Movies, recently seen or in general.

Just saw Pacific Rim. Most fun film of the year! A bit light on the characters, but the action is just perfect (and probably the focus of the whole project).

I just saw Monsters University. It was really good, though The Blue Umbrella was one of Pixar's weaker shorts.

Recently saw The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
Wow... loved it, it's such a great film. I think I should watch more movies starring Frank Sinatra.

Doesn't "Monsters University" use the same basic plot as "Revenge of the Nerds"?

I saw Akira yesterday. I can't really say I liked it. The animation was great but, I didn't really get it. It seemed like a lot of explosions with little to no reason and stuff just sort of happened without being explained.

I also rewatched Ghost in the Shell recently (why yes, I am on an anime binge) and found it just as confusing yet enjoyable as the first viewing.

I tend to shy away from Hollywood stuff, to be honest. But I saw Despicable Me 2 a few weeks ago. It was hilarious.

I also saw Star Trek Into Darkness. I absolutely loved the first remake; it moved me in a way no other film has. Into Darkness wasn't quite to that level, but it was still enjoyable.

It's a parody/homage to '80s college movies, so probably.

Another thing I liked about Monsters University is the ample use of drumline in the soundtrack. As a former drumline member, I can very much appreciate it!

If you are in a mood for what I can safely say is the worst movie known in the history of mankind, may I suggest for your viewing displeasure, Birdemic: Shock and Terror.

I still need to watch that. I recommended it the other day when my friends and I watched a double feature of Sharknado and Miami Connection.

Oh definitely. Probably should've made it clearer that while that movie is animated don't go showing it to any kids. To quote the movie: "This wasn't exactly like something out of the Aristocats."

I'm sure it's more kid friendly than Fritz the Cat. *shivers*

They will be OK. Like Don Bluth always said, kids can handle anything as long as it has a happy ending.

Of course, my dad let me watch "Zombie" and also "The Beyond", both directed by Lucio Fulci, when I was only 5 years old. I think I turned out alright.

If you want some horror films that will really scare you, I suggest you see them.

For some reason I have been on a bent for the movie "Highlander". If you have not seen it, I highly recommend it. It is one of my all time favorite fantasy films. I will say this, avoid all the sequels to this classic film, they are terrible! The only thing I will recommend if you like "Highlander" is an anime version called "Highlander: The Search For Vengeance". It is beautifully animated and is by the director of "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" and "Ninja Scroll".

Just watched The Secret of NIMH for the first time since I was a child. I forgot so much of that movie, noticed so much more as an adult. Truly a classic.

I saw "Pacific Rim" today and it was awesome! The opening scene of the Golden Gate Bridge being destroyed by the first kaiju made have the same feeling I had as a child watching my first Godzilla movie. I highly recommend it. I think it was an interesting idea that the monsters were actually shock troops sent by extradimensional aliens to conquer us.

so I'm unclear on something in pacific rim.

when they said the kaiju had tried this before with the dinosaurs did they mean that they killed the dinosaurs, or they were the dinosaurs? the way it was said was kinda open ended

I believe that they meant that the beings creating and controlling the kaiju were responsible for wiping out the dinosaurs. They sent the kaiju through as a test run. But the atmosphere was not conducive to their form of life so the had to wait 65 million years before the could actually conquer Earth.

My friend sat through all of it. It's apparently unwatchable.

Mel Brooks' The Twelve Chairs
It's not an over-the-top comedy like many of his other movies, but I think it's one of his best (though I don't think he ever had a bad movie).

I've never even heard of it before. Is it still a comedy?

I just found out that "Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut" is going to finally get a DVD release. It won't be until next year but I am very excited.

I saw the movie twice. It was meant to refer to dinosaurs being the previous iteration of kaiju.

Yes, it is. I don't think Brooks ever wrote or directed anything other than comedy, he did produce some.
I just found out that the film is an adaptation of a satirical novel of the same name.

Another good semi-comedy from someone known for madcap humor would be Brazil by Terry Gilliam (of Monty Python fame).

In that case you should watch Gilliam's adaptation of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro give some of the best performances of their careers and it is hysterically funny.

I watched "Dawn of the Dead" and "Exit Humanity" again. Some of the best zombie movies ever made.

It wasn't a masterpiece, buuut it was infinitely better than Xmen Origins: Wolverine. Better than Iron Man 3, and I enjoyed it more than Man of Steel...am I missing something, or do I have to say this is the superhero movie I enjoyed more than any other all year?

While I still liked Iron Man 3 more than this movie, I do agree that this was a pretty good movie. I think what works about it is that it doesn't really play as a "superhero" movie. It's more a noir action film that just happens to have mutants and crazy sci-fi in it. I think it will make for a great gateway movie to purer samurai and yakuza flicks.

on that note, I really need to watch some noir films in general, you know any good ones worth watching?

Now the question is how they're going to push Wolverine to even more importance relative to the other characters in the next movie. Maybe there will be multiple of him? The Wolverines?

well there are multiples of every other character in the next movie thanks to time travel, so there might be multiples of him

Technically Wolvering was introduced in a Spider-Man issue, so I actually don't have a problem with him having his own movies apart from the X-Men.

and he also had his own comic series

Haven't seen anything lately, need to change that.

Lately I have been in the mood for Italian and Spanish horror films. I have watched "Tombs of the Blind Dead", "Return of the Blind Dead", "House By The Cemetery", "Manhattan Baby" and "The Beyond".

Recently watched The Magnificent Seven. What a great cast; Eli Wallach, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn.
Also saw 3:10 to Yuma, the original from 1957.
