Was it ever mentioned in the comic, or anywhere at all, what happened to them? Just curious...

Nope, wasn't mentioned. I also wonder what happened to his parents...

Considering the passage of time, they're probably dead.

Kinda a grim look on things, but it is realistic.

I wouldn't be surprised if they made another appearance in the comic, actually.

Housepets! pets live around fifty years, so how do you know?

It's possible they're still alive, though how well would be up for debate. Generally, wild animals don't live as long as domestic ones since they would then lack a lot of the comforts of having owners, such as shelter and a steady supply of food. I think the same would be true in this comic, unless I'm corrected.

Rick has confirmed this.

They live between 15 and 30 years on average, actually. Take a breed's or species's lifespan in real life and double it and that's what it is in the Housepets! world. Animals in the wild, therefore, live even less. My guess is around 20-30 years have passed between that flashback and the present, and therefore his pets are probably dead.

Okay, we shall listen to Sabrina:
Sabrina wrote:I may have neglected to mention beforehand: most animals in our world have significantly longer lifespans and smaller litter numbers than in your own. It’s still not the length of a human lifespan for most—elephants still only live about eighty years, and most ungulates still hover around forty and approach fifty, but dogs and cats also live up to forty years, though in the wild that number is often closer to fifteen. On average, anyway.

I'd say less.
Still, while it's true that Rick said that the pets leave twice as much as our pets, but that is contadicted here:

When Sabrina says dogs and cats live around forty years.

Pets can live up to 20 years in real life too.

Decided to search the archive again. Figured this is always a fun thing to consider. Chances are sadly by now his pets are likely dead, but if they are just... unusually old for pets now, you think we’ll see them? Personally, I just want an explanation for how they looked, they looked like monsters for Pete’s sake... (oh so that’s why he named him Pete, because you would say that in place of God)

Yeah, it took a while for me to notice a decision for the name Pete, too. Pretty clever.

Insanely clever, especially considering this was during the early days of the comic

As much as I disliked the temple crashers arc for how long it went... the fact his actual name was actually shown before was pretty cool

Well, Peanut in Grape’s dream couldn’t pronounce it. Both Peanut and Grape were constructs of Grape’s mind and thus limited by her knowledge of Akkadian, not Peanut’s.

Yeah I'm thinking that they are dead. They had to be a bit older than Joel when he was young and 15 years I assume have passed so them most like succumbed to old age or more horrifyingly, something in the wild that could have happened.

Still, I can imagine a pretty dramatic arc if they wandered back into King's life outta nowhere ...

We all could, it’s why we keep bringing them back up.

Yeah but if by some miracle they were taken off the streets and became owner pets again, I would imagine that they would be older than Rufus was at his death.

It is odd that Rick missed the opportunity to have them appear when King and Fox went to heaven

That might explain the cat, but “all dogs go to heaven”

Maybe they both were but since he was in the middle of something it wasn't a priority for him to seek them out and maybe they didn't know he was a dog.

The way I see it, there's three possibilities;

1. They're not there because they're in Hell.
2. They're not there because they're still alive.
3. They're there, but Heaven is a big place and King isn't one to go out of his way to find someone from his past. Remember, it was his mother who stumbled on him. And he didn't seem thrilled.

Speaking of, his mom recognized him immediately, so recognition doesn't seem to be the issue.

I mean, Mr. Milton was a literal ferret so she might not even think he’s been a dog for much longer than he’s been in heaven. Speaking of, are there still fan theories about where his dad is? I feel it’s mildly implied that he’s still alive, but nothing concrete supporting that idea

"if you get to heaven, prepare to be surprised by some of the people you find there. And prepared to have a lot of them equally surprised to run into you." C.S.Lewis, maybe... ;)

As I had it pointed out to me, all dogs go to heaven and Joel had one dog so I doubt that one pet would be in Heaven and the other one in Hell.

Might be interesting to see these two show up at Jessica's and discover their shared antipathy to King/Joel with Craig/Pete. The dramatic possibilities of their plotting, sorta like Gideon, Foulfellow, and the Coachman, could be intriguing. Still, after the darker moods of late, think Id'ruther see a couple more vintage players (Rex or Daisy, say) come out of shadows and have some lighter play for a time... Whatever their fates in terms of the BGardens narrative, Joel's Pets … like Jasper and Jinx … may just have no further roles to play in Rick's World. Not everybody gets an encore...
