Happy 35th Birthday, Jenson Alexander Lyons Button!
Re: What's today?
Correct. Should have gone with Bob Gerard. Interestingly 6 racing drivers born on the 19th, 4 are/were F1 drivers, 2 British.

Okay, you need a hint! For those who couldn't identify the building, here's the company's logo:

Nobody?
Okay, then I'll tell you. I was looking for Marcel Boulestin, who became the first chef in a TV cooking show. The show "Cook’s night out" aired the first time on January 21st in 1937.

So, here's something new. What happened today (26th of January) some years ago?

That... Took me on way more tangents than I'm comfortable with admitting.

1616, the Dutch seafarers Willem Cornelisz Schouten and Jakob Le Maire discovred Cape Horn.
Schouten and Le Maire wrote:“... on 29 January 1616 we saw land againe lying north west and north northwest from us, which was the land that lay South from the straights of Magelan which reacheth Southward, all high hillie lande covered over with snow, ending with a sharpe point which wee called Cape Horne [Kaap Hoorn] ...”

Re: What's today?
That looks suspicuiously like a Raven. I'm guessing this is either something to do with the Tower Of London, or Edgar Allan Poe
If so, this'll be all too easy. Let's do some not-so-shallow digging in Google...

Quoth The Blue Fox; You coulda come up with something more obscure than THAT, Render.Wikipedia wrote:"The Raven" was first attributed to Poe in print in the New York Evening Mirror on January 29, 1845.

Gratz, Thom, that's right. It's your turn now.
Nobody even tried the last more obscure thing.. Also not when typing the words and the date into google would bring the result. So I picked something more easy. The Blue Fox wrote:You coulda come up with something more obscure than THAT, Render.

Re: What's today?
Well I knew yer last thing had to be a BBC cookery show, but the only BBC cookery show I knew of was Ready, Steady, Cook, and that didn't come on till the 90's, and TV was in colour by then, and at any rate I had no idea who the guy was.
Anyway I'll do some digging and see what I can come up with for my challenge...
Oh-ho-hooo...I got a good one here.
First clue;

Franklin D Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882. He was stricken with polio which left him without the use of his legs, hence the picture of the child with leg braces.

Re: What's today?
Of course a British person would recognise Her Majesty's personal flag. ^^
Well done, TBF.
The exact phrasing I was looking for was "Elizabeth II accedes to the throne after the death of her father, King George VI" but you were clsoe enough so I'll give it to you.
Although she wasn't coronated until June the next year, in British tradition, the monarch never dies so Her Majesty was technically speaking queen from the instant her father passed away and remains Queen Regnant to this day.
Long Live the Queen!
Your turn, TBF.

First I thought if might be Paris, the planes looked like Concordes to me...
But then I found an event that happened 50 Years ago at the John F. Kennedy International Airport. The Beatles arrived there on their first trip to the US.

Ah, nice.
Here's a (maybe) hard thing. Something happened on the night of 8 to 9 February many years ago. It was discovered the next morning and the following drawing was created.

Re: What's today?
Good thing I like reading mystery books. I knew this one without even having to look it up.
On the night of 8-9 February, and for a couple of nights after there was a heavy snowfall in Dorset and Devon, England. In this snowfall, hoof prints appeared in single file across a couple of towns. It's estimated they covered between 40-100 miles. The footprints apparently went straight over walls, roofs and haystacks in their path. Due to lack of evidence, no one has ever been able to fully explain the marks.

You're right, Hlaoroo... They've been called "Devil's Footprints" and most senseful explanation is that it have been hopping rodents (like wood mice) that have caused this trails while searching for food. But nobody knows for sure.

Re: What's today?
Okay, I'll give it a try.
I found two things, the first being 1910 - Emanuel Lasker defended his title as World Chess Champion against Carl Schlechter.
And the second is from 1996 where Deep Blue defeated the reigning world champion Garry Kasparov in the first game of their match.
It's hard to decide what to pick, but I think I'll go with the 1996 event.

Well, you did twice as well as I did, Render, but I'm afraid you don't get any bonus points.
1996 was the correct answer! Deep Blue was an IBM computer if anyone is wondering.

Re: What's today?
Okay, no idea who the guy is. Thought he might be an astronaut but the suit's the wrong colour.
All I'm getting from the second clue is it's supposedly something to do with hot air balloons.
Looked up 21st February Hot air balloons, got nothing.
I imagine this is some kinda world record. I thought it mighta been Felix Baumgartner but his supersonic skydive was in October according to Wikipedia.
So nope, no idea what it is so far.
