Wow! I've always wanted to sail a catamaran or trimaran! is there much of a difference between a tri/catamaran and a keel boat? (In terms of operating)

In terms of actual operation there is really no difference, but there are some key factors that make it very different in general:

-The boat hardly heels because of the weight distribution across the sides
-Since the heel is less dramatic, Trimarans use larger sails than would be deemed safe on a monohull of the same length.
-Trimarans can get up on plane :o (around 11 knots)
-There is MUCH more space to operate the boat
-In races you can have more crew to hike out on the hulls to go faster
-Just like hobies you can use a trapese!
-The daggerboard and rudder fold in (drags less than a foot when pulled in)
- as long as you pull out the speedo before you do it, beaching it is no problem (and its so much fun!)
-These guys are FAST. Last year on the 4th of july we reached 24.7 knots coming into Red Brook harbor (buzzards bay, massachusetts)

I could probably go on forever

Nice to see some sailors around here. I'm a RYA youth level 4 and I don't own my own boat (Yet!) but I sail through a club and usually use a topper Buzz dingy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buzz_%28dinghy%29
Also, where are you guys all based?
I sail the river Tay at Dundee in scotland and I'd love to hear where we all sail.
May you lead an interesting life.

As with EvilTwin I am RYA level 4, and in the Royal Tay Yacht Club in Dundee, Sailing mainly Buzzes at the moment.
I have experience in (in rough chronological order), Mirrors, Toppers, Fevas, Kestrels, lasers (my favourite single hander), Buzzes, dart 15 and laser 2000.
I recently done some racing for the first time, crewing for some folks at a recent club regatta.

I'm in Beijing so there is no sea. If I were to go sailing I would need to go to Qinhuangdao which is 2 hours by train or 4 hours by bus. So far I've only gone once a year for an entire week but when I get my Level 4 I'll go more often.

You know, I'm poor. xD I'd love to sail or whatever, but there is no money to invest in such an endeavor.

I almost joined the Navy to pay for college, though. Does that count?

Sailing is one of the things i want to do most if i go to a university that offers that such as stanford. It just looks so fun, and the responsibility needed looks like a challenge, something i like.

I'd always recommend trying it. I tried it the first time and it got me hooked ever since.
Although I will admit that it's not cheap, most clubs and universities have boats for use of members and there is a lot of good quality gear at decent prices on-line and so on.
May you lead an interesting life.

Having just returned from a rather hilarious but quite rough evening on the water I thought I'd inquire about that favorite dinghy sailors subject, capsising records!
My personal best/worst stands at a dozen over a whole day of gusting force five winds across the tide. Any improvements on my record? Or particularly impressive/ scary examples?

In my own defense it was really rough, That day the advanced group in the junior section of the club were the only ones allowed out. the most I had recently was five in two hours, trying to fly a spinnaker in waves. Very wet indeed but the speed was incredible, we out paced a powerboat at one point!
May you lead an interesting life.

My favourite single example was a deathroll in a Buzz. (it appears that "deathroll traditionally describes violent rolling from side to side, whereas my club's definition is a combination of a pichpole and a capsize.)

I would like to share a fail I experienced whilst sailing. I didn't sail for an entire year and I was directly switching from a Topaz Uno to a Topaz Omega (a bigger keel boat). Since the sails were bigger, my instructor and shipmate also had to sit on the windward side to prevent the boat from capsizing (there was also winds up to level 3~4 which isn't a great thing for an Omega). The instructor wanted me to gybe and I lost balance switching sides. What did I grab in response? The halyard! The sail couldn't swing out and we capsized.

FAIL

YES!!! Someone that speaks my languade!!! My Da used to have a "Scarab" (cigarette boat) that he bought from "Pier 57" the racing boat team! Our speed boat had TWO ENGINES!!! And could easily push 80 mph!!! We went to Lake Michigan a lot.

Here is a link to what I could find about them on my cell phone.

http://jrsperos.com/17.html

P.S. Will get picture of it up soon.

P.S.S. We sold it, I think 3-5 years ago to people that live 5 minutes away!

Nothing is more fun, then being in a cigarette boat going 80 mph or over, racing other boats and a helicopter flying around you taking pictures and filming you!

But we did not buy the pictures or film recording, because they tried to sell it all for over $700!!! But we won the race!!!

Now that was an AWESOME DAY!!!!!

Don't let that dream die out! You can start sailing at 8 (the age limit at my sailing club/school). But it may vary from country to country.

I sailed a longer than usual cruise today, we usually stay in and around the shallow bay the club is set in, but went way farther out today, stopped at a beach on the other side of the river, sailed back and got mildly ran over when landing.
spent the same amount of time as usual sailing, but covering a big distance is satisfying.

I was in the worst collision of my sailing career last night. I was crewing for my friend on his new dart 15 catamaran, which he has owned for a month and already made two insurance claim worthy breakages on, when we went into the side of a slow moving and comparatively soundly built laser, resulting in a six inch split right through the point of the left hull. not an easy repair, and the boat is totally out of commission until it is fixed.
