Post Re: Discussion: Video Games
I like Gears of War. Mainly because Epic games constantly adds something new to the series. Gears of War 1 did well, with a decent story and some interesting mechanics. Gears of War 2 added to that with more "useful" guns and several new ways to fight and bring pain. AKA they added the ability to crawl, which became a blessing during campaign and online gaming when you need to get to and ally who refuses to move from behind his block. There was also the human shield ability, which has been ripped off by twenty other games this year alone. But what really makes me happy is Gears of Wars Horde mode, where you fight waves of ever expanding baddies and work together with friends in a way never thought possible.

But pretty soon the rip offs came running in. Halo is the main offender of this, claiming that they had the idea first and that EPIC was able to slap dash it into their game faster. Sadly that is almost impossible to believe considering how poorly Halo handles its Firefight mode. I would be lying if I said I didn't get bored after the first hundred infinite respawns... Oh, and the reverse horde thing is terrible. It's like Bungie decided to take to tack it on after learning about Gears of Wars new Beast mode. Oh wait, they DID! H***, they announced it about a month after Epic. Didn't even try to defend themselves.

What you can walk away from this rant is this: Epic makes good, and original games that they constantly improve. Bungie are rip-offs who can only take credit for coming up with Forge. (Which is alright.)

I haven't played either Layton or Phenoix Wright (Because all the good Nintendo games are expensive, and I'd rather buy Batman AA for 30$ then Pokemon for 40$.)

BUT! I have seen them, and from what I've seen they are rather good. Hopefully this crossover will be good, that way I can pretend to know about it.

I think that they're starting to run out of naming ideas. Black and White Versions? Seriously?
I do like the concept of triple battles, though.

There's a new generation about every four years. Every game in between has either been an updated version, a remake of an old game, or a spinoff, so when it comes to getting the "full" Pokémon experience, it's only one game every four years. Unless you're into the other games. I buy the remakes as well as the third versions, but if you're not a huge Pokémon fan like me you aren't missing much if you skip them.

A video game is like a pizza:

The bread is the gameplay; the sauce and cheese are the story and plot; and the ham, sausages, and pepperoni are the graphics, sound effects, and music.

The bread is necessary, but alone it feels bland. Add the sauce and cheese and you got yourself a good pizza. But I want a great pizza. So, add the toppings, which are unnecessary but make the pizza taste better in the end. Now you got a great pizza.

...

And also a hungry gamer. :/

But games don't need to have plots and story! Lots of great games are just bread with some toppings. Some are even just bread.

Generation 1 added 151, generation 2 added 100, generation 3 added 135, generation 4 added 107, and generation 5 added 156, actually. An average of 130 per generation, or about 32 every year. And it's not like creativity is too limited. There are tons of animals out there to make gimmicky variations on.

Yes, but nowadays we have the power to create excellent stories. Look at Arkham Asylum. That game had great story and gameplay (though the bosses were rather lacking). I just have high expectations for games, and I want to make great pizza. True, games don't need the best toppings *coughmegaman9cough*, but that doesn't need every game needs to copy these retro-styled game. In fact, Mega Man 9 and 10's graphics would not be able to run correctly on an NES system due to some of the color choices.

What I'm trying to get across is if you're trying to make a retro-style game, go nuts. I love seeing those games. But for those who are modern, remember the bread, sauce, and cheese. They're the most important. Toppings come later.

Sometimes toppings can take precedence over sauce and cheese, though. There's no arguing that you can't make pizza without bread, but sometimes even nowadays we have games like Braid. That game basically has a complete excuse plot (unless you count all the symbolism), but its gorgeous art and music are much of why it's so great.

Likewise, Mario games (from which Braid takes a lot of inspiration). Virtually no plot, just pure awesome gameplay and fantastic aesthetics.

[color=#008000:the war of 1812]There are very few new and coming up games which interest me for multiplayer PC FPS. All I see are copies of MW2, which i dislike for so many reasons. In my opinion the older games in these series (eg: COD, Battlefield, MOH) were so much better in terms of game play than the ones now. So as some of the older games lose popularity and newer games all look disappointingly similar I find myself stuck in limbo, feeling quite bored.

So I just play other Genres like RTS and RPG which seem to be going fine. Although the trend to make everything "user friendly", to draw in a more casual player base, is not something I'm a fan of.[/color:the war of 1812]

Post Re: Discussion: Video Games
I'm not much of a gamer. Overall, there are very few games a year that come out that I want to play. This year is an exception, it seems games keep coming out that are awesome and I can't help but get them.

My favourite companies would be Nintendo, Sega, Bioware, Silicon Knights (despite Too Human's game-play not being anything spectacular, they did make Eternal Darkness and that gives them my undying loyalty), and Activision.

Truth be told, I was a huge gamer in the 16-bit era an actively took part in the console wars of that generation. I was on the side of Sega. Given that I was a big gamer back then, but not now, a lot of my favourite companies are dead and buried (or bought and turned into lame subsidiaries that don't make anything but terrible sequels to their great games of old). I'm looking at you "SCE Studio Liverpool." Geez, even your name and logo went down the drain.

I, in contrast to apparently everybody in the world, really hate first person shooters. Like, really really hate them. There are a few FPS games I can play, and some I even like, but it's usually because they're not pure FPS's or have some other outstanding quality that helps me get over it. For example, I enjoyed F.E.A.R. because I happen to like horror games, and I'm okay with Fallout 3 because it's primarily an RPG and doesn't heavily function as a shooter. On the other hand, I'm having a hard time going through Mass Effect, even though I want to play it! The only pure FPS I ever enjoyed was Goldeneye for the N64. That game was awesome, and I played it so much. I remember once, a friend of mine just got Gears of War and was really excited about it. He finally talked me into playing it with him, and it was the most boring six hours of my life. Yeah, it's not an *F*PS but there's no real difference between 1st and 3rd person. But really I wish they'd stop making the darn things.

So what games do I like? I really just have my main franchises. I like my Zelda's, I like my Metroid's, I used to like my Smash Bro's before Brawl ruined everything, I like Civilization's, and The Elder Scrolls's and Pokemon's and Kirby's. I conditionally like Sonic. Most of the games now adays are mediocre to terrible, but it's Sonic and I can't turn my back one of my childhood heroes, Tails. I liked Fallout 3 primarily because it played like an Elder Scrolls game, except better. I just got into Silent Hill, which I enjoy for the minor heart attacks I have every time I play a Silent Hill game. That's about it for me really.

I honestly spend the majority of my video game time playing old games. I still play Sonic 1 - Sonic 3 and Knuckles all the time, I still enjoy Civilization: Call to Power over all the more recent Civilization games, I still play Creatures 2, I still play Agony and Shadow of the Beast (which I still can't beat), I've probably played Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask all the time, and Eternal Darkness still gets a lot of play. The only modern game I play with a large regularity is Starcraft II.

I'm really reluctant to try out new games, even if I hear great feedback. For example, I never would have tried Fallout 3 if I didn't watch a friend play it and found it to basically be Oblivion in a post-apocalyptic world. On the other end, I enjoyed Dragon Age: Origins, but it took me about 6 months to play it even though all my friends were telling me it was great and I should.

It seems I kind of like fighting games, but nobody I know likes them except Smash Bros. and I can't stand Brawl so I rarely play it. But if I could, I'd probably play a lot of fighting games. I also remember liking racing games, but again, none of my friends like them so I can't play them. I remember I played a ton of Rollcage...by myself, when it came out.

I have nothing more to say. :P

Oh, Oregon Trail is an amazing game!

I bought that and it was fun. Though if you've never played it, I think the FFVI remake on the GBA would be a better choice. And probably cheaper. The graphics aren't as nice but it's a better game.

I feel similarly about shooters. I don't hate them, exactly, but very rarely do I enjoy one. Goldeneye was one of my exceptions as well, since I played that so incredibly much. In fact, it took a lot of coaxing to get my parents to buy that for me and my sister, since we were somewhere around 7 and 10 at the time. Gears of War is pretty boring to me too, but the horde mode isn't terrible.

Another Brawl hater? I love Brawl, despite its flaws. I felt like it improved more than it screwed up. The fact that its problems are so clear-cut and easily identified just goes to give me optimism for the fourth one, since I trust them to fix them.

Racing games bore me unless they're unrealistic, like Mario Kart. I probably would like Blur if I knew anyone who had it and played it. Then again, what its commercial insinuated about Mario Kart makes me mad at it so I don't know.

Oregon Trail and Number Munchers were all we would play on our computers in elementary school. They're pretty much the best educational games ever.

Hmm... i'm quite certain i posted in this topic, but i see no posts made my me...

Currently i went back and played the Dragon Quest series and CastleVania series for good old times sake and some old fashioned Friday the 13th/Elm Street on the NES. they were good games for the NES <3

since then though i been sticking to just Steam and Blizzard games for their outstanding performance and balance. mostly World of warcraft and STarcraft 2 though, but still long for what's known as the best MMOFPS game. if you guys ever heard of Planetside, that's the only game so far that ever came close to achieving that dream.

I myself am not a big gamer, there are not that many games I like because I am rather fussy about them but when I do get a game I enjoy I can hardily put it down until I have completed it.
The games I like best are rule-them-ups, God-games, strategy games, and roleplaying games were you can make choices to influence the story. I play games from both Xbox and Nintendo (I like Nintendo better though) such as Zelda (pretty much all the more modern games), Brawl, Little King's Story (some might laugh but it really is a charming game), Battalion Wars, Mario Kart, Advance Wars, Civilisation and Mass Effect. (There are more but they are all over 13 so...).

On the topic of videro james: holy crap you guys, Kirby's Epic Yarn.

If you like adorable and have a Wii, you owe it to yourself to play this game. It is obnoxiously cute.

Lets put down our game tags! (Note: I'll only put everybody elses gamertag on a list.)

Post Re: Discussion: Video Games
I personally hate computer games and any form of online gaming. Mainly due to annoying brats who ruin the game experience. and my computer sucks.. I have a ps3, ps2, psp, dsi xl. I like Nintendo (and prlly always will) but I'm not too keen on the motion sensing stuff. But there are a few wii games I want.. I dislike the Xbox 360 cause Microsoft is eeevol! Altho there are some good games on it..and Halo is a juvinile, overated shooter catered to mostly preteens. In my day you had to go around looking for health packs, worrying about running into a nasty that will rip out your spleen before you find one. Now, all you have to do is duck behind anything for 5 secs and bam, your fully healed. And duck and cover shooting like Gears is an abomination. Two guys each, one jumps up and shoots while the other is cowering, then he cowers and the other shoots, so you do that stupid dance for hours. Then one of them is smart enough to GO OVER TO THE muffins and cookies GUY and shoots him in the head. It's this constant wimpification of games now. "I dont wanna go over there! I'll hide behind this overturned car (that's mysteriously way smaller than me) and wait till I get a clear shot." It's like when ppl play multiplayer in Halo and you have a whole map and everyone is sniping. Cause they don't have the kahones to actually walk around, they are scared to, so they sit and wait and hide. Another thing is these "realistic" graphics. Yes realism means everything is all shades of greys and browns, with glare so bright you can't see yourself half the time! Bah! My favorite system ever was the ps2. They had so much 3rd party support, so they had a massive array of very good rpgs (my fav genre of game). But the equivalent now, 360 (which has the most 3rd party support) offers mostly only shooters, (a few rpgs, but they are so generic and bland, and the ones that aren't have horrible "realism" graphics. There was maybe 2 rpg games I'd play for it. Whereas the ps2 I could fill my room with awesome games that are out for it. (and I have..) Another thing I dislike is all these downloads and updates. I remember when you bought a game, you bought the whole muffins and cookies game! You didn't buy half a game, where the developers decided that the last half could be a down-loadable content you would have to pay extra for a few months after the release. And having to update your system every few months or something. The last generation, you got the system, and it was complete, never needing any updates. I bought my ps2 when it was launched and to this day it's still working fine. Sorry about that rant tho.. lol

The games I have the fondest memories playing are co-op games.
It is a feature I wish more newer games would put some focus on.
FlintTheSquirrel and I have spent many many hours in front of the TV with these gems:

Goof Troop (SNES)
Mickey & Donald's World of Illusion (Genesis)
TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist (Mega Drive)
Super Smash Brothers (N64) / Melee (Gamecube) / Brawl (Wii)
Tales of Symphonia (Gamecube) / Abyss (PS2) / Vesperia (Xbox 360)
We Love Katamari (PS2)
LittleBIGplanet (PS3)

I'd list some shooters, but those generally get Flint angry. Long live GoldenEye 007!!
Have any fond co-op memories of your own to share, or games to recommend?
