My first language is English, I can speak German fairly well, I know a little Japanese, and a very small bit of Spanish and French.

And thanks to the fact that I haven't written anything in Chinese for 7 years, now I forget how to write most of the Chinese characters (I can only write simple stuff like "I", "You", or "Good" now)... I can still speak, read, and type though.

If my French teacher is correct on this (and please correct me if I'm wrong) : Spanish is more practical for living in America and Mexico. But go over to Europe, and French is a much better common ground.

This is true. In Europe, the pattern tends to be that people will know their mother tongue, and if a second language, it'll be English, and if a third, it'll be French.

I had a funny story my German teacher told me where he was talking to another foreigner in German. At the time he wasn't very good at German, and it turned out neither was the other person. So he asked "can we switch to French?" and the other person obliged. After a while suddenly the other person asks "Are you American?" and when my teacher said "Yes, why?" the other guy said in English "Because I'm English."

I said useful, not spoken by the most people. Mandarin Chinese actually has more speakers than even English. But most of the people who speak it aren't worth speaking to unless you live in or are visiting China (and I don't mean that in an insulting way). Whereas English and Spanish are important if you're going to travel to one of many countries in the world, English being the main language in several of the most culturally influential countries.

If you mean native speakers, you'd be right. I would however contest that overall, English is in far higher use worldwide, even considering the billion-breaking nation. Though that probably can't be easily researched.

I would say that what the 'most useful' language would be depends on what you're going to be using it for. I mean, if it's important for you to be involved with the international powers and all that you'd want to know Mandarin or Hindustani, you know what I mean? Spanish and French, mind you, are both official languages of the UN and Spanish has more native speakers than English.

Well that's definitely a benefit to knowing Italian if you're into that. :3

But remember that Spanish being more common means Spanish is more useful. If you're just learning for fun, though, I wouldn't worry about it. Actually, you could probably learn them together if you wanted. They're very similar languages.

My dad speaks Chinese. He worked in Taiwan for a while, as a bus driver. Then when he came back to the USA (California), he drove buses as a tour guide for the Chinese tourists. He learned the language from his passengers, basically. And years later when I was born, he taught me. I can speak a little of it, not read it.

Always fun to go into a Chinese restaraunt with him. You get treated with so much respect when you greet them in Chinese and say that you're hungry (in their language, of course). X3

Well, my story: my best friend and I are really into the anime and manga stuff. About two summers ago, we used online translators and such to teach ourselves how to speak Japanese. Actually, both her and my family went out to eat together one time, and we needed to talk about something personal, so we switched from English to Japanese. Our parents turned around and gave us the "o_O What the freak are you talking about???" look. It was great! :lol:

Sadly, in two year's time, I've forgotten half the stuff I used to know. ^^;;

I like languages too, but my repertoire doesn't really reflect that. I have the typical "boring American" credentials: I speak English and I took Spanish in grade school.

But I pick up what I can in whatever language, though I still can't really hold even a basic conversation in anything but English and Spanish.

A language I think would be cool to know but not worth it to actually learn is Welsh. I think it's such a cool-looking language that would be sweet to be able to write in. As of right now I only know one word: llwynog.

Welsh would be cool, I agree. Personally I've always wanted to learn Arabic and Korean.

I actually attempted to learn Japanese from Internet, but I gave up because it simply eats too much time.
