My first language is English, I can speak German fairly well, I know a little Japanese, and a very small bit of Spanish and French.

Hi thrasherblades! There are many Taiwanese here, aren't there?thrasherblades wrote:And hey Aquablast, didn't know you were Taiwanese! Ni Hao! ^^
Wow, so did you find Ebly?Agent Sandwich wrote:I'm also Taiwanese but I immigrated to Australia to search for Ebly! That's Internet! Now if I want to go somewhere I can simply ask this forum!Sleet wrote:Also, I'm surprised; we're a lot more multicultural than I thought we were. Gotta love the wide demographic here.
To be fair, I can only read a little Japanese... And mostly only Kanji too.Teh Brawler wrote:I keep wondering why there are so many Japanese speakers on here.

This is true. In Europe, the pattern tends to be that people will know their mother tongue, and if a second language, it'll be English, and if a third, it'll be French.Beagle wrote: If my French teacher is correct on this (and please correct me if I'm wrong) : Spanish is more practical for living in America and Mexico. But go over to Europe, and French is a much better common ground.
If you mean native speakers, you'd be right. I would however contest that overall, English is in far higher use worldwide, even considering the billion-breaking nation. Though that probably can't be easily researched.Sleet wrote:I said useful, not spoken by the most people. Mandarin Chinese actually has more speakers than even English. But most of the people who speak it aren't worth speaking to unless you live in or are visiting China (and I don't mean that in an insulting way). Whereas English and Spanish are important if you're going to travel to one of many countries in the world, English being the main language in several of the most culturally influential countries.
Yeah of course, if you ever come across germany, be my guest^^Sleet wrote:

Taken in context, did you just meow?Ebly wrote:either way i still like japanese better. nyah.
Ebly can answer that for you. I fulfilled his fantasy by biting him and turning him into a vampire on a full moon night. However he sometimes morphs into a dingo when there is a lunar eclipse >.< Got a crush *cough* *cough*Aquablast wrote:Hi thrasherblades! And thanks to the fact that I haven't written anything in Chinese for 7 years, now I forget how to write most of the Chinese characters (I can only write simple stuff like "I", "You", or "Good" now)... I can still speak, read, and type though.

With unconventional transliteration?
Well that's definitely a benefit to knowing Italian if you're into that. :3Private Elliot wrote:I may take a Rosetta Stone course on Spanish or Italian.
Spanish is common though... so many Italian 'cause its less common for First lanauage English speakers like me to speak.
And so i can read Val's fics better.
My dad speaks Chinese. He worked in Taiwan for a while, as a bus driver. Then when he came back to the USA (California), he drove buses as a tour guide for the Chinese tourists. He learned the language from his passengers, basically. And years later when I was born, he taught me. I can speak a little of it, not read it.Jack wrote:im surprised at the amount of people here who can read (and talk) Chinese. who of you learned it? cos i heard that its a really hard language.
also, English is my second and Hebrew is my first... all by my self...
im planing on learning Italian, Spanish and Yiddish.
Well, my story: my best friend and I are really into the anime and manga stuff. About two summers ago, we used online translators and such to teach ourselves how to speak Japanese. Actually, both her and my family went out to eat together one time, and we needed to talk about something personal, so we switched from English to Japanese. Our parents turned around and gave us the "o_O What the freak are you talking about???" look. It was great!Alex wrote:Why are there so many people who speak Japanese here?

I like languages too, but my repertoire doesn't really reflect that. I have the typical "boring American" credentials: I speak English and I took Spanish in grade school.DigiManiac wrote:Thanks, I do my best Been a language nut since I was 12 or so.Sleet wrote:Wow, that's pretty impressive!

But I pick up what I can in whatever language, though I still can't really hold even a basic conversation in anything but English and Spanish.
A language I think would be cool to know but not worth it to actually learn is Welsh. I think it's such a cool-looking language that would be sweet to be able to write in. As of right now I only know one word: llwynog.

Yaay, I don't have to feel ever so lonely! (Originating from Göteborg, livin' close to Jönköping now, in Hjo.)
Probably not, but I like that thought so lets go with that shall weSleet wrote:Is Housepets! to Sweden as David Hasselhoff is to Germany or something?
Well, I guess I cheated by having Chinese as my native language... XDJack wrote:im surprised at the amount of people here who can read (and talk) Chinese. who of you learned it? cos i heard that its a really hard language.
Wow, you learned to speak a language from online translators? That's crazy (in a good way)!Beagle wrote:Well, my story: my best friend and I are really into the anime and manga stuff. Sadly, in two year's time, I've forgotten half the stuff I used to know. ^^;;
