Think I got it...
April 05, 1949 the first episode of the television series Fireside Theater aired.
PS: When seeing the firestation I first thought of this lightbulb.

Now here's something for you for today, April 9th. I'm looking for a person.
(Hope it's not too easy. But probably it is.)

Re: What's today?
Maybe it's time for some hints...
- I'm looking for the person wearing the helmet.
- The picture is from his first season.
- In his first race, he has directly taken the pole position and finished it on the podium.
- He won the first time in his fourth race.
- He nearly finished his first season as world champion, but lost it against his team mate because he couldn't finish the last race due to technical problems.
Should be sufficient...

Jacques Villeneuve being born on 9/4/1971? The first hint seemed helpful
Yes, that is about the best thing to write that I could think of.

Re: What's today?
Official end of Napoleon Bonaparte first reign in 1814.
The Allied Powers having declared that Emperor Napoleon was the sole obstacle to the restoration of peace in Europe, Emperor Napoleon, faithful to his oath, declares that he renounces, for himself and his heirs, the thrones of France and Italy, and that there is no personal sacrifice, even that of his life, which he is not ready to do in the interests of France.
Done in the palace of Fontainebleau, 11 April 1814.
Signed by Napoleon on the 13th, dated to the 12th by him.

*nods* exactly that, Render. *sighs* I should have used the palace of Fontainebleau instead...

Seems that it was WAY too easy...
Go on Arc!
Sorry VEB, knowing that was 'your day', but I needed to do that.

1928, Junkers W33 took off from (nearly) Dublin, and landed 37 hours later on a Greenly island in Canada, becoming the first airplane to fly across Atlatic east to west non-stop.

Re: What's today?
I was a little confused at first because I was thinking it was relating to when they tried a fast train some time around the turn of the century (I can't remember exactly when) and they though that going that fast would horribly disfigure and injure people because of the g-forces so they put up screens so spectators couldn't see it. I got there in the end though.
Here's one for April 13th. It might be hard. I'm looking for an event that relates in an indirect manner to this picture.

Re: What's today?
I'm totally stuck. Have no idea at the moment.
These information I found out:
- it's an Olifant.
- displayed in the Louvre OA4069
- dated late 11th century
- origin: south Italy
Maybe it helps somebody, maybe not. I don't know.

Re: What's today?
There were two separate patents for different types of washing machines filed on April 16, on in 1928 and one in 1936. Are they what you're after?

Re: What's today?
The brand appears to be General Electric (which we don't have in Australia) but I can't find any link between that and April 16 unless I'm looking in the wrong place.

*facepaw* This was much easier with the right date.
GE was formed on April 15, 1892 by the amalgamation of two smaller companies.

I would like to ask everybody to state the right date in the post, just to prevent such misunderstandings.

On April 20th, 1951 the Romanian surgeon Dan Gavriliu performed the first total surgical replacement of the human esophagus, it was the first successful replacement of a human organ.

Re: What's today?
Yeah, not it, sorry. Not even close.
This is not so much an event as something that happened to a particular person on the 20th April, if that makes any sense.

Re: What's today?
And, now we have the 22nd of April, ladies and gentlemen. What has happened with such a beautiful thing a "few" years ago?
Added - not a single guess? O_o Okay, hint time then it is!
The event I'm asking for is closely related to the ship's route (or, rather, what was on the route). And that is guessed by the flags you see on the ship.

Re: What's today?
So long time and nobody tried it... So I needed to get it.
Long searching for the right details, first I got the wrong flag, I thought it's the old british merchant flag with the old Union Jack, but there was no clue of these ships when the flag was in use (1707-1801). So it was probably the newer version with the new Union Jack (since 1801) (shame on the artist who wasn't really good at drawing the flag).
Then I found the SS President which looked similar, but not the same. The same company owned SS Sirius, which arrived in New York on her first voyage from Cork after only 18 days on April 22nd, 1838. Despite the fact that she was overpacked with coal, the coal ran low, the crew burned cabin furniture, spare yards and one mast.

Well, hooray! That is the ship and event I had in my mind! Would have been a nice event to go along with ArcWolf's Atlantic crossing of Junkers W33
