Home Pets! (Four or less translation)

Post by mathgrant »

No words longer than four letters are allowed. It's that simple. (Hyphens count as a word break, so "one-eyed Jack" is a three-letter word and two four-letter words, not a seven-letter word and a four-letter word.)

Feel free to join in with your own translations at any time -- but if you use any words longer than four letters, you will be berated.

Some of the characters have names that are longer than four letters. As a result, if these characters are referred to by name, they'll need to be referred to by a nickname. For example:

Peanut -> P.B.
Grape -> G.J.
Marvin -> Marv
Maxwell -> Max
Zachary -> Zach

What other characters are there? I know there's Tarot -- should we call her Taro? And Daisy -- her only line in the whole comic is to say her own name. And Tiger. I think some discussion on these matters would be a good idea before any comics with their names actually get translated. :)

Nice idea with that :). As for the names, all I can suggest is calling Tiger "Lion" >_>. That would work, wouldn't it?

His collar tag says "T" on it. I'd prefer to use some kind of appropriately short nickname, even if it's just Tige or Tig or Mr. T (I pity da fool!). "The one with T on his tag"! :)

Pnut and Tigr seem kinda obvious to me. *laughs*

Finally, a translation project I can get behind! x3

I remembered this strip having very little dialogue, and most of the dialogue already being in perfect "four or less" form, so I skipped ahead to it, thinking it'd be easy. Unfortunately, the "WOOSH" onomatopoeia tripped me up. I had to muster all of my Paint.NET might to change it to "WSSH". Also, in the same manner as the Italian translation, I've chosen to add the translated mouse-over text to the bottom of the comic.

Image

Edit: Here's another quick one I did that wasn't as quick as I thought it would be. The dialogue and onomatopoeia were easy enough, but the mouse-over text was a pain. (I like how Joel's more polite, though! :) )

Those look too text-message-y, and not dialogue-y enough. ;)

I think Tiger should be "Cat", since it would follow the derogatory deal, and everyone would understand it. :P

It's tougher than you might expect, yeah. Very rewarding and fun, though.

Here are the next two comics! (Coming up with a way to paraphrase "ninjas" was the most annoying part. The second most annoying part was preserving the joke of the last panel as well as possible.)

Yikes. . . the next two comics have a bunch of big, scary words in them. I think I'll skip them for now, and do the final strip in the story arc.

Edit: I also just edited the translation of the first comic's first panel -- Peanut calling Grape "sis" at this point in the comic contradicts when he's later surprised to learn she's a girl.

Technically, instead of having Mrs. Sandwich say, "Take them", she could say "here you go", and it would still work.

It really looks fun to try and do this, but I am fairly busy lately... maybe next month? That would work.

Also, you did a good job with the last one :), but wouldn't "help me" work, too, in the last panel?

That would be a more accurate translation of "SOMEONE HELP" than "SAVE ME!". :)

I use Paint.NET, myself. That, and you need the font Webletterer BB (I think it's called). :)

"Shows" is too long of a word. *berates* Also, try to abstain from Peanut calling Grape "sis" before he learns she's a girl. ;)

I was bored so yeah. I didn't think it'd be this hard though, lol. Also, does anyone know four letter word for change that isn't a made up word?

Edit: Ha! I reworded it! It makes slightly less sense but it is now under four letters!...I think, wait hold on a sec-- YES UNDER FOUR LETTERS.

'Tis a thing to beat? Eeeeeenk.

I believe the original comic refers to "change" as a noun (as in, the process or state of things changing), so "turn into" won't work. "Turn" seems good as a noun. HAHAHA DISREGARD THAT, I SUCK

Also, I'd consider maybe using "the end of life" instead of "un-life" for death. But I dunno.

"(the) loss of life" could work for death.

using 'thing' definitely needs to change... the wordier strips are so hard!

Well I thought of that too but I thought it was too wordy, especially for the last bubble.
Also, agreed. I probably should have chosen a strip with less sophisticated dialogue.
