll ever try it again, haha.

For those who it may concern, Nintendo Force has released their first issue. The price seems a bit steep, but this is their first publication and all profit is going into charity for this first issue. With the Coupon Code 'HPSD', you can even get a couple of dollars off. Having ordered a print copy (and received free digital copy immediately), I can honestly say that it stands up very well to Nintendo Power. It is a full 80 pages, crammed with much of what you would expect to find in the recently deceased magazine. There are tons of professionally written articles on upcoming and current games and features. In the first few pages, there is a section for letters, fan art, and even a "Don't Hassle the Hoff" homage. There is a review section for recent 3DS and Wii Virtual Console releases and several fantastic comics that are featured as "comic breaks" spread throughout the magazine.

I highly recommend checking it out if you were a fan of Nintendo Power. Even if you just go for a digital copy, you won't be disappointed. Just know that all profit for this is currently going to charity and cheaper subscription prices are expected soon.
