personally i think that their parents are dead
and it happened very shortly after applebloom's birth
which was not long before applejack went to visit her aunt and uncle

Personally I don't see why they wouldn't make it canon as its basically what was intended. I mean its not like it would be the first time in a kids cartoon that it happened. Heck IIRC in Hey Arnold! Arnold's parents were considered dead for all but the last two episode of the show, by everyone but Arnold. (though I will admit that its been years since I've watched it.) Then there is the obvious Batman and Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers Gadgets dad is dead at the start of the series.

There's also Goofy's wife in Goof Troop. Or at least I'm pretty sure she was dead.
Plus there was the Rugrats which was very straight forward about Chuckie's mom.

the thing is they really have no reason to state it in the show. I doubt they'd have an entire episode devoted to the fact that her parents are dead.
doesn't mean they'll make it canon that they're alive, just leave it as is.

would make a good episode

it might be hard to get it allowed to air
but the fim crew could probably still do it well

Somehow I had completely forgotten about Chuckie's Mom.

A conclusion that I came to. One of my favorite movies from my childhood, Ridley Scott's "Legend" bares many striking resemblances to the first ever MLP episode "Rescue at Midnight Castle". The MLP episode predates "Legend" by a little over a year. So you can draw your own conclusions based on what I present here.

First off, the antagonists. Darkness portrayed by Tim Curry and Tirek portrayed by Victor Caroli.

Physical appearance: Red skin, horns, cloven hooves (although Tirek has four), fangs

Disposition: Hateful and mean

Motivation: Bring about an eternal night that they will rule.

Method of doing this: The capture of unicorns by Darkness, and Unicorns and other types of ponies by Tirek

Minions: Various types of monsters and good creatures that they have corrupted or taken control of.

Adversaries: Jack o' The Green with magical forest folk who give him enchanted weapons. As opposed to a human girl with ponies using a rainbow given to the by an old wizard.

I am not saying that Ridley Scott and William Hjortsberg ripped them off, I just think its fun that their are so many parallels between the two.

Once advantage that "Rescue At Midnight Castle" has over "Legend" is its lack of Tom Cruise. Although I think I would rather have to fight with Meg Mucklebones than listen to the Sea Ponies singing any day.

Its an excellent film! If you have the chance, watch the Director's Cut. Not only is it a better cut, it saves Darkness for later in the film as opposed to the US theatrical cut (which I just ruined for you), it has a completely different score by Jerry Goldsmith. The US version has music by Tangerine Dream. It is not inferior, just less appropriate.

I think that Chrysalis would make a good Loki, but who do you think would be good as a reveal as Thanos? Discord... or Derpy? We would never see it coming!

Another interesting connection between MLP and horror.

Britt McKillip, the voice of Princess Cadence played the character Macy in the Halloween horror anthology "Trick 'R Treat", one of my all time favorite horror films. It is a testament to her ability as an actress that she has the range and versatility to play a character as mean and calculating as Macy and still play a character as sweet and nice as Cadence. Maybe she channeled some of that Macy meanness when she played the False Cadence!

Since Luna was imprisoned in the moon for 1000 years, do you think that she would have had a better disposition upon her return if instead she was trapped on the Satellite of Love?

I couldn't think of a better way to send 1000 years.

And for that matter was she trapped on the moon with The Mooninites and they taught her how to be evil? And did she wipe out the astronauts in the film "Apollo 18"?

If I'm not mistaken Faust said that she wanted to say that their parents were dead, but it never made into the cartoon because other people thought it was "too harsh".

That is pretty harsh. She could write in that they are settler ponies like Braeburn and have gone to start a new apple orchard somewhere far away.

We've seen Rarity's parents, Twilight's parents and Pinkie's parents. That just leave Rainbow's and Fluttershy's.

I think Fluttershy was abandoned because after she fell out of Clousdale no one seems to have come looking for her. That seems sadder.

I own one of the original My Little Pony books from 1985. It was my favorite childhood picture book when I was just starting to learn how to read. ^_^
