Re: 17th Century Fox - OOC
Not at all! It's quite helpful! We now know that it's a geologically unstable area so something like this is quite possible. I just want to know now whether volcanoes in this area are going to be the exploding type or the runny type.
Re: 17th Century Fox - OOC
Big badda boom:
Soufrière Hills volcano is a complex stratovolcano that forms the northern half of the small Island of Montserrat in the British Lesser Antilles. After 350 years of quiet, it came back into life in 1995 and started to build a new lava dome. The eruption alternated between less or more intense phases including rapid dome growth with associated powerful vulcanian explosions and large pyroclastic flows from dome collapse.
The eruption, in particular the effects of pyroclastic flows and lahars caused by heavy rains have destroyed a large part of the island, including the capital Plymouth, and the population has been relocated to the northern part of the island and has been fighting, with the help of the UK government, to maintain life on the island.
On this day in 1902, Martinique's Mount Pele begins the deadliest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. The following day, the city of Saint Pierre, which some called the Paris of the Caribbean, was virtually wiped off the map.
Mount Pele, the name meaning bald in French, was a 4,500-foot mountain on the north side of the Caribbean island of Martinique. On April 2, 1902, new steam vents were spotted on the peak, which overlooked the port city of Saint Pierre. Three weeks later, tremors were felt on the island and Mount Pele belched up a cloud of ash.
Caught up in the midst of an important election, residents of Saint Pierre failed to heed the mountain's warnings and evacuate. The nearby residents mistakenly believed that the only danger from the volcano was lava flow and that if lava started to flow, they would have plenty of time to flee to safety. In fact, some people came from outside the city to view the action, even after ash from the eruption began to block roads.
On May 7, activity on the volcano increased dramatically and the blasts grew significantly stronger. Overnight, there were several strong tremors and a cloud of gas with a temperature of more than 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit spilled out of the mountain. Finally, a tremendous blast in the early morning hours sent an avalanche of boiling ash down the side of the mountain.
The city of Saint Pierre was buried within minutes and virtually everyone died instantly. There were only two reported survivors--one was a prisoner held in an underground cell. Legend has it that he went on to be a circus attraction. In addition, 15 ships in the harbor were capsized by the eruption. One ship managed to stay afloat with half the crew surviving, although most suffered serious burns.

Re: 17th Century Fox - OOC
Ah, yes. I'd forgotten Mount Pelee. I've read that tale but never though to actually find it on the map. So, we now know that there are volcanoes in the area and that they go bang. Cool! Who votes for a volcano arc?
Re: 17th Century Fox - OOC
Also, completely coincidentally I'm sure, Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes.

Re: 17th Century Fox - OOC
Huh. Well there you go.
Re: 17th Century Fox - OOC
Correction:
Also, I dont know if Hlaoroo wants to do it this way, but the way I'd been running the ship... the human crew doesn't treat the pets as crew, they treat them as the property of their owners, If they want them to do something, they deal with their owners. New pets are going to be owned by *someone*, probably initially the captain and then once the boat's under way they'll be auctioned or even raffled to the crew. Pets who make a nuisance of themselves or are otherwise uppity will eventually get slapped down.
Think about how slaves were treated, historically, and then imagine they're not even human. This is barely out of the middle ages.
It's 1625 now, not 1725. ^@&^$&* century naming.Me wrote:There was a documented tsunami in the Caribbean in 1726. You're in 1725 now. Could be a volcano or earthquake.

Re: 17th Century Fox - OOC
I think that makes sense. We'll do it like that, if everyone is in agreement. Thanks, Argent.
As to that correction, 350 years back from 1995 is 1645 so that's not too far off anyway.

Having the pets treated as pets rather than as crew. If the crew needs them to do something then their owners make them do it and pets that don't have owners are by default owned b the captain until such time as he auctions them off.

Well the pets will still carry out duties as crew members - it's just that their duties will be delegated by their owners instead of the captain.

Yep. Hotep has suggested an arc about that to me in a PM. I'm open to anyone else's idea too though.

You mean like Castillo Pato?Hotep the psychic wrote:i still say we have a priate haven like tortuga in pirates of the caribean i. 17 century this way its open to all pirates that abide to rulings of the island and repairs could be done.
"Visting sailors". Ahem.OP wrote:Back home in Castillo Pato is a handful of fishing vessels (ex ship's boats), some farms, docks, surprisingly large warehouses for such a small town, and a tavern that supplies many of the needs of visiting sailors. The innkeeper, Juan Acosta (which may not be his real name), also owns over 50% of the Impudence and has substantial shares in two other ships and is the de-facto head of the town. He has a pet fox (the 17th Century Fox) who is the de-facto head of the animals of Castillo Pato.

Re: 17th Century Fox - OOC
No, a castle that's as small as a duck.
It's a reference to "Duck Tales".
Hyper and Hotep: Just a friendly reminder, please slow down a little to give the rest of us a chance to post. As I said before, please try to limit yourselves to five posts each per day. That goes for everyone else too, although everyone else could probably stand to up the posting rate a little.

You haven't read the OP, have you? Message 1.Hotep the psychic wrote:Castillo pato? that means castle duck in Spanish you know that right? or duck castle which ever you want.
More to Darkwing Duck's "St Canard" than Duck Tales "Duckburg".Hlaoroo wrote:No, a castle that's as small as a duck.

Re: 17th Century Fox - OOC
That was Hotep's idea. I'm not sure if you approved it when you were GM or shot it down fully, Argent. I think we did agree that it wouldn't happen though. You might need to change that, sorry Hotep.

Re: 17th Century Fox - OOC
I was actually just thinking a time skip to get the boat a few days away from the island so we can start another arc. It would also give the rats time to regroup. What do all y'all think?

Hehe I was just about to ask how having the pets do work is going to involve runoff into each other. I'll post when my calculus class is over.

Re: 17th Century Fox - OOC
That's entirely up to you, Roarin. The claws could come out to find out exactly what Cedric has heard, along with Rhyme's reaction or they could sort of gloss over the statement in an attempt to wheedle some other information from Cedric. Whatever you like.
