Re: Chat Thread XXX: It's Not What You Think
I think punctuational attempts to convey the tone of sentences, as a general rule, destroy the intention of the sentence. Question marks are necessary for clarity, and exclamation points, when used sparingly, can be useful, but experimental marks like irony marks and interrobangs remove the finesse of the irony and interrogatory-exclamatiousness (respectively) that they are meant to indicate.

I agree about irony marks, but interrobangs serve a useful purpose and aren't always trying to express finesse. It's not really necessary, though, considering we can always use the two punctuation marks together rather than invent a new one. You did what with my golf clubs?!

Interrobang is just an absurdly silly word. We must use it more often.

I think it looks better with the exclamation point first (!?), but that's just one of those rules I invented for myself because I like minor arbitrary rules and didn't think English had enough.Sleet wrote:I agree about irony marks, but interrobangs serve a useful purpose and aren't always trying to express finesse. I dunno, I feel like noting it would make it sound less clever, although people use emoticons this way sometimes anyway, so it might not be that different.Sleet wrote:Sarcasm marks would be nice to have though.

okay, who Brick'd Leaf for being studious? ten points from Gryffindor. (or whatever house the bricker is from.)
sarcasm marks wouldn't take away from anything. Sarcasm is usually spoken in a tone of voice that makes it obvious it's sarcasm. new punctuation marks should only be used when tone of voice usually tells you what kind of statement is being made. irony is rarely actually spoken, so irony marks are useless.

Meh, I just think that a sarcastic tone of voice is more subtle than the glaring backwards question mark or whatever one could theoretically use to indicate sarcasm. Maybe that's just me.RandomGeekNamedBrent wrote:sarcasm marks wouldn't take away from anything. Guys we should use backwards exclamation points to indicate exclamatory irony and oh wait

I like big words too, dude. (studious isn't that big a word, but it's not used nearly often enough.)CaptainPea wrote:RandomGeekNamedBrent wrote:okay, who Brick'd Leaf for being studious?

how about a question mark without a dot? it's subtle.CaptainPea wrote:Meh, I just think that a sarcastic tone of voice is more subtle than the glaring backwards question mark or whatever one could theoretically use to indicate sarcasm. Maybe that's just me.
Re: Chat Thread XXX: It's Not What You Think
A guy once told me, that you'll only be great at sarcasm once you're the only one who knows that you're using it, so I never use a tone unless I WANT them to know. Meaning i'm being friendly and silly. Which is basically me on the internet at any time. So I will use the irony mark from now on.

It'd look weird if the sentence wouldn't normally end in a question mark, though.RandomGeekNamedBrent wrote:how about a question mark without a dot? it's subtle.CaptainPea wrote:Meh, I just think that a sarcastic tone of voice is more subtle than the glaring backwards question mark or whatever one could theoretically use to indicate sarcasm. It wasn't going anywhere; try mirroring an exclamation point.Leafolawl wrote:Where was this sentence going? 'cause it's confusing me.CaptainPea wrote:Guys we should use backwards exclamation points to indicate exclamatory irony and oh wait
I don't normally speak that emphatically (my voice is incredibly exciting), but my friends have learned that when my voice drops to a total monotone that I'm probably not being sincere.Psykeout wrote:A guy once told me, that you'll only be great at sarcasm once you're the only one who knows that you're using it, so I never use a tone unless I WANT them to know. What if we gave the exclamation point two dots?
Or what if we just repurpose a seldom used already existing character? Like an up tack (⊥) or French quotation marks (« »)?

About halfway through the discussion I forgot about what we were going to use the symbol for and just started cavorting through Wikipedia looking for symbols I liked.RandomGeekNamedBrent wrote:but I thought we were going for subtlety.
I do think up tacks can find their place, though.
"It's like a Euro symbol, except it's rotated a little less than 225 degrees counter-clockwise and then uncurled, but only, like, halfway, like if you were trying to uncurl paper and it went back sorta flat, but not all the way."Tattorack wrote:Wow, what an easy symbol to remeberLet's use Sampi, ϡ.

Re: Chat Thread XXX: It's Not What You Think
Emoticons look awesome on school essays, you should try it.
on the internet, the irony mark is ":P," which doesn't express any emotion at all. Smile means happy, frown means sad, eyebrows can also add things. Visible tongue means "don't be mad at this sentence it's meant in some sort of playful way"
I like randomly seeing what symbols my keyboard knows how to make.
Θ, *, s, ë, √, ☺.
phun phact:
"☺" is nowhere on the internet according to google.

Re: Chat Thread XXX: It's Not What You Think
actually, typing !? is MORE lazy, as an interrobang requires either remembering a code and 5-6 keystrokes, INCLUDING a hold-down, or looking it up and copy-paste, which is a whole nutha level of over-complication. !? is TECHNICALLY grammatically incorrect, though you see it used everywhere books are sold and their neighbors. Only someone dedicated to adhering to strict conventions would take the trouble.

I'm no good at punctuation, it's one of those things that makes me question why I am a writer, I can't spell, usually I have very bad punctuation, and I always have run on sentences. Still, I think maybe bolding certain words would work.
