Do you collect anything?

I tell ya what, I don't enjoy Mountain Dew White Out. It tastes fine but I mean, really Mountain Dew, come out and admit it's just lemonade already.

With that said, it's the worst lemonade I can think of, not counting diet.

... But I collect the cans, not the drinks!

WhiteOut tastes exactly like you'd expect something called WhiteOut to taste like. *shivers* Most Mountain Dew flavors are pretty awful. They just got lucky with a few, like Code Red, LiveWire and Supernova.

Some of the cans my dad collected still had beer in them. Though typically they were drained out a hole in the bottom so the tab didn't have to be removed. Or the bottle cap in the case of the really old beer cans.

I can't say I really collect anything, but I'm a book away from owning all of Calvin and Hobbes. But that's three books, so I don't think it's really fair to call it a collection. *shrug*

Funny thing

I guess there aren't a lot of tape collectors around. It'll probably be a few years before we can start romanticizing cassettes through nostalgia.

I collect and rebuild/restore bicycles, and then ride them. I'm a century nut, and i love showing up to an event on something nobody expected. I run a student bike shop at U of M and teach other mechanics too.
I also collect firearms, but i think everyone around here does that haha

Erm, mostly from my brother's money, but my Mom looks online for anything within our budget, and we also go to the Flea Market twice weekly. There is also a PawnShop which often gets old games, selling them to us for $2 or less, regardless of what they are. There are quite a few more boxes and stuff that the shelf can not fit on top, and some games that have not been cleaned or input in Excel yet. But this is the main bulk of it, my brother wants to call it his collection since it is mostly his money, but it is mostly a family effort. ^^

I am absolutely in awe.

So I'm thinking of starting up coin collecting. A while back my grandmother gave me a beautiful set of Canadian silver minted for the Winter Olympics and I really like stuff like that. Now if only it weren't so expensive...

It's like Gamestop combined with this store near me called Cool Stuff. (They have a good sized collection of really old games and systems, but needs more stock)

Yes, among the things not shown in the picture are the hand held games, as they do not go well with shelves. We do have those in drawers though.
My main problem with the Sega GameGear is that its screen is impossible to see into when it is sunny, so it is mostly an indoor console.

Just find something you enjoy, and you can collect on em. The whole fun in collecting is seeing the collection grow, if you collect bottle caps, you will feel very joyed every time you find a new addition to your collection that you did not have before. The only thing to worry about in collecting is the expense.

It is not hoarding if there is a theme to the whole thing. Our theme is games obviously while Sleet's theme is coins. As long as you have a theme, no problem. :3

Edit: Actually I am quite sure collecting is just the hoarding of a certain object. Still not a bad thing.

I wouldn't know. I never played it outside before it broke. My brother has played it in a car before, though.

Yea, it is in there, one of the boxed ones. I dare not play it, but I watched a talk-through recently of the entire game. I would feel bad if I played so I rather watch the professionals.

I'm pretty sure I've got my brother's old copy somewhere under my bed. I don't remember anything about it though. the only Genesis games I kind of remember are Mortal Kombat 3 and the old Madden game.
I also see no Sega Pico. not that surprising considering it was a system designed for kids, but I fully remember the games I played on that system.

I like to call it my collection because I fund the 'vast' majority of it.
When you put so much time and money into something, you like to take ownership of it.
But I won't deny, this is absolutely a family effort. We are all a bunch of crazy people.

My father collects Pinball Machines, Slot Machines, Gas Pumps, Cars, and various other antiques.
My mother collects records and movies.
My sister collects books and printed articles.
Flint collects animal figurines, stuffed animals, and cards.

We all go out searching for games, but we keep an eye out for our own interests as well.
I pay for all the games, so I decide which ones we buy and what prices we ask for.

The part of the collection where I don't claim total ownership is the new games.
Both Flint & I buy new games (last 2 shelves), so I can't claim to own the 'entire' collection.
But since I have a job, I find that I end up paying for most of those as well.

Flint has all the time in the world to play them while I'm stuck working

I really should take a picture of my Small Forest Animal figurine collection. :3 It is not big, but it does not look bad at all to me.

And just so I can make a joke, I guess I want to say that Esquire Fox ordered this monstrosity in hopefully working condition to replace our other defective copy.

Actually the difference is collecting does not interfere with your normal life and hording does. You can still be a hoarder and only collect one thing. Also collecting usually indicates that you take care of the thing your collecting, hoarders do not.

Used to collect cards. (I still have them but nowadays I don't add to the collection)

These days I collect pokemon merchandise, mainly figurines. My sister collects anything got to do with Tigger. I don't know what my brother collects however I'm probably closer to a hoarder than a collector since I've never really taken good care of what I collect.

If it helps, we keep everything very organized and often sell spare copies and doubles.
I keep a mental list of valuable games and systems and buy them when I can get them for cheap.
Reselling allows me to defray the cost of collection somewhat.

A good example of hoarding can be found in the show 'American Pickers'.
They visit people who keep barns full of old junk. Anything from food cans to automobiles.
There is no rhyme or reason to the collection. No organization or association of value.

It remains to be seen if retro-games will be a good investment 10 or 20 years from now.

you guys should try to get a Sega Pico. It was made for kids, so a lot of people don't even know it exists. If it's fairly unknown, then if you had one it would probably be somewhat valuable. Plus, it would fit the collection.

Truth be told, I didn't know it existed until you mentioned it.
I'll keep an eyes out for that system. Maybe one of the locals will post an ad.

Sega's first console was the SG-1000. But it was only released in Japan and Australia.
Before that, they just made arcade games, and ports for Atari and Coleco.

The games them selves won't be most likely (other then very very rare ones that never got a port to another system, or sold very little) but the consoles in working order might be worth something, but even then I wouldn't expect them to fetch more then a few hundred to maybe a thousand-ish dollars at most.

It depends honestly. If a game is never offered for sale again, or only available in a buggy format for free, some games will retain value, but really the days of being able to set aside releases you find in a game store are over. Even small publishers if a game sells out will offer a few re-releases via reprint runs because they know that they aren't making any extra when a game's value shoots up via reprints.

And before this gen with PSN, XLBA and VC, the only really hard to find games were games that hadn't had proper re-releases. (See Squaresoft's 16-bit catalog), Now with developers looking to get every bit of money they can from a game, you can count on just about anything that's not stuck in copyright hell and fiscally viable to be re-released by someone at some point. Backwards Compatibility and region locks (Or lack of) can also affect a game's value as well as if it's still supported (Like Demon Souls, expect value for that to drop when the servers are finally shut down in a year or so)
