"Sstuffin''eck," Sarah called, grabbing one of the medical packs off the wall- floor, rather - and scooted over to her charge, opening the pack to apply first aid as she'd been trained to do. "Listen up," she told the laird, moving his muzzle with a hand so he was looking directly at her. "Yer not shufflin' off this easy, y'got me, Connal?" She activated the kits' medical alert transmitter as she kept working on the wound.

The console had saved the cat but exploded on Keeva, a blast of heat feeling like it melted her face fur, the light dazzling her eyes and the sound clapping her ears. Things were ringing. Muted things moved through static and snow and blurr as her senses returned to life and something metal touched her.

There was nothing metal about any of the survivors. Indeed, as best she knew in her fogged mind, there was nothing movable like that on board the ship at the moment. It had to be an intruder! Pirates! She wheeled on the thing as it lifted her up and took it by her cybernetic hand under what sheassumed to be its' neck. "Not that easy to kill," she said through bloodied teeth, not really seeing anything right now.

As soon as the Steelhaven had made its way into the Beacon and the gravity and atmosphere returned, Doctor Vanderbilt deftly managed to not end up sprawled out on his face by landing sprawled out on his back instead. He huffed and pushed himself up, "Warnings are a thing that can be given when a large change is about to happen..." he muttered under his breath. After standing up he opened his medical bag and pulled out a smaller, more compact individual first aid kit. It was a little more robust than the ones hanging around on the walls of the ship, but it was small enough to remain out of the way. He dropped the bag on the floor and clipped the first aid kit to his waist. He lifted his wrist to his mouth and spoke into the communicator, "Vanderbilt and Co. have arrived at the bridge hatch. Conall's medical alert has gone off so I'm going to be gone for a little while longer. Out." He signed off and turned around to the group, "Follow Lieutenant Walker's commands and don't let him do anything stupid." He grins and bangs on the hatch a few times before hurrying off down the hall. He hesitated momentarily when he saw Corp at the end of the corridor with his weapon drawn, but drew his own service weapon and slowly made his way up to the mouse.

----------

Chris rolled his eyes, or he would have, "Hey you, I can feel what you're feeling. Lighten up. I might not be a metal behemoth but I'm not exactly the most frail creature here. Maybe they'll cut it off and I can get a cool robot arm with a bunch of tools in it so I don't have to lug around a toolbox wherever I go. Besides, help is here and as long as this thing doesn't get infected it'll be fine."

As the pirate ships began warping in around the Steelhaven, Lewis swore at himself under his breath. He should’ve known this “Beacon” was too good to be true. No rational person would ever name their ship something so..... Wait, where did the stars go? As he peered out the window to figure out what was going on, his jaw dropped as he realized that the thing that was blocking the stars was a completely massive spaceship, easily a couple of miles in diameter. It looked like the kind of thing that so long to build that it was completely obsolete by the time it was finished. But this ship was apparently so powerful (or it had a good enough reputation) that the pirates ran as soon as it showed up. His mind continued pondering all the implications of what kind of society could build a ship like that until Hivemind’s message got his attention. ”Thanks for the save Beacon. As a side note, the size of your ship has us wondering whether we’re in the same universe we were in a couple of minutes ago, so I would appreciate it if you could answer two questions. One, what is the current state of the landmass known as Florida, and two, does the name “Insignia” bring any bells?”
Play The Hayseed Knight. This isn’t self promotion, I just really like the game.

I don't know what I'm doing right now...I need to fix several things, and I am incredibly lost....I just want to give myself a second to think....and it isn't easy when you have a being who is literally roughly 10-15 % of the population himself, if not more."
Hivemind paused for a second, considering him. Finally, he spoke up. "All right, Jolty. If you need space right now, then I'll give it to you. If you need anything, or just want someone to talk to, just call for me." And with that, the droid walked off.

"Okay! I was just making sure." The droid said, raising his hands up slightly. "All right. Now that the lecture is over, is there anything you felt like doing today? You could probably find whatever it is yourself by pure chance, but if you want a guide, I can show you around."

---------------------

(Training room)

Hivemind materialized the enemies and the VIP as soon as everyone was in the training area. The enemies were pretty much exactly what he said. The swarming chargers made up the bulk of the offensive force, but towards the back there were human special operations soldiers, explosive specialists in armored exoskeletons, lightly armored scout vehicles, and two tanks equipped with rail cannons.

Then the civilian materialized.

A whisper, felt by the fabric of reality yet inaudible to anyone within it, spoke out from nearby. Let yourselves see what must be done.

The civilian shimmered slightly as it took form. It was the form of the hated, broken and wretched.

(Kobor and Talya only)
To the twins, the civilian would take the form of an unarmed Ghrakk adolescent. Injured, and afraid for it's life, the young snake creature fled as fast as it could to the shade and shelter of the natural bridge.

(Kolt only)
To Kolt, and even Quint seeing as the source of the hallucination wasn't hatred, the civilian took the form of Allsight, Kolt's hated enemy. Only this time... he looked different. Tortured. Like someone who had already paid for all of the crime in the world through his own blood and fear. He looked at Kolt with pleading, desperate eyes before fleeing to the natural bridge.

(Jenny only)
Much like with Kolt, the civilian would look to Jenny much like her most hated enemy, Sevastopol. Though again, like Kolt's vision of Allsight, he is barely recognizable in his current broken state. It was like he had been brought up from the depths of Hell where he spent his time being torn apart by shades of his own victims. He looked upon Jenny with fear before running to the natural bridge.

(Everyone else)
Everyone else in the training grounds who didn't have someone to hate, someone they would be tempted to not save, would see the civilian as normal. They had nothing to prove to themselves, so the aspect need not test them.

Welsh Halfwit wrote:Hannabelle swung her feet as she sat on her bed in the safe house and kept her eyes closed. "Something is different," she mused. "I can feel it." She hopped down. "What's going on, Hive?"
The ship vibrated once more very briefly as it resumed it's FTL jump. The Steelhaven was docked, so there was no need to delay any further. Hivemind put more power into the drive to get the ship to move faster to make up for lost time. "There was a stranded shipwreck with survivors on board in our path. We stopped briefly to pick them up, and now we are on our way again." Hivemind responded to Hannabelle.

---------------------

The medical team, as well as several hive droids, had boarded the Steelhaven. One of the medical team, a particularly large human, tore the stuck door off so they could enter.
Welsh Halfwit wrote:The console had saved the cat but exploded on Keeva, a blast of heat feeling like it melted her face fur, the light dazzling her eyes and the sound clapping her ears. "Not that easy to kill," she said through bloodied teeth, not really seeing anything right now.
The "attacker" she had grabbed was one of the hive androids. It had pulled out the debris blocking the way out and entered the room with Keeva and the remaining survivors in the room. When Keeva grabbed him, he responded calmly and simply. "I am Hivemind. My ship, the Beacon of Hope, just picked up the Steelhaven's wreck. I'm going through the ship with a team of medics, doctors, and healers in order to help any injured or trapped survivors. Please let go of my neck now. Do you have any injured that need attending to?"

Welsh Halfwit wrote:Andy dropped from the air with something of a yelp as the atmosphere returned. "Ack!" He was fortunate not to hurt himself as he landed on his side and was upright again after half a second, tense and looking around for what had to come next. He could see robots. Robots! Yay!
After a few minutes, the door to where Andy was opened up and a hive android walked in. It walked up to Andy and gave a small wave. "Hello. I am Hivemind. I'm here to escort you to safety."

Corp would see two people in front of him. One was an android, of normal human height and with light plating designed to protect against light impacts, rather than intense fighting. Standing beside the android was a dark green scaled reptilian. It was shorter than the android, but not by much. He wore black and grey light armor. On his belt were two rather wicked looking daggers. However, those were stowed away. In his right hand, he held some kind of staff topped with a round disk with a stylized carving on it. In his left arm was a box of bottles containing medicines and what could only be described as potions. The android responded to Corp's question. "I am Hivemind. I run the ship that just picked up the Steelhaven. We received a distress signal from you guys and exited our FTL jump early to come help. I have a team of mixed medics, doctors, and healers. Fades here is a healer."

His worst injury is a spectacular shiner which even as he uncurls is beginning to obstruct his vision.
"Ow. Ah... Ah think Ah'm okay..." he replies, straightening out and drying his paws on the towel he'd been unconsciously holding the whole time. He shakes himself and then steps back into the bedroom, slightly disoriented by the debris and dim emergency lighting.
"Are ye still in one piece, Sarah? Where's- [BLEEP]! Conall!"

The laird hadn't been so fortunate. At the moment of impact he'd been polishing rust off his sgian dubh and oiling the blade. Now he lies crumpled below the television, staring in shock at the dagger protruding from his midriff. Fortunately for him it's missed anything vital, although he's still going to need medical assistance quickly.

"Conall! Sarah, help! Where's th' Doc?" Dropping to his knees by his brother, Cailean reaches for his comms earpiece but finds it's become dislodged in the crash. "Dae ye hae comms still?"

At that moment, someone knocked on the door. "This is Hivemind of the Beacon of Hope, responding to the Steelhaven's distress signal. I have healer Tyratea with me right now. Does anyone need help in there?" the voice on the other side responded.

The mechanical dragon didn't feel any better. "I don't know if they know we are in here." Is anyone out there? If you can hear this, there are injured in the maintenance bay. Please respond.

It didn't take him long to get a response. Chris would hear it too. This is Hivemind of the Beacon of Hope. We are on board the Steelhaven attending to the survivors. We are trying to get through to you, but the door is blocked on your side.

MT looked over to the door. Sure enough, the remains of a mech the maintenance people were working on was smashed against it, blocking the way. "Would you like to do the honors, Chris?" MT said, preparing to hand over control to his friend.

talya being the more logical of the two, imediately doubts what she's seeing. The mass readings aren't consistent implying an illusion or some kind of mindtrick, the creature is a carbon copy of the file photo she sent hivemind (though she's forgotten it's the only one she's ever seen, so anyone pulling an imge from her would get that, not just him), and it shouldn't be possible for one of them to be here.

In spite of all of that it takes every bit of willpower she has not to just stomp over to it and put the heel-claw of one of her legs through it's chest. as it is she's out of position and hasn't actually deployed the shield like she was suposed to. every part of her screaming at her that this is her enemy, that if it lives more will come and everyone here will die.

Kobor is not as lucky. Machine-Kaal can't regress, can't revert to a ferral animal driven by pure instinct.

Beast-Kaal can, and under the right conditions even the most diciplined still do.

The sound that comes out of kobor as he strains against locked joints does not belong in any language. it is not a word, not a concept, it is wild. When he forces the eject and springs free of talya's shell there's no masking the wild rage driving him, his cephalopod form's nature broadcasting it plain as day by way of his currently bright crimson color.

It's not clear if talya's hatch snapping shut and catching kobor's back two limbs is accident or intentional, but it stops him milimetres short of being able to reach the simulated civilian.

Talya's mind is already starting to fracture. she's used to him being the one to hold her temper back, not the other way around...
I... I can't do this...
Most important thing I've learned from D&D?
No matter how tempting it may be, as a DM I can't both present a problem and solve it.
Every time a DMPC or NPC fixes something a payer couldn't i'm diminishing and undermining that player's contribution.

Ulrich turned around, once he'd heard the roar, to find Kobor struggling to go after the individual they were supposed to be protecting. He lifted his hands, unsure if this was part of the test or not. A wall flickered into existence in the space between Kobor and the civilian before expanding towards Kobor, to put distance between him and the civilian, and wrapping around him and Talya to create a box. It wove it's way around their feet as well, ensuring that although it wasn't going to force them to stand on it, they shouldn't be able to dig their way out. He let his hands drop to his sides with more than a little worry and confusion.

------------

Doctor Vanderbilt slowly put a hand on Corp's shoulder while holster in get his own weapon, "Davistow that's too specific to be pirates. If they really have doctors then as the CMO you know I'm obligated to help them. Besides, Conall's hurt so I can't sit here much longer; medical alerts don't specify injury, only need. If I remember correctly, he's under care of a security team member. You're all trained with basic first aids, so it's bound to be worse than a scratch..."

------------

Chris grinned and made his way over to the offline mech, grasping it firmly and half heaving, half throwing it away from the door. It landed with a loud boom against a wall of the engineering bay. He deftly gripped the comparatively small handle on the bulkhead and gave it a turn, opening the door. They took a step back, "This really is just too much fun," he commented.

As soon as Quint and Kolt saw the Allsight illusion, they knew something was wrong. At first Kolt it might be Odium, but that theory died when Quint pointed out that he saw it too. Then they thought it might be Hivemind, but that one had too many holes in it to even last ten seconds. Then Kobor went crazy, and that was the straw that pushed Kolt to take back control and cover the two Kaal with a forcefield to go with the one Ulrich summoned. ”Hivemind, you need to shut this simulation down! Something’s trying to mess with our heads, and it’s already gotten to Kobor!”

—MEANWHILE—

”Yeah, in our universe Florida got flooded almost 600 years ago when the ice caps melted, and Insignia is a major terrorist group. So that just confirms this is a different universe. Also, the third one in as many days? That’s..... odd.” Lewis said, wondering whether there was something that was attracting all these disturbances to the Beacon, before dismissing it to focus on more important things. ”Is it Corp? Grey furred mouse, probably pointed a gun at you? Tell him I’ve okayed you to come here, verification code ‘final spice, singular peril.’”

Tatiana saw the swarm of droid units and the other units behind them, and was about to take aim when the twins lunged at the civilian. She gave what could only be called an electric growl, feeling like shooting teammates during an exercise would be a bad idea and fired into the droid swarm, "I swear if those two fail the test for us, I'll kick them back to their home dimension myself!" She continued to fire into the swarm, walking towards them as she did when she heard Kolt's yelling, "Yeah? Well it aint affecting me!" She had to bite her metaphorical tongue for a moment, for whatever reason the entire scenario annoyed Tatiana more than she'd like to admit, she wanted to continue the simulation and not be cheated out of the challenge before her, but she'd rather not say something she'd later regret over the matter. She began to charge her new charge shot and said, "I'd prefer to continue! Back in the Rim, we don't give up! We power through!" To take her mid off the annyoing situation she took the chance to test out her new Charge Shot, and fired it into the swarm.

Ulrich noted that it seemed like the simulation didn't seem like it was any closer to ending; maybe this was Hive's surprise he had talked about. He looked from the twins to the encroaching droid army before stepping towards the army, "Kolt, can you keep an eye on these two? I am going to see if I can disrupt their back line." He broke off into a run, using a light platform to vault himself above the droid army, he figured Tatiana would be better at keeping them at a distance than he would. He created various platforms leading to the back, running along them before he was able to drop down between them. His fists were covered with a couple bars of light acting as knuckledusters which he promptly introduced to the nearest persons face in a nonlethal but still uncomfortable manner.

"The door needs power? All right. We'll see what we can do. Tyratea, do you think you could..." The voice from the other side of the door got quieter as Hivemind spoke to whomever he was with. After a minute, he addressed the people in the room once more. "All right. Stand back from the door."

The door and the computer started to spark as electric power suddenly coursed through it. Now at full power, the door slid open. Into the room walked two vary unusual people. One was an obvious android, seemingly designed for civilian purposes considering the lack of armor it had. The other one was a sort of reptilian humanoid woman. Her scales were electric blue. Her head was adorned with a crest of purple feathers, and she wore a long, elegant set of silk robes. She wielded an ornate staff with a crystal on the top that coursed with power. She looked softly over to the injured canine and spoke to the others. "Please give me some space to work. This will only take a moment." Her voice had a certain hiss or growl to it. It wasn't out of hostility though, that was simply what her voice sounded like. She walked over and kneeled next to Conall. Carefully, she pulled the knife out of him, making sure not to cause further damage. Immediately after, she held the staff next to the wound. The staff glowed as power coursed through it from her hand to the gem to the wound in the form of a beam of light. The wound glowed for a couple minutes as she worked. When she cut off the flow of power and pulled the staff away, the wound was sealed shut.

Two adult cats, one male, one female, followed them, leaning on the human's hulking arms for support and with oxygen masks covering their face. The moment they saw their child, their eyes filled with tears as they found the strength to run to him, embracing the kitten in their arms. Sobbing with joy and relief, they turned to Doctor Vanderbilt and gave him their sincere thanks for saving their child.

It landed with a loud boom against a wall of the engineering bay. He deftly gripped the comparatively small handle on the bulkhead and gave it a turn, opening the door. They took a step back, "This really is just too much fun," he commented.
I know, right?! The robot dragon said in Chris's mind. Now to meet whoever it is behind the dooooo.... uh...

The two people behind the door were both robots. One of them was a human android, but that wasn't the one that caught MT's attention. It was the second one, a robotic anthropomorphic dragon with a very similar design to himself. It was smaller and more streamlined, as it was clearly not meant to carry a passenger. It's eye pieces were in two separate parts unlike MT's singular goggle-like screen. However, MT couldn't help feel... odd... about seeing this new dragon.

"Ah! Excellent." The humanoid robot said as the two entered. "Thanks for that. My name is Hivemind, and this is Cyber. We have medical supplies to treat any injuries we can while we wait for some of our medics to be freed up."

Looking at this other dragon is causing me to have an existential crisis... but I have no idea why. MT whispered in Chris's mind.

Buster wrote:talya being the more logical of the two, imediately doubts what she's seeing.

It wove it's way around their feet as well, ensuring that although it wasn't going to force them to stand on it, they shouldn't be able to dig their way out. He let his hands drop to his sides with more than a little worry and confusion.

The second Kobor lost it, Hivemind knew something was very wrong here. He didn't know what was happening in their heads. He only saw the Kaal going berserk and attacking the very thing they were supposed to protect, and endangering the rest of the team in the process. In the stands, the champion veterans looked on in shock and disapproval. The cloaked old man in the back sighed. "They are not ready..." He said to himself. Shaking his head, he faded before vanishing from view.

The civilian now looks like a normal human to all characters.

Hivemind decided to pause the simulation before someone got hurt. The enemies and the civilian froze in place. A hive droid stormed into the arena. "CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT THE **** JUST HAPPENED?!"

”To be honest sir? I have no clue.” Kolt said, sounding very confused and worried. ”When the civilian first formed, it looked, at least to me, like Allsight. My first thought was that it might be because of tall, dark, and petty, but Quint could see it too, so that theory was a bust. Then I thought maybe you made him look like that, but I couldn’t think of a single reason why you’d do that, so that one was scrapped too. Then Kobor went berserk, and I just figured that something was trying mess with our heads, so I trapped those two so they wouldn’t hurt anyone, and called for you to shut down the simulation.” He seemed to calm down slightly as he explained his thought process, the judgmental gaze of those in the tower not even crossing his mind. ”And if it’s all the same to you sir, I’d like to keep them in there until we’re sure Kobor isn’t going to murder anyone.”
Play The Hayseed Knight. This isn’t self promotion, I just really like the game.

Tatiana was still, much like the simulation that failed to give her even the satisfaction of seeing her new charge shot in action. Her first movement after the simulation was to holster her rifle and cross her arms as she stood upright, but aside from that she was once again near perfectly still, not even giving a glance to the others as Hivemind yelled at the others, the only indication that something boiled underneath her seemingly calm shell was the fact her vocal modulator seemed to have been deactivated.

Chris snorted, "Oh my god I thought you were in love for a second." He thought for a second, "So I know you know what I'm thinking but I just want to say it out loud. Maybe this is the other-dimensional version of you? I mean, mechanical dragon to mechanical dragon. Seems a little too "right place, right time" to be a coincidence, doesn't it? Or maybe it's just a coincidence and you're really in love." Chris gave MT a mental shrug, "I wouldn't use to many processes thinking about it. I'm sure you'll figure it out eventually. OH! Maybe you're having a midlife crisis brought on by seeing what looks like a better more up-to-date version of yourself."
Chris looked down at the humanoid android and gave an overly respectful bow to their rescuers, "This is MT," he spoke through the speaker, gesturing to the both of them. "And I'm Chris," he gestured to the closed pilots seat doors, "My arm was shattered during the wreck and I lost a lot of blood, so I'm currently on some sort of life support I think. MT is keeping me alive until superior medical forces arrive."

-----------

Doctor Vanderbilt visibly relaxed when he heard that Hivemind had been talking to Lewis. "Did Lieutenant Walker mention anything about the captain? Or about an ensign?" He hesitated for a second before turning away towards the bridge, "I can go check for myself, you got 'em, Davistow." He turned and headed down the hall towards the bridge hatch at a fast jog.

-----------

Ulrich caught himself as the simulation froze, stopping before he hit the human his fist was currently on a collision course for. He straightened himself up and made his way back over to the HiveDroid, "Neither I nor Tatiana saw anything. I thought this was the surprise you were talking about. Now I know that was not the case." He looked up at the champions seated above them, meeting their disapproving stares with a raised eyebrow.

Jenny had known something was wrong from the off. Hive wasn't the cruel type, certainly not enough to pull this one off, and that was just about enough to keep her fingers off the trigger along with the feeling that had tried to seize her yesterday. She forced herself to concentrate and activated her comms - or thought she did - and asked the others to tell her what they were seeing. Only when Hive paused things did she realise her comm had stopped working. "I take it you didn't program the victim to look like Sevastopol after a weekend at Hell's Hilton?"

Corp had to admit that was the code and he put the gun away for now. He still looked on the healer with suspicion. "Big blades for a healer," he said, keeping his own up his sleeves as, behind him, Andy zipped around the other drone, curiosity getting the better of him. Doris stayed where she was.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"Ye'r a sight fer sore eyes, sure," Sarah said as the healer moved in. They'd already done the impossible, opening that door with some ease so she was prepared to accept them at their word. She let them work, wiping her stained hands then standing next to Cailean and putting an arm around his shoulders.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
"You c'n... you c'n tell that... bett'r'n me," keeva said, wondering where her head was going now. The hand lessened its' grip as confusion dawned and Keeva gestured to one of the four she'd saved. "Her, f'r example," she said, gesturing, half blinded, at a male crew member.

Traci came walking over from near the natural bridge, where she was going to get the jump on any droid that passed with her hammer or just punch if it was a human target. "So.. Does that mean we lost this round?" She asked, looking confused. "I didn't even get to hit anything.."

With that, she walked on ahead toward an entrance of the ship..

"Don't drop the field, Kobor's going to need a few minutes. the only reason he isn't attacking me is I'm not moving. I don't think I've ever seen him regress this far." she actually sounds scared of her own brother.

when the others started explainingwhat they saw, she chimed in as well. "It was a Ghrak, An enemy we've been at war with in one form or another for the entirety of our species history. The reptile didn't respond. Not out loud, anyway. Instead, he raised his staff. The carving at the top started to glow with a gentile yellow light. He brought the staff down hard, slamming it on the ground. Power coursed through the staff and pulsed down to the ground where it shot forward in a wave of light and strange glowing particles. As the wave of energy passed through him, Corp would feel pain he didn't even know he had leave him. Exposure to the wave reinforces the body, making it slightly stronger and more resilient in addition to instantly healing moderate wounds.

"Fades is part of our defensive force. He is normally a stealth combatant. He spent a period of time working on the healing arts of his world, and I needed more medics, so I brought him."

The two of them walked forward and to the bridge, followed by the other hive droid, the hulking medic, and a team of people in medical uniforms. Fades handed his blades to one of the hive droids while he, the other hive droid, and the group of medics entered the bridge.

"Lieutenant?" Hivemind said as they walked through. "It's me, Hivemind. I've brought some medics with me."

Oh. Thanks a lot. MT snarked in Chris's head over the "better more up-to-date version" line. Also, I think even if I could feel attracted to this robot... somehow that feels narcissistic.

"If MT is keeping you alive, then you should stay inside until the other MTs arrive." He said, referring to the medical technicians. Cyber walked past, keeping his eyes on MT as if either he knew something or he was having the same crisis. The dragon android continued on and started applying first aid to the mechanics where he could.

Hivemind was still. Various thoughts and emotions flooded his already crowded mind. He was dumbfounded and confused, as well as furious. Mostly confused though. He couldn't imagine why this had happened, or why it happened now. Odium wouldn't waste it's time interrupting a largely meaningless training match. "No. I didn't set the civilian to look like anything other than the default human model. He wasn't sure what she meant by that. "Regardless, this..." He pointed at Kobor as he struggled against Talya's grip. "...is unacceptable. This is exactly what we do need to train for. This is exactly what I was talking about. We won't last two minutes if all it takes to tear us apart is to expose us to things we hate. " At that moment, he may have gone a little hysterical. "It IS HATRED WE ARE FIGHTING! The MOMENT we confront this thing, it is going to try it's best to drive us apart. It's going to try to consume us. It could make every one of your teammates look like Ghrak. It could darken your thoughts until all you have is your furious hatred. What happens then? The only defense for this is to not have any hatred at all, or for you to have enough discipline to refuse to let it impact your actions."

Talya responds with a simple "so what's your plan then?" waiting a good minute for a response before continuing. "I'm serious. Undoing centuries of mental programming and hereditary memory isn't exactly going to be the easiest thing in the world, and trial and error probably won't do it."

>Mainly because if I know my brother, you'll have to force him through it. I might not have seen one of their incursions into civilized space, but he has. I doubt he'll be open to the idea of actually having to remember and think about what he had to do.
>The regression your seeing with kobor is deliberate. an exploitation of a flaw, one I believe you're already aware of, in our psychology; meant to keep us from having to think about what we're doing and who we're fighting around them.he doesn't have the luxury of rebinding mental functions that are inconvenient.
>And when I say what he had to do, I do mean had to. We tried peaceful contact when they found us again after the exodus war ended. for for each one who had forgotten or was willing to let go, there are ten that haven't. If you don't turn back the first wave by any means necessary more will come and you won't know who the dangerous ones are until entire worlds are on fire.
>They cant be trusted. any of them. Kerbos and Anjan are barren dead worlds, the civilizations they spawned, extinct, because we had to learn that lesson the hard way. It is not a mistake I or any other Kaal will repeat.

>so if you intend to try and deprogram him, you better have an actual plan. Because if you screw up and break him this ship will not be big enough to hide in.

As she finally left Doris and Andy alone, Epsilon stepped off to the side, not entirely sure what to do with herself, given she was currently in a part of the ship she wasn't supposed to be allowed anywhere near, and was finally able to relax enough to notice that she had been running around in her underwear the entire time.

Doctor Vanderbilt moved over to the Captain and quickly began assessing the situation of the rod having gone through her leg. "Lucky you, it's a clean shot. Straight in, straight out, no if ands or buts about it. Didn't impact any bones, however it did tear pretty much every muscle in there. Now, despite the fact that we do have an actual medical team on board instead of just yours truly, we still need to get that out. So," he pulled out a needle that was full of some sort of liquid and took the cap off of it. He gently stuck the needle in several places around the rod, numbing the area and temporarily clotting the blood around the rod. He wrapped a hand around the rod and looked at the Captain, "On 3. Ready? 1..." And out it came on 2. Captain Walker wouldn't feel much more than a bit of pressure and maybe a bit of odd tingling as the regrowth proteins took effect. Should she look, she would find that there wasn't actually much blood loss, in fact, it looked like the wound was already starting to heal, "Feel free to sit there and not move it so that the clotting process isn't interrupted or you could stand up. Give it a few minutes and you'll be able to put weight on it, though I would take it slowly because you have lost some blood and nobody needs you passing out. Make good judgements, please? Glad you understand." He stood up, his words becoming more and more hurried as he really wanted to move on to his next patient.
He turned about on the spot and almost immediately stopped. He adjusted the types of scans he eye was doing and let it run again only to come to the same conclusion. The doctor walked over crouched down close to Seena so that he could speak without being overheard too easily, "Did you know?"

------------

Probably because it looks so much like you. Did you see how they looked at you? I'm sure they're feeling the same way.

"Honestly I was thinking about hopping out and going for a stroll you know? Clear the head of bad thoughts and probably the remainder of my blood." It was a joke to lighten the mood, a little grim, but it was still a joke.

The reptilian immediately moved towards Captain Liz. Kneeling over her. Standing up, he picked up his staff, drawing a circle on the ground. The staff left a trail of a shining golden substance that glowed softly as a light glowing dust-like substance floated up from it. Gripping the staff with both hands, Fades closed his eyes, held the staff parallel to the ground, and thrust it into the air.

The interior of the circle burst softly with the same mystic light and dust the outside was made of. The substance pulsed upwards, covering the captain as her wounds started to glow. The captain's wounds closed the rest of the way, aided along by Vanderbilt's medicine.

Hivemind was something of a professional when it came to messing with the minds of intruders. In fact, he had several rooms in the outer fifty miles of the ship dedicated specifically to trolling intruders. For example: The next door the stowaway tries will lock him in a room designed to look like an airlock and start a countdown timer to it's depressurization. It wasn't real, but intruders usually didn't know that.

Hivemind sent Talya a video file. Inside it was a compilation of images and videos of the horrors that Odium inflicted. Horrors the Beacon, with all of it's might, couldn't stop. There were videos taken from the outside of the beacon of entire worlds being devoured by darkness and wicked fire before being crushed into oblivion by something colossal within the shadows. There were images of people driven to madness. They clawed and bit and attacked anyone who got close, their eyes burning with the demon's corruption. Next was a video of a massive army, taken from a late soldier's helmet camera. The army, full of the finest tanks and troops and aircraft faced down an unknown and unseen foe in the darkness before them, the only things visible being the abomination's great burning eyes. A burning hole opened in the darkness, black fangs silhouetted against the horrible glow from within. The audio glitched, unable to convey the totality of the ungodly shriek the monster emitted. The video burst into static. When it came back, the entire army was dead. Countless glowing figures were being dragged on dark, spectral chains to the gaping maw.
The video ended.

>That is what awaits us. That is the threat we face, born of the darkness in our minds. That is why, successful or not, we have to try.

Most important thing I've learned from D&D?
No matter how tempting it may be, as a DM I can't both present a problem and solve it.
Every time a DMPC or NPC fixes something a payer couldn't i'm diminishing and undermining that player's contribution.

Hivemind watched and waited for Kobor to calm down. Once it seemed he had his judgment and awareness back, Hivemind addressed both twins. "Both of you, follow me. We need to talk." He led them toward the exit. Before leading them out, however, Hivemind turned and spoke to the rest of the people. "Everyone else, get into position. The training simulation will resume once you are ready." With that, he left the room, indicating the twins should follow.

Many hive droids passed Jolty in the hallway. It makes sense, he owns the tower as well as the ship. However, true to his word, none of them addressed the cat, instead giving him the space he needed.

Seena looked up into her boyfriend's eyes and wondered what he was talking about. "If... if you mean the broken leg then, um, kinda," she said, taking quick breaths. "I was there at the time."

Colorado grinned, "That would make sense. I should probably get this fixed up before I get too into it," he spoke mostly to himself, thinking best on how to say things. The doctor withdrew a longer and slimmer needle than the one he had used on the captain and with the aid of the X-ray function of his eye, guided it carefully towards the bone. Luckily for Seena, it wasn't a true compound fracture, just a single break and a few hairline fractures. After a few sticks, he withdrew the needle for the last time and stowed it away in his bag for proper disposal. He sat back on the floor across from Seena, leaning on another one of the consoles, "Right so, uh- wow it's usually easier to give news to people than this. Okay, here we go." He took a breath and steadied himself, trying to keep his tail from wagging any harder than it already was, "Do you remember that night a few days ago? Well, surprise. We're, uh, about to be parents."

Seena blinked. They'd been in the relationship barely a week and he'd been reluctant even though she'd told him she seemed to be coming into season and had to try...... "They... they can tell at this... this early? I know saying going into season meant I had a obligation to try and.." She fell silent as the world fell away for a moment, leaving her on a piece of decking that floated amidst the stars. The words finally, really, hit and she did her best to survive the impact. After a few seconds she pulled herself up to Colorado and, wordlessly, kissed him.

Traci watched Hive and the twins leave, hoping they'd be ok. Except for the outburst, they seemed.. Interesting to her. Once they were out of eyesight, she looked over the others. Hm, they look angry.. The others look more approachable, I'll go talk to them. She thought, starting to wander over to Ulrich. "Hey, now that we know what we're facing, got any plans? Teamwork might be a good option here." She asked gernerally, waving a free arm.

Some have compound fractures. The worst injury there sounds like he's being kept alive by a combat mech's life support system. Follow me." With that, hivemind led them into the ship and toward the maintenance bay.
Rika looked around carefully as they walked, making sure not to trip or step on any debris. "I'm no mechanic, but this ship is going to need extensive repairs.. If it can even be repaired with this much damage.." She said idly, noting a quite large crack in a bulkhead they passed.

Once they reached the maintenance bay, Rika pulled off her backpack and pulled out a pod. When she looked up, she gasped. The 'combat mech' Hive mentioned was a large mechanical dragon!? Rika blinked and coughed before returning to her more professional demeanor. "Alright.." She said under her breath as she stepped forward into it's veiw. "Hello! I'm Dr. Montoni with the Beacon of Hope. I'm here to help. Could you tell me your name and injuries please?" She asked clearly as she put on some latex gloves.

Ulrich nodded, "Honestly since some of our heavy lifting is gone I was going to target their back line and act more as a disruptor. You know, flipping vehicles, taking out some of the larger mobile opponents. Plus some mobility if someone needs to move across the field without climbing over everything." He extended a hand towards the newcomer, "I do not think we have met before. My name is Ulrich, it is a pleasure to meet you."

-------------

Chris gave Dr. Montoni a wave, "My name is Chris Saka. I'm pretty sure my right arm is crushed. MT's life support has stopped most of the life threatening bleeding though, including using some sort of artificial blood as a replacement."

--------------

"Well it's really early and I can't tell the species or gender of it but it's definitely there. I know it's possible and it happened with some friends of mine, but- Mmnf!" His ramblings were swiftly cut short with a kiss and a passionate embrace that he returned tenfold. The stress and fear of the situation melted away and any trace of doubt he had had gone with it. He pulled her into him and decided that he was never going to let go.

Corp let them have a moment whilst he operated controls. "You have other patients, Dad," he told Colorado, without even looking around. "And I can't fully disengage the engines from here. Lewis. Any luck in contacting Engineering?"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jaken stopped next to a buckled door as they passed and sniffed. "I can smell bleeding," he said. "Fresh blood behind here." He tried to move the door. It refused to budge. "I'll try this." He knew what he was trying was a little dangerous, putting a portal into an area he couldn't see and had never been but it seemed the only thing to try and he aimed a little off the floor and focused hard on distance.

The door crackled into existence in the dark interior and it lit up with the incoming light from Jaken's side. He could see a Canine under the collapsed shelves, out cold from the fall and with his legs cut in numerous shallow lines by the shelf edges. The cub hopped through and began pulling the victim out to where he could get help.

The hive droid let out a short laughing sound. He knew sign language, and so got the full blast of what Conall actually said. He signed back at the canine. "The best and shortest explanation is magic. People from her planet have a weird kind of energy they use to influence the world around them. I've learned not to question these things."

However, there is one near the training room past the armory in champion tower if you wanted to try it out."

As Kolt transferred control to Quint again and started preparing for the reset training simulation, he made a note to talk to the two Kaal about what just happened later. Some of what Talya said implied that Kobor went berserk because of something in his genetics, which in turn implied that June might have it too, and while he wasn’t going to let June go into battle even if his life depended on it, he still wanted to know if his daughter was at risk of turning into a raging murder beast if a relatively competent Master got their hands on her.

—MEANWHILE—

Liz groaned as the concussion seemed to melt away, and the flesh in her leg reknit itself back into shape. She pulled herself into a standing position before answering Hivemind’s question. ”Sort of. I was out of it for a few minutes, but I did manage to understand some of what was said. Apparently we’re in another dimension? That would explain how you have the technology to heal my concussion so quickly.”
”That wasn't technology. That was magic.” Lewis said, the incredulity in his face drawing the attention of Hivemind and his mother. ”Look, I can get that different universes would have different laws of physics, but magic takes that a bit too far. What’s next, you’re going to tell us that that.... void we went through could’ve given us superpowers?”

"Here, let me get him.." She took the dog's legs and helped Jaken move him into a clear spot of the floor. "Right, I got it from here.."

First, she checked his pulse and breathing. "Breathing ok, pulse is low.." She thought aloud, checking them for any injuries. "Multiple cuts across the body, mostly shallow.. Dislocated left foot.. Possible fracture in left leg.." She continued, checking everything a second time before starting on treatment. First, the leg. She carefully raised the leg with one hand and held the foot in the other. After a few seconds counting in her head, she suddenly twisted the foot back to the correct angle with a soft pop. After that, she took a small syringe from the pod under her arm and injected it into one of the canine's shoulders. "Okay, he's stable for now..[/size]" She said simply, checking the pulse one last time before standing and removing her gloves.

She then wandered back over to MT and Chris, putting on new gloves from her pocket as she did. "Okay, as I was saying, could you please kneel down here and open your cockpit so I can look over Mr. Saka.." She said calmly, looking over the mech for said cockpit.

She then wandered back over to MT and Chris, putting on new gloves from her pocket as she did. "Okay, as I was saying, could you please kneel down here and open your cockpit so I can look over Mr. Saka.." She said calmly, looking over the mech for said cockpit.
That also never get's old. MT said in Chris's mind with a mental smirk when Rika jumped in surprise.

When she got back from treating the canine, the armor on MT's chest slid apart and the cockpit doors behind them opened outwards. Inside, Chris sat in an old yet well preserved chair. He was still paralyzed by the helmet, and as long as his mind was still in MT's head, he would be non-responsive. A kind of syringe-like device stuck into his arm, providing him with the mentioned artificial blood. Though MT was unable to set the broken bone, straps held the arm tightly in place to keep it from being damaged further. The straps unlocked to let the doctor have access to the break.

Security restraints unlocked. Disabling primary motor functions to prevent injury. With that, the mech became immobile except for the head, which could still look around.

Jolty sighs again. He was going to regret this. "Look....Hivemind....I'll...I'll join your champions, alright? I just need a little help with my issue, that's all..."
As I gaze upon the stars, I realize how much I will miss this world.

Rika stepped toward the open cockpit whilst rumaging through her backpack for the right pod. "Thank you. Now, let's see.." She carefully cleaned the blood away with a cloth swab then looked over the arm. "Multiple breaks and fractures, highly likely it's fragmented.." She murmured, feeling the bones easily through the skin. "Yep.. You're lucky, Mr. Saka, that medicine has come as far as it has. Back in the 21st century, you'd of lost this arm.." She said calmly as she retreived a folded brace from the pod and started to fasten it around the arm. "Although, if this was any more damaged, I might've had to do the same.." Once the brace was fastened tight, she rummaged through the pod again for a syringe much like the one she used for the canine, but the needle was longer. She then started seemingly haphazardly jabbing the arm with it, pushing the liquid inside at increments until it was empty. After that, she took out a small spritzer bottle and sprayed the arm with it lightly. "There we go.. Now once you're back in your own body, your arm's going to be quite sore. I have a pill that must be taken orally for that.." She says calmly, stepping back. "Other than that, you'll be able to use that arm about.." She looked at the watch on her wrist. "..Now, once the brace is off."

"Nay," Sarah replied, taking a look at Cailean's eye as she helped him apply the salve, "I got lucky. How're ye feelin'?"

"Magic and super-powers," Corp grumbled. "as if we didn't have enough to worry about. And the maintenance deck isn't Engineering. I'll need to go check on things down there. Make sure the engines are fully disengaged and all that. If I can get there. With your permission, Captain?"

Jenny got ready for the next round, wondering why Sevstopol had seemed so scared of her.

Jaken watched Rika work with utter fascination, almost getting his muzzle in the way as she worked. Behind them, Keeva took a seat and sagged a little. Her thoughts began to turn to Dan and his whereabouts.
