Hehe, quite a bit of a size difference there! But awesome nonetheless.

Nah, that's going to be Diss. Frostwood are going to be part of Diss's court.Civilization wrote:trying to gain favor with the future rulers of the world...
Anyway, I should say that both pictures are awesome. You guys should get them printed and framed in your houses, if nothing else as something to have until you can meet up in real life and get some actual pictures together.

So uh, you may know of a picture of me on the PaPoY thread. Anyway, I drew over it and created this self portrait.

Re: Art Thread
So I wanted to try a bit of drawing because I was bored, and I came up with this. I may have some plans for drawings with this character in the future, but I would like to see how you guys think of it before I go ahead with it. I haven't really drawn before, so I would like some tips, and some constructive criticism, if anyone has any opinions. (Also, James McKade is just a random name that I made up that sounds cool).

Not bad for beginner work, I'm having a hard time believing this is a first attempt...
That said, I can see a few glaring errors.
-hands appear to be different sizes, though i'll count that one as being forgivable since i do that my self from time to time.
-shading is barely noticeable and lacks a consistent direction or technique.
-Not sure if the fur tufts were supposed to make the character look fluffy or scraggly, but they're definitely coming off as the latter. If your intention was the former, try to give them a more consistent pattern to where they pop up, and make them point almost parallel to the outline, not perpendicular.
-character looks lopsided; i swear one of the ears looks like it's too close to the center line, the elbows don't look like they're even distances from the shoulders even though they more or less are (practice with perspective should fix that), and it's hard to tell where the knees are, but it feels like one is lower than the other.
-bog-standard color scheme. 'Black with red accents' was already running into problems with overuse in the late 90s, let alone today. A third color to add a bit more variety wouldn't hurt.
Most important thing I've learned from D&D?
No matter how tempting it may be, as a DM I can't both present a problem and solve it.
Every time a DMPC or NPC fixes something a payer couldn't i'm diminishing and undermining that player's contribution.

Re: Art Thread
Thanks for all the comments, I'm gonna start working on my next picture now
Thank you for the tips, I will make sure to try fixing those up in my next project. I feel like the hardest thing to fix will be the shading, but that will hopefully come to me with practice.Buster wrote:That said, I can see a few glaring errors.
I did make the curtains purple for a reason... All will be explained when I finish the next picture, although this one took me quite awhile so we will see when that happens.Hukley wrote:@TheBlasterizer: Oh, that looks really cool. Reminds me a bit of FNAF

Re: Art Thread
Here. Just a repost of stuff I've said before, but might help.
-gray shadows on brightly colored objects can sometimes look odd. If this happens, tint the highlights one color, and the shadows the opposite color. Sunlight, and incandescent bulbs (old style round lightbulbs) Have a faint yellow tinge, and the shadows sometimes look blue-gray. however, if you're out of direct sunlight, the ambient light outside is often slightly blue, no idea why probably something to do with the sky? or might be greenish if the light is filtering through a lot of trees. Flourescent bulbs and LEDS have a faint blue tint to their light, and the shadows can sometimes look a yellowy-brown. Camera and Cell-Cam flashes, halogen lights, and studio/stage lights rarely have a noticeable tint to them unless it's deliberate or they're old/dirty. Computer monitors, TV's, and LCD devices aren't usually bright enough to create much in the way of highlighting, but they will generally tint everything around them the average color of what they're showing, which is more often than not a pale blue or green.
A good way to practice:
if you want your characters to have more consistent proportions and look (for lack of a better term) more alive, watch movies and while they're playing try to draw what the characters are doing without pausing or taking screenshots. try to do 5-6 a day. They don't need to be big, don't spend more than a few minutes per picture, and don't worry about the fine details the first few hundred times. it's not about getting the details for that one character right, it's about getting the basic shapes and movements down. They'll probably look like blobs at first. Try to do this a few times a week, preferably daily but I know that's not practical for some people. It will improve your skills, shouldn't take more than an hour or so out of your day, and as a bonus, you have an excuse to re-watch all of your favorite movies, and plenty of new ones.
It's like practicing an instrument. It's about repetition, accuracy will come in time. The idea is that after a while you'll be able to draw those poses from memory without needing a reference picture. Speaking of repetition, get a sketch book. Cause even if you're putting all of your practice sketches on the same page you are going to burn through paper FAST. better to have it all in one place.
Also try to avoid drawing too many pictures in other people's styles you're copying. A lot of artists have a particular set of proportions they use that wouldn't carry over well to someone else's style, or to your own once you come up with one. You stick to copying one style too much and you get used to that proportion set, which will wreak havoc on a little thing called muscle memory. fan work is fine, but at least half of your stuff should be your own.
Lastly, if you get up to a point where you don't seem to be getting better, or if you just want tips, show your work to other people. And don't get defensive if they nitpick it; believe it or not, that's actually a GOOD thing. You WANT to know where you've picked up bad habits, or have been making errors. That said, don't focus too too much on that side of things either, as it can get depressing real quick if you start tuning out the comments about what you're doing right and let self doubt sink in.
And one I forgot to mention last time i brought this up:Shading tricks:
-Hard objects tend to have more pronounced shading than softer objects because they're shiny.
-Fuzzy objects tend to look best if they have jagged edges to their shading. as if you're seeing individual hairs/strands/feathers/ whatever. shrink your brush down really small and make a row of tiny lines really close together, don't worry about being neat. messy actually works just as well.
- polished metallic objects pick up reflections, meaning they will probably have more than one highlight, making it look like there is no shadowed area just a band of alternating mid-tones between two or more lights. gradients work really well here if you know how to use em properly. also the highlights are always pure white at the center. things that shiny pick up a glare. (if you really want to go the extra mile, use the smudge tool and some dark patches to make it look like there are distorted reflections of actual objects in the 'band' part)
-dull metallic objects are just hard objects with glares.
Awesome draw, Hukley! You and your creation are so lovely together. Great background, too.
Nice work with the portrait, SuperStar.
Very nice work, TheBlasterizer. If that's really your first, so to say, seriously made digital draw, you wouldn't need any tip to improve, you can go ahead by yourself. Keep it up!
