Original post below:

Hi, is anyone interested in a Hungarian translation?

It's my native language, so I have no trouble doing it. Actually, I've done the first arc already to see if my Photoshop skills are up to it, and I think the results are okay. Should I post it, does anyone want to see? Does anybody even speak Hungarian around here? I can (and would happily) do more if there's an audience.

Okay, I finished Arc 2!

I tried a different font for these pages, tell me which one looks better! Unfortunately I can't use Webletterer, since Hungarian has lots of accented letters, and only Webletterer Pro has those.

Also I'm going to try and post some links in local forums, see if I can get some of my fellow Hungarians to come have a look.

Interesting; while I know Hungarian is an Eastern European language, and probably Germanic, it looks to have some french influence. You wouldn't happen to know the history of the language, would you?

Well, I must admit I'm not all that well informed in linguistic history, but what I can tell you is that Hungarian is a Finno-Ugric language, not Germanic. Unfortunately I don't speak French so I can't compare in detail, and even though there are some similarities to German (I speak German too), Hungarian has fundamental differences from both. We did borrow a lot of words from other languages though... If you would like to read up on history, I'm afraid I have to refer you to this webpage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Hungarian

I have no idea whether anyone else is reading these besides me and valerio, but at least he's exited about it, or so it seems... :D Anyways that, and the fact that it's a lot of fun for me to do these translations means I'll keep doing them! For now I have the one-offs after Arc 2, but I'm doing Arc 3 already, so stay tuned for more! Oh, and valerio? Thank you for the feedback and encouragement! Also I'm sorry I'm a little slow, but I only just noticed you're Italian. Hurray for being in the same time-zone!!!

And if there happen to be any lurkers out there, let me know you're reading? Send me a sign or something? You can tweet me @brokenfox if you're not registered on the forum.

No EARTHLY idea what it all means, but I have enjoyed figuring out how to pronounce it all :D

Two questions: In "Nem, a teljes macska is baj lenne" the word "felinophile" appears to be written in English. Is this supposed to be so?
Also in "Ez meg honnan jött", second panel, second speech bubble it says, "a dolgot akkor az az ö bajuk".

Thanks for adding a new translation to our forums. I always enjoy reading through them all. :D

Thanks, I would love to listen to your attempt at pronouncing Hungarian text! Or better yet, maybe I should record a few of these comics... That way all of you could read and-or listen and still have no idea what it all meant! :D

Also you're right, I will correct 'felinophile' to the correct Hungarian spelling in the next update, I just forgot about it when writing the translation. The other sentence is, however, grammatically correct. [Hungarian grammar lesson] The double usage of the articles 'az' and 'ez' is common in Hungarian. In this sentence, the first 'az' acts as the demonstrative determiner (that), and the second is the definitive article (the). Hungarian grammar requires that I include the article, in English that would be like saying 'that's the they're problem'. Of course, English grammar omits the article 'the'. [/Hungarian grammar lesson]

Ooooh, thanks for the grammar lesson :D
My reading is very halting and slow. And I keep forgetting to pronounce S and A correctly :lol: (I keep saying Sz and Á)
Though I did finally manage to get Gy down pretty well.

But I still love reading through these because it forces me to think outside my normal sphere of language and make sounds I'm not used to making. Great stuff! :D

As always, thank you for your support guys! I'm happy you get some entertainment from my translations!

Also I need to find some handwriting-like font for the Spot (superdog) comics. Any suggestions? Font must include all accented letters for obvious reasons (á, é, í, ó, ö, ő, ú, ü, ű). Except maybe ű and ő, the font I'm using for the normal comics right now doesn't have those so I write ö and ü instead, but I figured it won't show much.

Here's Arc 4:

Anyway, great job!

Oh, it was a lot of fun translating Bino's lines! Especially the ones when he flies off the handle completely before Grape whacks him on the head with the pan. Sometimes I need to make little adjustments to the structure and order of the original text since English and Hungarian are very different, and it just wouldn't sound good if I just translated without thought. Some of the puns I had to rethink too, for obvious reasons. Still, I try to stay as close as possible to the original script since I'm not rewriting, I'm just translating.
valerio wrote:Also, Dog = Kutya, it sounds so DDAAAWW! :D :D
:lol: I'm happy you find it DAAAWWW worthy, even if it is such a common, everyday word for me. So how about these:

dog = kutya
doggy = kutyus
mutt = eb
pooch = blöki
puppy = kiskutya, kutyakölyök

[TV announcer voice] Don't forget to tune in next week, when we discuss the Hungarian etymology of the word cat! [/TV announcer voice] :lol:

First of all, thank you!

Teh Brawler made a similar remark earlier, about the similarities to German. There might be a little influence but it's mostly superficial, with a few words borrowed here and there.

Huh, I don't really see the similarities to German that they speak of :?
In all honesty, the spelling reminds me more of Polish
Though the pronunciation reminds me of nothing I've ever heard :lol:

However, I do agree that these are fantastic! :D
Though I can't wrap my mind around the poppies/puppies part :(

Yes, Hungarian can do that to you! :D As for the 'poppies' pun, unfortunately that's a wordplay I couldn't properly replicate in Hungarian. Oh, the nuances of the original script! *sigh* :) Instead I went with Sasha making a common Hungarian grammar mistake on her sign. I had her mistake the letter 'ly' (yes, that is considered a single letter of the alphabet in Hungarian) for a 'j' in kölyök. Those two are basically used as the same letter, same pronunciation, the only difference being learning which words are written with which letter. Learning that is a good part of elementary grade grammar lessons here! And when Fox shouts to her to correct it, she thinks the word should be written with a 'ly' next to, not instead of the 'j'. It's the best alternative I could come up with. I'm sure the other translators face similar challenges...

What? :shock: It does rhyme! Second and fourth line, just like the original. You just have to pronounce it right.

Okay, so I'm not a poet... :cry:

Hun:
---------------------------------------------------
Eng:
Now THIS is pretty! And here I thought that I'm the only Hungarian around here. :lol: I recommend that you be full of yourself because I only registered BECAUSE OF YOU though I despise forums. :mrgreen:
By the way DANG IT MAN I can't believe that the only other one JUST beats me in the translation. :shock:
Seriously, I also thought about the translation, but I always had a problem with starting up a work even if my abilities are good for it. :oops: Although I can see that you haven't updated in a while and the finished strips were also taken off the net so I don't know what's the situation with the project? :)
(????: Yeah, I think it's not conspicuous one BIT that Bigminded 'ere wrote the stuff twice, but this is firstly kindness so you can hear Hungarian word here as well, secondly it's something interesting for our outsider friends and only thirdly bragging about his translation. :roll:
Oh and don't ask him about me, it's better that way. :| )
