That's adorable. It seems like that happens a lot when you suit about a lot. I imagine a lot of kids are excited to meet the "big doggy."

Re: Fursuits: do you own one?
Last summer, my family and a few of my friends went to the bowling alley for some fursuit bowling. Another family was there to celebrate a birthday, but the mom who was supposed to bring the cake and party treats didn't show up, so there wasn't anything for the child's birthday but soda pop and pizza.
Enter the fursuiters. We found out about the crisis and went over there to wish the child a huge happy birthday. So here's us all assembled, singing happy birthday together. I just got invited back by the facility manager who contacted me asking if I would be interested in returning sometime soon.
I think we're going to arrange another fursuit bowling outing.

I love that you can show this side of the fandom, Tycho. I really wish more people could be exposed to this sort of thing instead of the negativity with which so many regard us furries and I wish more furries would use their suits as you do to spread joy and fun.

It's incredible, how much joy you bring to other with your suit. Even to us with the stories you share. That's great!

Re: Fursuits: do you own one?
Fortunately you were there. You just made that group of children really happy with this initiative, great job! A children's happy birthday party without a cake is really bad, y'all know, right? Maybe a fursuit can't replace a missing cake, but it's probably unusual and unexpected in such parties, and it's going to be remembered.

Re: Fursuits: do you own one?
Special photograph from this past weekend:
We have been asked repeatedly over the past few months to try and make time, make a trip out to Grand Rapids, and meet with Sage, a young 15-year old artist who has been creating her own fursuits. Sage and her mom & dad met me and my whole family, and I helped accompany her on her first 'outside' adventure in her character Melo. We went to the local park and met some random neighborhood kids who, to Sage's great (and delighted) surprise, were blown away by the costumes.
Preconceptions, where none previously exist, become yours to write. As you can see, Fursuiting can be a wonderful, whimsical experience to share pretty much anywhere.

Re: Fursuits: do you own one?
There was a fursuiter at the mall Saturday.
The local Humane Society held their "Tour For Life" event there for pet adoption and it was a big to-do. There were the animals too but also vendors, and music and dance troupes. And of course this guy in a husky suit. I think my friend Scape might know him but I refrained from asking so as not "spoil the magic". He entertained the kids and seemed to like my Anubis shirt.
I found out from Scape that you can actually make a career out of suiting. He got an interview to be a mascot for the Charlotte Hornets. When you can do that, its fur suiting on a new level.

Something I have done, but I have been too busy to really capitalize on it, is to create a professional trifold brochure that I can give to staff and directors of the various festivals and events within my area. I have given out a few, and been asked to participate in some charity events. So far, the events have all conflicted with business trips that I am committed to doing for my research. - so I guess maybe I'll have to either get less busy at my job or else TIVO myself.
REWIND back to page one, when I first posted in May, 2012 about my fursuiting experience.
Back then, my wife was dead-set against the fursuit, and figured that I was going off the deep end... and she wanted to have nothing to do with it and stated it as such.
Well, I am delighted to report that she's grown comfortable with my esoteric little hobby, and will now go places with me to watch the happy mayhem ensue. It makes an incredible difference to have your spouse there, supporting you and looking happy.
Can you believe that this thread is now three years old?

That's great! Its cool that you can achieve some celebrity status and make some income by appearing in your suit. I think you make a great freelance mascot.

Re: Fursuits: do you own one?
I'll never be able to afford a fursuit, and I doubt they even make a ferret fursuit for a 6' 3" tall person. But I guess I'll ask where do you guys find where to buy a fursuit or have one made. (Anyone know where to find a really good ferret one...)
Currently traveling across the United States. Still up for any conversations though.

Re: Fursuits: do you own one?
You actually commission them, Civilization. You send the maker your character reference picture and your measurements, or better yet a duct tape dummy (a mould of you made from duct tape) so they can make the measurements themselves and then in a couple of months they send you the fursuit made to your specifications. There's quite a few makers out there - a search of Google or FA should turn up some good ones for you. Make sure to pick someone whose style you like and who has good reviews. You don't want to pick someone and pay them $3000USD for a suit only to have the suit fall apart or be ill-fitting when you first put it on.
That $3000USD is a ball park figure too. Depending on who you commission and on if you get a full or partial suit and on how many accessories you get the cost may vary from just a few hundred up to five or six thousand dollars or more.
Getting a suit is on my bucket list for when I graduate and actually start making a decent income.

Re: Fursuits: do you own one?
I'd say $1500 can get a decent fursuit as long as it's not too complicated.

Probably the ultimate in paid fur suiting. Harou Nakajima, the actor/stuntman who played Godzill from 1954 to 1972.tychoaussie wrote:Radio Blue Heart - That's really cool!Radio Blue Heart wrote:There was a fursuiter at the mall Saturday.

Strange. Godzilla looks a bit different not being shown as a large monster.

Radio Blueheart - Those are some classic photos that I've never seen before - pretty neat. Thanks for finding them.
Yes, movie scale can certainly be a mind-bender - Then again, maybe the Japanese lady is just really, really tall, kind of like Susan (Ginormica).

Re: Fursuits: do you own one?
Harou Nakajima not really that tall a man. His head is in the neck section of the costume looking out through tiny holes. He had to endure some serious stuff playing Godzilla and got hurt in the process.
My friends went to FWA and Alyson got to debut her fur suit: Cap'n Cougar!
Here she is hamming it up.
Alyson is also an accomplished artist, so hit her up for some commission work, she'll appreciate the business. She's on tumblr, FA, Weasly and other sites.

Re: Fursuits: do you own one?
He was back again. He must be the official Humane Society mascot.
I was on my way to the pawn shop to see what movies they had and he was there with a table and some people doing a fundraiser for the Humane Society. I took these after I finished. The pawn shop sells used DVDs at 5 for $10. So, as my good deed for the day I gave him a copy of "Hidalgo" I found in there and told him "For a friendly dog here's a movie about a horse." He seemed to appreciate it and I told him that if he didn't want it he could add it to the fundraiser wares. He didn't talk because he didn't want to ruin the magic. I asked him if he knew Scape and he said he did. For all I knew it could have been Scape.

I was going to do it at first, then my spidey sense said to not mix politics and fursuiting, so they are just going to have to demonstrate without the big dog.
