The army

Post by Jack »

I'm sleeping every night now with an M-16 under my mattress and 58 bullets in two binded cartridges under my pillow. On top of that I got a vest with another two cartridges (29 bullets each) and a helmet on standby. This can only mean I'm at Israeli army bootcamp. Thought I'd disscuss it here. Please don't talk politics, it's against the rules.

Does everyone have to serve at least one year in the armed forces in Israel?
or am I thinking of somewhere else?
I think in Non-sequiturs

Men serve three years, women serve two. It's possible to get an exemption.

Good luck Jack, I hope you do fine during your time in the army. Do you get to choose what branch you go into?

If I ever want to join an army of any country (and I kind of DON'T) it would be Israel.

Personally, I have always thought soldiers were unnerving, the idea that they are trained to kill without question is a terrifying thought. And... those that go to become soldiers... change, I don't know what the army does to them but they seem to become different people once they have been "made" into soldiers.
Of course I know that we need armies to protect us but... it still concerns me.

@ Jack - Do take care of yourself, and good luck.

I thought the defining points for manhood were a taste for free form jazz, saying "tax deductions", and having sideburns.

I was refering not to learning how to shoot a gun, but to the training, the teamwork, the building of character and refining of personalty, Tat.

Actually, we are trained to kill with a whole lot of thought. We never EVER shoot unless it has to be done.
So I'm actually training to be a commander. It's twice as long as normal training and a bit harder then usual. I will train other soldiers to a certain level. I'm not the highest level of training commander but I am mighty respectablle. It's tough but it's worth it.

And yes, israel and its army are very cool.

Well that's good, but hopefully you won't need it too much. Take care and try not to get a double concussion like my friend in the Marines. Poor fella was two weeks from finishing boot camp. He's fine now, but couldn't rejoin.

Re: The army

so i haven't posted this week because i'v had "field week". its not as fun as it sounds. not for most people, anyway. i had a blast!

we get there, set up our little tents (which we need to bury in sand every morning so enemies won't find it) and then learn how to invade and conquer positions, how to walk silently how to move strategically through different terrains and areas, how "not to be seen", and other fun things like that. its really fun. but of course, there is also the thing with the running, and the carrying and the setting up camp, and being woken at least twice each night because we are being "attacked" (its just practice, we aren't really being attacked). also, there is the matter of being in the desert. its hot as all hells at day and cold as a... something thats really cold, at night. :p

so ya, fun!

of course! of course! it actually really is pretty easy to forget the actual purpose sometimes. it is advised to remind ourselves and others of it.

Just remember, the grenade goes away from friends. I forgot that once....But bad humor aside, good luck on your tests! Hopefully you can handle an LMG better than my friend.

He was pretty much told never to wield an automatic anything ever since his control was so terrible.

Given that the United States Air Force Reserve Officers' Training Corps is not administered by the Israeli military, I doubt Jack would be able to provide much assistance. One assumes you would have done research online?

Not all colleges and universities offer an ROTC program, and those that do may not have one for the Air Force. I encourage you to visit the Air Force ROTC Web site, if you have not already, for more information.
