Personally, I'd say a vegetable would win because without them most animals on Earth would either have consumed us before we had the chance to evolve or died out. Though being more about animals, it seems that felines and canines are the most popular, with most others being covered in some sort of fur and classified as 'cute' by the general human population.

Altogether it seems any animal that isn't seen as cute or cuddly isn't much loved or even protected when its near extinction, purely based on their appearance. Many insects have died out, causing many other species to struggle making human aid more necessary until they adapt or become completely dependent on humanities intervention.

If I were to express my opinion I'd say that the animal that has proven most useful to the human population would deserve to be seen as 'the best' and from what I can tell that would be the bovine or more commonly known as a cow. They provide us with physical materials such as milk, leather, and meat, with their bodies waste being so large in amount that it can fertilizer extremely large fields with it even with a small herd.
