Life would be pretty boring if people were always exactly the same. Predictability may be comfortable to some folks, but people do swap roles, so it's not like this is coming out of nowhere.

In the context of the comic, I like that Peanut was able to display a measure of skepticism with that amused attitude, which does seem to be more in keeping with his character.

Predictability is what killed newspaper comics. You can't just have one of your characters eat too much food again. Sometimes someone's gotta summon a giant spirit dragon.

So wait, will this arc be about Grape and her Pridelands stuff or will it be about the secret santa thing? Or both?

I see no reason why it would not contain elements of both, but I will not hazard a guess as to whether one will be more prominently featured.

IT's no doubt going to be about Pridelands.

I'm just thinking somewhere in the comic though, Rick will throw us a teaser moment. probably right on christmas day.

No, yesterday his wife tried to get him to eat healthy.

I think when Grape sees the author she'll faint and by the time she wakes up she's gone.

Grape is definitely in character. Peanut is a little less excited than I would have expected him to be, but I'm not sure that really counts.

Weren't we just talking about how people aren't static and friends occasionally reverse roles in real life?

You'd think that Peanut would be more excited for a new Pridelands book, since he went so crazy over the last one...

Actually it does make sense since he doesn't want to meet his hero and has obligations to the club plus he'll get to read it anyway when Grape brings it home, possibly first since hes a really fast reader. Also we didn't see how he acted when he first heard that it was coming out so he might have calmed down a bit since then.

In real life dogs can't talk.
I think it works well for Grape, though, it makes her more interesting.

Are you trying to invalidate my statement because this is a comic?
rickgriffin wrote:If people actually pay attention to how others act, friends DO swap roles like that. I realized this while I was drawing the comic, and that when I've had Peanut express 'annoyance' before (like Grape would) it rang false, so I changed it to 'amused'.
Why should characters not act in a manner analogous to real life if their creator so desires?

Doesn't bother me, I'm just pointing out that I don't worry about how the comic relates to real life.

Characters can change in responce to the will of there creator. Unless the creator developes an Authors complex, Then the characters tend to act of there own accord....

Well yeah, characters change and shift. But you can also reveal a new side of the character without it being contradictory, too.

Awkward.

I don't see the big deal...Peanut and Grape are meant to balance each other out...so if Grape is being too fangirlish, then Peanut has to calm her down a bit. That's how their chemistry works.

Yes, but it's usually Grape who calms Peanut down a bit.

It's been reiterated several times, some of which by people who actually matter, that not every comic has to be a crazy guy and his voice of reason. Characters are allowed to be more complicated than that.

And an ATHF reference in Housepets! would have been weird. *giggles*

I've got the creeping sensation that tomorrow's comic will feature Peanut dancing around wearing a clown suit with Grape (wearing spectacles, a bowler hat, and a long coat) correcting him in a refined English accent just to spite us...
except that actually would be funny...
