I tend to sacrifice beautiful drawings for compactness and efficient story-telling (since I'm a cartoonist and all), so this is what you get.

Not that I can draw beautifully anyways.

You've got good variation in designs going on. (What happened to the one guy's foot on the bottom row, though?)
I'm intrigued by the fellow in orange with the impressive gut on the bottom row there. Are all his people of such generous girth?

Hey let's start a space chain

Thanks! Variation in design is really what I was aiming for, since they're aliens XP.
Now about the Ambraali foot... I sorta ran out of space an the A4... and so decided to edit a fade out of the foot... should work on that.
Yes, the Glish are all like that (ok, most don't really have a fat belly, but this is a well fed slave-driver).
I've made the Glish here busy with a whip because they're the only 100% true evil race in our galaxy, and collect many slaves
of stone age planets.

You're pretty good. Would you mind terribly if I had a few comments, though?

Firstly, what program do you colour in? I have a suggestion, if it is one like photoshop where you can set blending modes to different layers - Set your sketch to 'multiply', it gets rid of the white fuzzy edges.

Secondly, you should really avoid soft brushes/blur tool/smudge tool/blur filter for shading - hard brushes almost always give a better look, whether you are going for cell shading or gradients.

Regardless, it's still better than most of the stuff I do - Nice work.

Thanks! I'm using Gimp... and I'm not all too familiar with it, so I wouldn't know what setting to multiply is/would do/where to find.
Also, I color all this with a mouseImage, no special Wacom tablet.
How would you make a gradient with a hard brush?

It's easy, just takes a little longer - Choose the colour you want you shadow to be, then fill that it like you did, then make the brush a tad smaller, choose a colour that is about half way between your flat colour and your shadow, and then go over the hard edge of the shadow. If there are still hard edges, pick a new colour, again half way between the colours that are there, and repeat. Continue doing that until it blends something like this:

Image

Now, I was lazy, so the gradient is kind of banded, but you get the idea - Takes a while, but it's totally worth it.

As for the multiply thing:
RandomPersonOnYahooAnswers wrote:In the layers dialog (control L) highlight the layer you want to modify. There's a dropdown list called "mode" in the layer menu. All the options you mention (and many more) are available in this menu.
Set it to multiply there, and then just do the colours under the line layer. Multiply basically sets the opacity of the layer based on how close the colour is to white or black. The black lines would stay solid whereas the white noise around the edges would become mostly transparent.

You can also just change the opacity of the brush instead of finding a new color each time, but I don't know if that would produce the same result.
I myself usually keep a flat color layer, and put any shading in a single color on another layer, on which I just play with the opacity and blending effects till it looks right. Of course, my shading is pretty much always flat so ya now.
Why do you want to make a gradient with a hard brush?

Captain: I can really see what inspires you!
Just in case your wondering how I shade:
I take (in gimp) the paint brush, black, with 47% opacity, then I blend with the blur tool.
Its practically almost the same as how I normally draw on paper:
I take a B2/4 pencil, with soft tip, then I blend with a color shaper (hope you know what that is).

Well, when you are shading something with a matte texture, like the sphere I drew, it doesn't really matter so much. There are a lot of things where using a hard brush makes much cleaner, smoother textures, though, so it's typically good to get into the habit. Now, if one is doing their shading with blending effects like you said, that's where soft brushes can really shine - But in a complex picture, you end up with a massive amount of layers when you shade like that.

I like the way you colored this, although, to be a nag, it's better suited for the Fan Art thread since it is in fact Housepets related.

I hardly ever use soft brushes, but that's because I usually do very simple flat shading.
I'm also just a neurotic freak and I'm paranoid that if I don't keep everything on separate layers I'll mess up and wish I had. It runs Photoshop up a wall sometimes, but hey.

Edit: Now time for more dinosaurs. (Although pterodactyls aren't dinosaurs)
