Break-Less 2 - BrickBreaker style game, but "endless".

PUBLIC RELEASE 1 DOWNLOAD: http://www.yoyogames.com/games/152517-break-less-2
Break-Less 2 is a game I have been developing since about September 24th, even though the changelog doesn't go that far back. :s

Anyways, Break-Less 2 is a brick breaker clone, except that it's "endless". By "endless" I mean that there is only one level. Yes, one level.
How can that be?
Well, the game starts you off in a room like this shown below:
Image
Looks pretty basic, huh.

When the ball hits a brick(s) they will jump to a random position on the screen.
Eventually the game will look similar to this: (This was before I applied a background. :s)

That's pretty much how the game works, not really much to describe.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Wait, wait, wait. Why is it called Break-Less 2, and not Break-Less 1?
You guys didn't know.
If you're interested, go here.

Keep in mind Version 6/PR6 of the game will not be released at that link. BL1 is actually going open source with PR5.5.
Yeah, I never finished PR6. And I don't plan on doing so.

You said "PR6". What does it mean?
PR- is the number of times it's been publicly updated as a stable release.
PR1 = Public Release 1
PR2 = Public Release 2
etc. etc.

What all are you using to create this?
FL Studio 9 (Sound)
- 3xOsc plugin
GIMP 2.6 (Graphics)
Game Maker 8 Pro (Game Engine)
- GM Bassmod Extension (XM, IT, MOD, S3M, and MO3 Playback)
- SuperSound v1 Extension (OGG Playback)

Have you ever thought of integrating Steamworks into this?
I have. And I'm not, it just seems a bit too complicated.
If I did, I would hope it would be free. It's not your $40 game. More like $10, maybe $5.
Let's just say it's a simple game made by one person.

Is there in-game music? You never mentioned anything about it.
You can choose your own via the Options menu, or pressing the M key while playing.
It currently supports WAV, MP3, OGG, XM, IT, S3M, MOD, and MO3.

When do you plan on releasing PR1?
Hopefully by November 19th. I need to make sure all the bugs I can possibly fix are fixed, which is why the PR1 Open Beta 3 is being released today.

Where's Open Beta 1 and 2?
They were released to certain people, and I let them give it to whoever wanted to try it.

OTHER INFORMATION
I recommend you look at the "INFORMATION" section of the game first. It might help you some.

PR2 will have an update check. PR1 won't, just because it's the first release, and I can't edit the .exe file I upload on the internet. I'm sure if you think about it, you'll get what I'm saying.

The game is only ~5MB at this point. Will it hit 6MB? I don't think it will.

.JPG/JPEG .PNG and .BMP are supported background formats.

Let me know what you guys think. Please.
Please.

Report any bugs you see.
Please.

Fixed bugs and/or additions since PR1:

1.0.1-PR2devel [build 379 111910-2353]
Fixed effect bugs. Let's just say I sorta-kinda rushed out PR1 there.

1.0.2-PR2devel [build 380 112010-0010]
Added the update check to the game. Website should be in-game this time.
(Note: There's some script error with the embedded website. Just let it continue to run scripts, it should look normal within about 10 seconds or more.)

1.1-PR2devel [build 384 112010-0037]
Update the loading images.
Add the play time counter to the game.

1.1.1-PR2devel [build 389 112010-1531]
Added a line below the void to show how far you are from reaching 1st place on the highscore table.
Try the pause dimmer once more.
Switch from the Consolas font to DejaVu Sans Mono just in case some licensing issue comes up.
Fix the Update Check's sprite's collision mask.

1.2-PR2devel [build 397 112610-1823]
Remove GMBassmod and Supersound to allow FMOD to function correctly.
AIFF, FLAC, and WMA are now playable. MP3, WAV, OGG, XM, IT, MOD, and S3M are now supported through FMOD. No more support for MID and MO3.

1.2.1-PR2devel [build 401 112610-2134]
Pause keybind is now integrated into the game. It's no longer a message.

Random thoughts on stuff to add:

"Smasher" powerup. Allows the ball to head straight through bricks, instead of bouncing off of them.
I think I might make This will deactivate upon hitting a wall.

Play time counter. Will be viewable through the Stats menu and in-game.
This won't be in MM:SS format, rather, it will be just minutes. (4.5M = 4 minutes and 30 seconds in-game)
Since delta time is not working with the game properly, the time will also be affected by FPS.

(If I can get FMOD working) Music info on the void bar.
Artist and title tags only, there isn't a time counter command included with FMOD. I stand corrected. There is in fact a time counter.

(If I can get FMOD working) NSF (NES chiptunes), SPC(?) (SNES music files), and WMA (Windows Media Audio) support for music. All other formats would also be replaced by FMOD.
Forget the NSF and SPC format. It looks like I'm not able to load input plugins.
There's more file supported than I had originally thought. 20 in all, to be exact.

Stats, info, and all other stuff will no longer be in .ini format. (Maybe)
It's still technically a .ini file. The extension wouldn't be .ini though. It will probably be something like .bl2data or something.
Now if I can find something that compresses files in-game, I would certainly try it out just so I can keep players from editing statistics.

That stats menu was a pain to add.
if you had the source (which you won't), you would see "ini_read_real("blah","blah",0)" everywhere.

Oh crap.
OHHHHH crap.

I JUST LOST THE WHOLE CHANGELOG.

Someone who has the beta, can you PLEASE copy-paste it and send it to me through a PM.

PLEEEEASSSEE

Never mind, I just went into panic mode and didn't realize I could just run the .exe and get it.

Fixed for PR1.
It was a positioning issue with the paddle.

<sorry if this is considered triple posting, but this good news>

I found an extension allowing Winamp input plugins.

The means you might see the following music files now supported through it:
MP3, WMA, OGG, AAC, M4A, CDA, WAV, XM, IT, MOD, S3M, MO3, NSF, FLAC, NSA, and anything else Winamp 5 can play by default.

Oh, and this will be the 1.0 update. :D
But it won't be 1.0 until I can fix as many bugs/glitches as I can. D:

Their extension moderators are terrible. It doesn't work.
*sigh* Oh well.

Moderator Edit: Please don't triple-post. That's as many as three posts. And that's terrible.

Update:
FMOD is working. There's even a very slight FPS increase because of it.
WMA, AIFF, and FLAC are now supported background music types in PR2. However, I had to get rid of MID and MO3.
MID because I'm not going to go find a SF2 sound-bank just so this works. Good ones are ~15-40MB, and I'm trying to keep the filesize down.
MO3 simply because it's not supported by FMOD.

The integrated pause menu is working so far. I plan on adding some detailed information to it sometime before the Open Beta 2 release.

One major expectation to add for PR2 is a better Options menu. Mainly just cosmetic fixes, but I will add a volume slider for background music and the ability to toggle effects on and off.

If I do find a way to compress the stats and highscores .ini files, I will include an application to convert PR1 highscores and stats into files PR2 can use. (Settings are not affected by compression.) So now you won't lose anything. :)

Open Beta 1 will be out on December 6th.
Open Beta 2 will be out on December 15th.

I could also really use your suggestions too. Just don't suggest anything having to do with 3D graphics, that would involve redoing the whole game.
