So.....Dungeons and Dragons?

A few weeks ago, I asked a close friend of mine to teach me how to play Dungeons and Dragons, as I had long heard of it, but never had any experience playing, and desperately desired to. Today, almost a month later, he finally brought in some character sheets, and helped us figure things out. I am so freaking excited! My mom says I am taking my already pretty bad nerdiness to the nest level.

Also, thanks to Wolfy for saying this bit of advice: "Just be prepared (depending on your game master) for things to go horribly wrong in the game. Every avenue will be against you and your party"

I have never been a part of a real group thing like this, and I am hoping to get all my friends at school to play, so we can just have parties with hours of playing this.

Mass hysteria, ensue.

I make this forum in a hope that people could offer advice on my trip into....how did my friend put it? Madness. Oh boy, here I go. Also, if you have any funny stories, I'd love to hear them.

I've seen air elementals used as roombas to drop an entire army into a death-pit. does that count as an interesting story?

*Chuckles* Certainly.

Never played, sorry, but I do recall a DnD story by ProJared. And entire campaign he set up was derailed by his buddy deciding he wanted to use a flying ballista as a bat, and succeeded in a series of perfect rolls to catch it, wield it, and defeat the boss with it.

Do what your character would do, not what you would do. Included in this is not to use knowledge your character wouldn't have. If your character is stupid, especially, don't be afraid to make stupid mistakes.

Also don't overthink your alignment. Think how your character acts first, and define that with an alignment, not the other way around.

also, don't be afraid to betray and TPK your teammates half way through the campaigns end game to further your own goals because they forgot that you were playing a neutral evil half dragon.

what? am I the only one that's done that?

That, Buster. That is why I will never play DnD.

And this is why DMs tend to ban evil-aligned characters. :P

Don't worry about it, Cyber. If y'all don't want to play that way, then you don't have to!

To be fair, it was a villains campaign, and the only one who's end goal didn't involve TPKing the party was our leader. His plan was sacrificing the entire mortal world to the god of murder by blowing it up.

I never understood villains with the evil plan to destroy the world, don't they also live on the world?

Speaking of evil aligned PC's

In the campaign I'm playing in my character's spending some time Undead, because Beholders have Death Rays, and the party doesn't have a cleric (we have a bard).

That came with an alignment shift to NE, I'm still working out how I want to play this.

My first Character is Chaotic Good, since I affiliate with that to be honest. XD

When playing video games, or role-playing, I tend to do what I believe is right, but I generally end up braking things in the process. ^^ยด

From the sounds of it, things could get interesting. I've never really played a "separate character" even in Skyrim. It's a meld of what I'm like and what I randomly decide to do (i.e., join the thieves guild and eliminate the Dark Brotherhood).

I've played so many personas, that if I were to drop the act, the rest of the group would probably think I'm still acting.

It's always fun to play a persona other than yours! My character is charismatic, entitled, and dishonest, which is really nothing like me. It's fun to play!

We also have a really smart guy who plays a stupid character, which is a lot of fun.

Ahh D&D. Had a group but it fell apart because we all had lives. Had another one and it didn't last either. However, my Luchador Monk did manage to grapple a robotic Minotaur successfully before the party disbanded.

Luchador? That sounds awesome!

Yeah. Took all the grappling feats I could to replace the normal Monk feats. Basically ran around screaming "LUCHA!" and trying to grapple everything. It was great. The best thing about D&D is the stories and the Homebrew. A good DM can make pretty much any rule a "guideline."

I'm honestly becoming more interested in this now, but I don't have any friends who I could get together with.

You could try to find an on-line group. Video chat play is gaining popularity over Google Hangouts, Skype, or the Roll20 app.

Yeah, I have been looking for people to help me learn how to play better, since honesty, I still have no idea what I am doing. And if anyone is interested in doing a game with me, it would be pretty nice.

If there's a college or university of even a hIgh/secondary school around, you might well find a club of fans, Jolty.

Ahaha, yeah. My high school sucks though, it literally is just "jocks" and stuff, and my friends are not interested in playing.

Regrets, Jolt. Some clubs announce meetings on line.

Just get everybody in here to download a campaign runner program, and pick a set time every week to get everyone to connect?

That would literally make my week, but unfortunately, I have only a chromebook, and half the sites I attempt to load fail and crash it... So, I doubt the odds of that happening. Thanks anyways, Buster.

I would be up for forming a D&D group if enough people were interested. I haven't played much, but I really want to play more. I know that tabletop simulator has some pretty decent D&D setups if nothing else works.

I would love to help create this, but my schedule isn't as stable as I'd like. There are weeks that I don't get weekends off because we're doing something and I've found the best way to maintain a group is through consistent meeting.

I would love to create D & D Discord Server. I mean, if people want it. It would be a place we could plan all this out. Whatever you guys want.

My hours and days off are on a random rotation. the only thing I can consistently count on is they won't be the same twice in a row.

We could make a server and then just do it when enough people are online. Or take polls every week to see when people are available.

My off days these past two months have been Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I usually get home from work around 5 PM Central time, but no guarantee I'll be able to stay awake. Saturdays, however, are night shifts, 1-9 PM.

Let's see... I usually get Saturdays and Sundays off. I don't really do anything after work but the end of day hour does change sometimes.

Certinly! Not today though. I am a busy guy. Also, I don't use discord all that often, so I think I need to remember my login ^^'

Edit: Weird....It's not recognizing I posted...
