Dumbest thing you believed as a kid?

Post by CanzetYote »

When I was little, I got stung by a bee and developed a phobia of bees as well as a temporary phobia of flowers. I was even afraid of fake and plastic flowers because I thought they would attract bees to sting me.

I believed that, somehow, animals talked. I had it on good authority, too. "All animals speak English. They just have very limited vocabularies and really thick accents." Or so a farmer who lived near us told me. My mother, Irish and Quaker, absolutely rejected Santa Claus but she told me that animals talked on Christmas midnight. Regards.

That belief was the basis of a Christmas movie. That was an interesting belief.

Actually, the movie was probably based on the folklore. At any rate, my mother's tales - which were shared by some of the other neighbors with a bit o'the Barney in their bloodstream - shared these stories. It's a mix of Celtic lore, folk Christianity that's not entirely orthodox, and parental tradition, I figure. I vaguely remember a number of those seasonal cartoons - some very sweet, others...um.....not so much. Regards.

I used to eat drywall because I saw beavers do it. So I thought Wood would be good food.

I got one for you right here. I used to believe that anything on the television (including cartoons) could see us but couldn't interact with us.

I used to think beer was milk/juice specifically for my dad. And would bring them to him if we went out.

How about this gem? I believed that the vacuum cleaner was an indoor lawn mower and we trimmed it by vacuuming it.

That's pretty silly ~

I don't think I have many more dumb beliefs, just dumb things I used to do.

When I was a kid I used to go out of my way to stare at the sun. I would do it fairly often and try to break my records.

After watching an episode of "Tiny Toon Adventures", I flushed most of my mother's jewelry down the toilet since I wanted to see "the water go down the hole".

I did that a few times too. My elementary school made us wait outside until the day started. On foggy and cloudy mornings the sun was dim enough to look for at a short time. I was more curious than anything, since under only those conditions I could see the physical disk of the sun. I thought it was cool, maybe that's where I got my interest in astronomy

There is a moth caterpillar called a "woolly bear". They start to appear in July and don't go into hibernation until late in the fall. Predictably from the name, they're hairy little insects, covered in black fur with an orange stripe around the middle.

The orange stripe is often called the caterpillar's "sweater" and size of the sweater stripe is supposed to foretell the length and intensity of the winter. The more body area covered by the orange band, the longer and harder the winter. Or so we believed.

For them as cares, "sweaters" are predicting a moderate winter this fashion year...... ;)

I used to believe that if I didn't wear gloves while sleeping, the BoogeyMan would grab me and force feed (drink?) me expired milk.
Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.” But [The LORD] said, “Yes, you did laugh.” - Genesis 18:15 (NIV).

Being a kid in the 50s, the first TV generation, commercials stirred a lot of debate among us. Could eating a certain breakfast cereal make you more athletic, for example? Could wearing a certain brand of footwear (say, Keds) give you the power to run really, really faster? Put another way, could you buy "magic"?

I knew a couple of kids who got sick taking a big does of vitamins following the logic that if one vitamin was good for you, imagine the powers you could unleash taking twenty of them?! Unleashed was a pretty good characterization of the effect that experiment had on them.

Isn’t that potentially dangerous, too?

Yes, it can be. As Art Linkletter used to say, " Kids do the darnedest things." And the dumbest.

Anything can be dangerous if you take too much of it. Even water.
