Title Text: Nihil concussurae odiosius acumine nimio

I'll bet none of you expected Tiger to have such strong feelings on literature!

At least they didn't talk about A Tell Tale Heart. I don't think I'd want to know Tiger's opinion on that book.

Huh, I rarely see anyone get defensive over their favorite books.

Great choice of title, by the way.

So once again the fight erupts
between Holmes and Poe's Dupin;
A feud of ferocious literary legend
bears itself to new witness here.
He owes his life to the French,
our legendary Brit, although pride,
extolled through Tiger's comfy chair,
led to the compliment being denied
and the feud thus begun goes on.
Tiger shows that he can read
more than just the TeeVee guide
and now the kiddies are gonna see
him whomp his producers hide!
For Dupin doers are 'inferior fellows';
they stay silent while a Holmsian bellows.

"No doubt you think that you are complimenting me in comparing me to Dupin. "Now, in my opinion, Dupin was a very inferior fellow. That trick of his of breaking in on his friends' thoughts with an apropos remark after a quarter of an hour's silence is really very showy and superficial. He had some analytical genius, no doubt; but he was by no means such a phenomenon as Poe appeared to imagine."

Poe had to put Dupin in Paris when he wrote those stories because at the time, it was the only place with an advanced enough police force to allow for a detective such as C. Auguste Dupin. Love that little guy.... the invention of the modern detective... Love that genre.

You see, I prefer Poirot and Hastings.... far better chemistry. And Christie loved making fun of other detective novels in there with small jabs.

I remember Andy Lane's Doctor Who/Sherlock Holmes novel 'All-Consuming Fire' - where the 7th Doctor is reluctantly partnered with the detective. Lane - who went on to write official Holmes books - gave Holmes a far more strident view on the matter than most when a similarity to 'The purloined letter' is pointed out. "Poe is an illiterate drunk and his Detective Dupin a fortunate blunderer!" I read that book almost two decades ago and, for some reason, that quote is always with me.

Hmm...I've never read The Purloined Letter so I can't say I agree with Tiger...but Sherlock stories are a pretty good read.

Also, who flooded the entire surface of the Earth? Or is that just a blue bowling ball on a stand? :?

Love the velvet cloak too. Makes Tiger look exceptionally dignified.

Oh what an advantage for Germans. We can simply read it, the pronunciation is nearly identical.
But I don't understand it, that little Latin I learned at school is nearly all lost, I never was good in learning languages. "Patria Romanorum Roma est." That was the first sentence in our Latin book and it's the only one I still know.

I'm surprised that Hercule Poirot isn't Tiger's favorite detective....there's a man who knew how to eat, at least in parodies.

Sam Diamond: "Frenchie here's got a point...."
Milo Perrier: "I'm not a Frenchie! I'm a Belgie!"

And now Miles enters, putting in a vote for Nero Wolfe.

Holmes having a low opinion of Dupin was canon in Doyle's stories, though he was less incensed over the matter. Doyle's response to criticism over it was that it was Holmes that was criticizing Dupin.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in A Study In Scarlet wrote:
"It is simple enough as you explain it," I said, smiling. "You remind me of Edgar Allan Poe's Dupin. I had no idea that such individuals did exist outside of stories."

Sherlock Holmes rose and lit his pipe. "No doubt you think that you are complimenting me in comparing me to Dupin," he observed.
A Scandal In Bohemia was rather similar, though Holmes actually lost that one. The Beryl Coronet also used the plot device of the detective already having the stolen item and demanding payment for it, though Dupin was more of a jerk because he held onto it for a month without telling anybody.

Now, is Tiger actually eroodite, or is he simply basing his opinion on Sherlock and various other adaptations?
Basil Rathbone!

Deliranti isti mustela.

Also, my favorite literary detective is ... hmmm ... I can't decide between Brother Cadfael and Lord d'Arcy. I think Cadfael, though I like the d'Arcy stories better as stories too many of them were obvious pastiches (albeit well done) of well known mysteries.

I'm more a fan of the more modern UK detectives like Mark Billingham's London based DI Thorne, Peter Robinson's Yorkshire based DCI Banks or Ann Cleeves Shetland based DI Perez.

honestly, I think I prefer the whodonits of J. R. Quicksolve, and the comedies of the like of detective Jack Clusto
Quicksolve is much more realistic, as the mysteries all can, and are supposed to, be solved by you, even if with a tiny bit of help, as opposed to the ilk of Sherlock, where it is much more likely the detective was given a script
Comedies are much more funny, but still often have the whole reveal thing, only it seems less absurd since it is a comedy, and it is supposed to be absurd. Sometimes they even get it wrong.
Admittedly though, I have more experiences with whodonits, and comedies with detective elements.
