A condemned man is given a chance to be pardoned by the king. He places two marbles in a sac, one white and one black.
The next day, in front of a crowd gathered for the event, he will pick a marble unseen from the sac that will decide his fate.If it's white, he will be set free, and if it's black, he will hang.

That night, a confidante tells him that the king has secretly placed two black marbles in the sac.

What should the condemned man do to ensure that he will be set free, after drawing a single marble?

Is that Deltora Quest? They have a similuar one. In fact they have the same one so that must be the book but I won't spoil it by revealing the answer.

That wasn't the book and this is an old riddle, so it has probably been published in various forms for quite a while.

The correct answer has yet to be given, so keep guessing.

The character in the book has the bag and knows that both balls are black, but can't reveal it or the king will kill him so he takes out one and doesn't reveal what it is, then trips over and throws it in the fire. He takes out the second, and seeing it is black says that the one he picked must be white. This might be different for the purpose of the book though.
