Housepets!

Before it was free to do a video chat with up to 10 people on Skype, it was free to do so for at least several months on Google +. Probably a lot longer than that.

Something tells me it was more of a move that Microsoft made to make sure they didn't lose regular customers who would still end up paying for other services (Not to mention even if you don't use the paid features, they advertise on it and therefor still make money from you using them).


Honestly, I'm not that big of a fan of Skype. I REALLY hated the way it worked on Windows. It's actually pretty different on Ubuntu, and I don't really dislike the setup now (If I had to be honest, I actually like the setup than Google +), but I'd still rather use something like Google +. Of course, I use a lot of Google services so I have good reason to like their social network.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the Skype-bashing thread. You can chat with a group of any size by typing the "/golive" command. :3

Is there someway to run a text based chat over Skype, sort of like an IRC channel?

Absolutely. Skype isn't just for video calls any more.
The big Housepets! Skype chat that everyone is talking about here is text-based.
In fact, most of what happens on Skype, at least for me, is text-based these days.
I don't know who was in the old IRC place but there are now 42 people in the Housepets! Skype chat so it's almost always active.

The IRC hasn't been active in years. Some of the folks who were active IRC users have been in the Skype group, but not many are still around.

My Skype mobile app (android, latest version) seems to update in batches, and does so every 2-12 hours. If anyone has a solution for this please don't hesitate to suggest it!

Cyan, I really don't know, mine doesn't seem to do that. I'd recommend the generic uninstall - reinstall thing and if that doesn't work try it again turning the phone off and back on in between the install and reinstall. I really don't know what to tell you otherwise.

If you regret it that much you can always create a new account and merge your contacts over. I created a new account for forum stuff, just so I didn't have to let everyone know my real name. It's as simple as creating a new email address.

Yes, there was something going on earlier. They've fixed it by now, though.

http://heartbeat.skype.com is where they announce if any major problems are happening.

Just so you guys know, due to a couple of issues with spammers the chat has been set so that one of the mods from the chat has to add you. So if you're wanting to join and the link doesn't work then you're definitely still more than welcome to join! All you have to do is send myself, Diss, Arcwolf or Sleet a message and let us know your Skype name and we'll add you!

Yes, as has been said, skype experienced some pretty major issues last night. It's been restored to full function though!

As has been said before I will only accept a request if you mention housepets and I will block you if you are spamming me.
I won't participate in a call and will only communicate through text. I am on frequently throughout the day but don't expect to be on at the same time as me becasue I live in Australia and we're (at the moment) about 9-10 hours behind America.

Wow, I had no idea we had a topic like this.

I have two accounts. ShadowLightning is the first one I ever made. It's also the one that's part of the HP! group chats. The second account, skypeshadowlightning, is the one I'm a little more active on since it's the one that's on my phone.

Yup, all text based. Way too many people coming and going to hold actual calls.

Just thought I'd post a reminder here since we've had quite a few new people join the forums.

We have a semi-official Housepets skype chat group run by Diss and all are welcome to join. It's entirely text-based so you don't have to worry about being seen on camera or anything scary like that, and it's filled with Housepets forum users discussing every topic under the sun and having fun hanging out together.

Normal Housepets forum rules apply to the chat.
