This is really why I write fanfics. It helps me practice writing, and I enjoy it.

Also, Two_Twig, I was referring to our little "discussion" in the poll thread.

Woah, hold up.
By drawing Fanart I break copyright laws?
I'd better start parodying instead then :?.

Buckdida wrote:Nah, most fanfiction is copyright infringement, because most fanfiction is not written as parody, just badly written, and then they use fair use after the fact to cover their behinds.

The point of fair use is for people to express opinion without fear of being censored by the author. For example:

1. Reviews (this is the big one for fair use)
2. Classroom use (for teaching)
3. Parody
4. Research

In addition, such stuff under fair use really shouldn't benefit the person who created it under fair use. The intent of the person matters too. They can say it's parody, but unless it is evident that it clearly is, it's really not.

When a person writes a fanfiction, they mainly do it for (as so the comic says) their own indulgences. People often write fanfiction based on what they want to happen, and forget the canon. That's not really making fun of something to provide your own commentary or humor. Parody, honestly, is more supposed to protect political cartoonists (and the occasional good flash movie).

So. Most fanfiction, or fanart for that matter, would be considered copyright infringement, and are not protected by fair use. However, in reality, not only would it take a team of people to keep all of it down, it would be bad publicity for the author, and many authors can actually find such things flattering...depending on the person's intent, of course.

So fanfiction gets on by, unless the author finds it and really hates it for reasons of his/her own. Good thing, too, because there actually are good fanfics that really stand out. Like Sinder and Dean's stuff. And Twiggy's stuff. And for others, it can be good practice and a venue for feedback and criticism for improving.

Depends on what you're drawing, really. If you're drawing or writing something that would anger the creator of the original content, you can bet it's going down.

However, there can also be plenty of fanart that is awesome and that the author likes and finds flattering or cool, cute, or funny. It really depends on the author in question.

Anyway, what about Marvin's reaction in the first panel? Is that commentary on the state of newspapers? A lot of them are going out of business these days, or switching to online reporting, as far as I know.

Heh, I just took it that they're pets, and you know how pets regard newspapers.... :P Of course, that's just my hypothesis....

Speaking of newspapers, is the headline a reference or is it just something silly? If it is a reference, could anyone please explain it?

But at the same time, it ruins it for the people who do understand it, not that I do or anything.
But when it comes to his expression towards the newspaper, I just take it that Tiger don't read much if at all, and it sure is a weird thing to start back by reading a newspaper.

[Don't Explain the Joke].

Interestingly, I had an interview today that stressed newspaper writing skills. "I know you can edit video and do all this other broadcasting stuff. I know you can write broadcast style. Those matter less than being able to write in print style."

Okay okay, guys, It's a reference to Foxtrot; whenever Amend has a newspaper in his comic the headline will be "Cartoonist [does something prestigious, not necessarily related to cartooning]"
I'm sure the cold hand of science will be able to overcome his magical powers

Wait...is this a one-off...? It doesn't say.... (EDIT: Never mind....)

And I'm guessing that guy falling and screaming in the background is Killbody from three seconds in the future.... Take that, "Doc" Emmet L. Brown! :P

The last panel reminds me of way back when in the Pokémon cartoon where there was Sabrina's dad and he always teleported everyone else several feet above the ground. Also, does it count as murder/suicide if your past self is still intact to become your current self? Especially if the butterfly effect leads you to not kill yourself in the past again?

Poor fellow was interrupted by a fish slap that sent him to the moon. Oh well~

PHYSICS! Kids, make sure you understand your basic time-space theory and quantum mechanics before building your own backyard time machine! Remember kids, preparation is half the safety, and a welding mask and thick gloves are the other! Also a bomb shelter in case your nuclear core messes up. And when first testing your machine, be sure to send in a willing test monkey Who's signed all the necessary release forms before trying it for fun yourself!

You don't want to be like Doctor Killbody, do you?

*drops trout*

If you don't spin fast enough, you can't control it.

clearly spot knows his stuff. you don't mess with the earth, the king of spin! since it spinned so fast it was three seconds ahead of where he fell!

Spot spins so fast that his mass increases exponentially, thus bringing local spacetime to rotate itself and creating a Gödel metric which enables him to travel back in time via a closed timelike curve.
