Re: Chat Thread 40: Where in the World is JeffCvt?
YES!
A CHAT THREAD IN MY NAME!! I AM A FORUM LEGEND!
I've had good math teachers, bad math teachers, and three different ones this year so far. What works well for me is to learn how to use a formula inside and out doing the same thing over and over and over. Then I can usually apply it in different situations, even if I haven't learned exactly how to use it in that particular case. That's just how my brain works.

Re: Chat Thread 40: Where in the World is JeffCvt?
I know, right? All the cool kids hang out in maths. That's very true, it's amazing how, even people in my maths class in highschool, the teacher is helping them and asks "so what does that give us?" and then they just guess. Our revision sheets used to give us the answers so if we couldn't get that answer we had to ask the teacher what we were doing wrong, rather than just assuming we got the right answer and never following up our working. Unfortunately, half the time at least three answers would be wrong and identified by the smarter students within a week.

I like how I was completely taken out of the context of Brent's first post, but okay. "Hey Sleet, can you go on my Facebook and email my profile picture to me? I need it for a scholarship document." Freaking Sleet. ;P

Re: Chat Thread 40: Where in the World is JeffCvt?
So guys, it's finally Friday!
I don't know about you all, but I have been ready for this week to be over since Wednesday. God, it hasn't been a bad week, just one that I wish for some reason would end.
Was it just me, or did everyone else feel like that too?

Re: Chat Thread 40: Where in the World is JeffCvt?
I've been exactly the opposite. I don't know where the past two weeks have gone, man. It's probably because my insomnia has been cooling it now that Day Light Savings Time is almost over, and my mood has been elevated with the sunshine and fair weather. I'm sort of susceptible to the winter glooms, so the beginning of springtime is always a very welcomed change for me. I sleep better and I'm happier, plus my stress levels have hit all time lows. Time flies when you're having fun!

Re: Chat Thread 40: Where in the World is JeffCvt?
Well at least you had a good week. Like I said, mine wasn't bad, but when you get giant writing assignments and work on the harder stuff in math and your carpentry teachers don't have the right size finish nails forcing you to waste an entire class period since you have nothing else to work on, it gets kind of tired quickly.

I'm also glad Friday finally came, but I will have to wait for a good sleep till Sunday. Tomorrow I must stand up very early, like 6 am or sooner.
And I really need sleep. All those past days I was sleeping like 2 - 3 hours and I start to go into phrase where I don't know what's going on with me.

I only directly quoted the last post in the previous chat thread. what, was I supposed to quote the whole page? =P anyway, I'm kind of glad Friday came, but I have homework over spring break, so I don't get to just rest.

Re: Chat Thread 40: Where in the World is JeffCvt?
Yay, it's time for my bi-annual sinus infection. This explains why my nose has been so runny for the past few weeks. Now I just have to tough it out for about a week. I don't get "colds," my sinuses can't fight off anything when they do actually get infected, but my doctor won't write me a prescription until it's been a week with no improvement. I literally get them on such a schedule that he doesn't even need to ask me why I come (though he still does for the sake of his medical license).
At least I'm not contagious, but my asthma is gonna act something horrible now and I won't be getting very restful sleep until it blows over. A week before I tour my university, yaaaaaay.

Feel better Beagle. I know the feeling of dreading the upcoming week of sickness.
While I'm thinking of it, would anyone care to explain to me what exactally you learn in a Music Theory class? I know it has (or can have anyway) something to do with the ability to make music, but I don't know much else.

Guys, I need a suggestion. I'm in a digital photography class, and I might fail. My schedule at my job is terrible, just this week I have 3 shifts to pull that go on to 10, and I can't get the pictures before they are due, anyone have an idea of what I can tell my teacher?

"My job interferes with my ability to get classwork done."
That probably won't garner much sympathy, though - your instructor may tell you your academic career is more important than your job.

how about trying the other way. tell your boss that 3 shifts means you fail a class. Your boss may be understanding.

Woah, man, that's a pretty radical thought. (Most employers are willing to work with students' schedules, even faceless megacorps like mine.)

Re: Chat Thread 40: Where in the World is JeffCvt?
Call in sick to work and do homework? I've done it and I highly recommend it. It's way easier to get an employer to forgive a somewhat shady call in than it is to get a teacher to give you an extension.

I dunno about your class schedule but you could always try asking your employer for a shift change, depending on whether or not you're part time or full time. I mean if it's really spreading you thin like I think it is a schedule change could be beneficial!?

What kind of employer hires a student but isn't prepared to be flexible?

Re: Chat Thread 40: Where in the World is JeffCvt?
@Beagle: Wow, that's pretty strange, hope you feel better Beagle. I know my asthma goes stupid during winter, normally I can take Ventolin once a day and be fine but during winter, if I don't have a preventer, it's a huge strain (and a bit scary) to keep it no more than every 4 hours. @JeffCvt: In Music Theory, you learn about chords, key signatures, time signatures, note lengths, musical conventions, the words which describe the tempo as well as generally everything you need to set out a composition. If you go deeper, they teach you how to actually write music but most basic courses will just cover the semantics of writing out and understanding a composition. If you've done a musical instrument, you'll probably have most of the really basic stuff down. I think it's good if composing full and real music is something you really want to do but most people can survive just sticking with practicing their instrument. @TheGreyWolverine: This is a case of knowing what your work and boss are like and what your teacher is like and knowing who will likely be most understanding. There is always the option that you can call in sick this once and discuss with whomever you choose about changing your schedule on their end, but it's one of those things that some people are uncomfortable with. Alternatively, you could go meet up with Beagle, get her infection and then you have a legitimate excuse for both! (I know Beagle's not infectious but I always ponder this possibility when this issue comes up) I would say ask your work for a schedule change, most businesses will have a method to account for things like this whereas schools and colleges will want to stick to deadlines for the sake of "teaching their students to manage their time and partition their responsibilities better..."

Re: Chat Thread 40: Where in the World is JeffCvt?
Turn of events: I do not believe I am sick, I believe this is one of those rare couple of days where it may appear that I have allergies. Although I don't. Who knows, who cares, at least I don't feel like I'm dying. If I was sick, it would have gotten bad already.
I've had employers that just do not care what I have going on with school. They'd rather fire me, wanting someone who will always be on their beck and call for $2.35 an hour as a waitress. If your job really sucks and you have an employer that is selfish and obsessed with money, who doesn't care about his employees as people, I suggest quitting. I'm serious. People can say, "Your employer should be flexible because you're a student!" Well, guess what, not all of them are. In this economy, you could easily be replaced by a single parent who is willing to work any hours to feed her children. You are expendable to the company. Why should your employer care if you have a project? That doesn't benefit his business. I do hate to say it, but when it comes down to it, some of them just don't care. Some employers really are terrible excuses for people, and since you're 18, I suggest high tailing it out of there before he tries to dehumanize you anymore, and find yourself a part-time job where you and your aspirations to do well in school will be respected. It took me six jobs but I finally landed one! You can work at department stores and other retail-oriented places, they're pretty decent to work at.
I hope I'm not being over dramatic or anything, but I've gotten the feeling that you really hate your job, and I'm just giving you advice from previous experience. I don't want you going through what I went through.

Most of them. I'm lucky enough to work for the university but my friends with "real" jobs complain about their schedules all the time.
