Is it Egbert? :P
Douglas isn't my real name, but because of a name block put on me by a higher-order being known as Djinni, I can't say my real name.

It's not that easy with my real name. In Germany it's a male name, in the US it's rather a female name (also the spelling is slightly different).

Well that doesn't sound like a healthy relationship. Spouses ought to consider each other equals, I reckon.

But guys, we're way off topic again. Remember, this thread is for discussing our gender. Please take random chatting (and gratuitous praise for me) to the chat thread.

Still male with a male name by the way. In fact, both my first and middle names are decidedly male.

My name is universally a name for males. :P The reason is simple. ;) Usually, the gender of Italian names is recognizable from the final vocal, that's "O" for males and "A" for females. It's not so for names like Andrea, which only recently is accepted also as a female name here. The female name Maria is also used as middle name for males.

I think I've already mentioned my gender like very very very early in this thread before, but just in case anyone wants to know (or has forgotten)

I am reminded each time I look in a mirror that I'm most certainly male. However, I have been mistaken for female a few times in certain old haunts online, due to my typing/writing style in the past.

I think Nicholas is a masculine name (though I question Nick or Nicky as possibly being given affectionately to a girl). On a side note of the statistics, I noticed that there are 1638 registered users on this forum and counting. Thus, only a mere fraction of the actual group ever voted (assuming that only a few of them are duplicates by the same person). I also assume that you can't vote more than once for this poll.

Interesting. What exactly constitutes as a female writing style? How is this different from a male writing style and how much differentiation is there between the two styles?
I've had people assume that I was male in the past, but when I asked, they just confessed that they assume everybody on the internet to be male unless proven otherwise. I did inquire on whether my writing style affected their judgement, but they said no, and that it wasn't an accurate way to determine a persons gender, as any person of any gender could adopt either writing style.

So I'm genuinely interested in this subject, hope it's not too off topic.

The only time I have seen typing style be noticed was when I went anonymous by mistake. I guess how I type is noticeable and different enough.

I think for many, there are different things some people of different genders might focus on or different stereotypical topics (like shoes, and cars, obviously this isn't a positive thing and kind of rude to assume someones gender by if they like shoes or not). though I have no idea if I am right or make sense. Either way it shouldn't matter what a posting style says of a person. obviously it isn't the best indicator.

Every day for the past year I have worn a pair of brown leather, safety toe Timberland work boots.

I think it's safe to say my choice of footwear is about as stereotypicaly manly as you can get. :P

nowadays you actually have to get into what kind of shoes to use that as a stereotypical judgement, some guys spend hundreds of dollars on high end sneakers.

personally, I get one pair of Dr Scholl's sneakers at Walmart for about $30 and they last me a whole year to a year and a half.

Really, any metric used that isn't 'Has the individual said they're X gender?' relies on sometimes offensive stereotypes. I've only been on Web forums about 12 years, but I haven't seen any obvious difference in the way men and women compose messages.

Also, this isn't the shoe thread, don't talk about what shoes you wear here. = P

I'll start first by clarifying that in all but twice in my experiences it has only happened during the period of my life when I was posting up works of fan based fiction. Also an old female gaming friend also assumed me to be female for nearly a year at one point and shortly after I eventually revealed I was actually male, we drifted apart. I cannot be sure why it was the case but I think these sort of mistakes are based on the experiences that the other may or may not of have. It doesn't seem to be held to each gender, while as I know of I've had had more ladies online assume I'm female than men online both have mistaken me in the past. My guess would be that I don't have much of the stereotypical male mannerisms, nor do I tend to converse in a way that easily points me out as male. As for my writing/typing until recently I was always reserved in what I would say, which would of made it more difficult to judge me.

Incorrectly being identified as the opposite gender is a surprisingly common thing that has happen in my close family by others in the past, my brother's voice when he was younger sounded feminine over a phone and my sister acted more like a guy than I did before we all grew up.
