What's today?

Well, I had an idea for the game for a little while (though it started as just a small random thing... Eh, not important), and currently it's a bit like the "Who's who?"... With a few twists. Let me try and explain it in a few steps:
1) Look at your current date (for example - February, 3rd)
2) Think of anything that happened on the day (just stay within forums guidelines) and find a somehow related picture (for example, if you thought of Luna-9 landing on the Moon, post... A picture of the Moon, or R-7 rocket, etc.).
3) Post the picture, stating the date (for timezone differences) and what you're asking for - person, object, or an event?
4) See others guess (and feel free to hint once a day).
4a) If you were not the one who guessed the picture - go ahead and try looking up (remembering?) what it is supposed to represent!
5) If you've guessed the answer - you have a day to post a new picture. If you are the one who posted, you can post hints once a day... And if no one has guessed the answer in 3 days (times subject to change) - say what it was, and, hopefully, post a new one for being correct.
5a) Feel free to pass on the task of making up a new "quiz" to anyone else if you can't or don't want to do that.
6) If no picture is posted after this one day period, we'll find a new one.

...Yap, I made a huge mess out of the explanation. Let's see how it goes, anyways?
So, it's 23rd of March for me already. And the person I want you to look for is closely related to this "little" thing:

Good luck!

Hmh, simplified test ended up a bit too simple
But yah, he was born on 23/03/1912. Your turn, I guess, dear sir.

Do I stick with the 23rd?

Yah, unless you're in a timezone that still has 22nd and want to use it.

*party* Indeed.

Your turn, Mister Render.

Ah, nice. Had no idea what you meant with the man of the hour. Haven't found any for yesterday.

But nevermind, it's still the 23rd here, so I go back to VEB's date and I also search for a person.

You need a hint? The event happened in the 18th century. I still search the person for this event connected to this galaxy.

Was the person born the 23rd or the event happened the 23rd?

The connection between the galaxy and the person is the event that happend on the 23rd.

Would've been hard to find without the century hint, Render!
Person in question is Edward Pigott, and date is discovery of M64 (Black Eye) galaxy on 23/03/1779?

...thank you, specialised websites

Let's try a bit more difficult (keyword "try") thing, shall we? Feel free to write any guesses.

This person here is related somehow to an event I ask you to find out. It happened on 25th of March.
Hint - 2 logical "steps" (connection?) to be made here.

Hmmm... that's pretty hard. I have something in mind. Was there a dog involved?

by VEB152
No, it doesn't really involve any animals, even if we count nicknames... He is responsible for both the event and the "group of people" that made it possible, though, to the point of latter being named after him (before that, though).

Willy Messerschmitt?

For the next hint you have to wait, because VEB's asleep (I hope for him ;)).

I guess the person's Russian.
My guess was the start of Sputnik 10 the last Sputnik and the final test prior the flight of Juri (can't write him with Y...) Gagarin who could be the person on the picture. But I could not find that photo on the web while searching for Juri Gagarin. So I think, it's not him. But I have no idea at the moment.

Oh.

Well I went scouring for anything that happened in aviation on the 25th.

Messerschmitt opened Messerschmitt AG on that date. The plane could be a prototype of some sort.

There isn't that much degree of separation though, so I'm just kind of shooting blindly into the air.

I don't think that the person is Willy Messerschmitt. He was too old already for that picture with that model. But the model could be a Messerschmitt...

Maybe a person from the GDR...

Re: What's today?

I doubt it. The GDR used MiGs and Sukhois.

I'm stuck.

Does this mean he won?

He won the thread? What?

I don't know.
This is hurting the brain.

He didn't win (not yet...) - we still have 4 hours...

And his prize if he wins will be that he has to set up a new one. XD

But maybe he'll give us another hint and some more time...

Is it John Young? The Space Shuttle Columbia which he commanded was delivered to the Kennedy Space Centre on March 25th 1979. Young was also a test pilot so he may have flown a plane like the one in the photo although that does look rather early...

To Hlaoroo - no, nice guess, but he was way too young when the photo of a different person was taken.
Now yah, extra 24 hours more could be added - I left quite early yesterday and returned late today... And for that, let's go through your guesses and answer the questions.
ArcWolf wrote:Willy Messerschmitt?
No, though I was thinking of him a while ago for another date.
ArcWolf wrote:He won the thread? What?
Erm... I initially planned this to not be a "permanent win" kind of game, just something for entertainment and random fact digging. Looks like I really overdid it this time... Oh well, calibrating the difficulty is difficult and random -

Hint time? Let's point out correct things you've all named related to the questions here!
Render wrote:I guess the person's Russian.
Yap, he spent all of his life in modern-day Russia.
ArcWolf wrote:I don't know.

My sincere apologies...
Hlaoroo wrote:Young was also a test pilot so he may have flown a plane like the one in the photo although that does look rather early...
John Young, as I've said, has nothing to do with what I asked about, but you're right about the guess on age and photographs. It was taken in 1942.
Also, surprisingly, decade is correct.

...and as a reminder - event is not about him directly, though he was involved quite largely.

Dates didn't help either? Awww.
Well, then let's expland off where we were. ArcWolf mentioned Willie Messerschmitt, right? The two had similar "occupations", though the event I ask for is not related to a fighter or a bomber airplane, which are what Willie is more known for (here at least).
Or you would agree on me naming the person, and then go on directly to figuring out the event then?

Don't know if VEB will be here today/tomorrow (sunday), he didn't know it himself...

I already know the solution, have asked him... I think, I can give a heavy hint, the person on the photo could celebrate his 120th birthday just at this moment.
Now you should be able to find out who that is.

His 120th birthday is on the 25th? Or just around about this time of year?

Sergey Vladimirovich Ilyushin!

Holy crap! I thought Messerschmit, MiG but not Ilyushin.

Terribly disappointed in myself.

That's half of the reason I was silent, was thinking everyone has just given up completely...
Second half is definitely not me losing track of time overall...
Hlaoroo wrote:So what's the connection between him and March 25?
...a group of people and then the event in question? Given ArcWolf's reaction, I suppose you'll have the answer soon.

Found it! On March 25, 1971 the first Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft had its maiden flight! The Ilyushin Il-76 was built by the Илью́шин (Ilyushin Design Bureau)
which was founded by Sergey Vladimirovich Ilyushin (Серге́й Владимирович Илью́шин)

That was a hard one considering I don't know anything about Russian aviation. :P
