I noticed there no longer is an ad from project wonderful on the left of the page, is this permanent or intended?

Forgot to edit, it's there now :)

Emmmmm... I'm a bit confused :|

Which words do you moderators consider offensive?

I mean, WTF and piss off are offensive but crap not, what?
(Results of searching "crap" : http://www.housepetscomic.com/forums/search.php?keywords=crap&terms=all&author=&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search)

There's a list of offensive words?

Why aren't all filtered?

There are degrees of severity. "Crap" is not considered particularly "bad." If something is filtered, the filter will catch it. If it's not, and you think it should be, let us know and we'll consider it.

I've noticed this for a while and never bothered to mention it but on the forum front page I always get error boxes in place of some of the images. Am I the only one like this or is this an ongoing issue to be resolved hopefully at some point? Just askin'.

Did a bit of research on the HTML, the problem seems to be with the resource itself missing in the folder or with its name having been changed, not with the code.

-Edit: Yep, it's the resource missing from the folder it's supossed to be in. (styles/hestia_blue/theme/images/feed.gif), here's the file if you need it --->Image <-----, and the full php stylesheet http://www.stsoftware.biz/phpbb30_style.hestia.html

Simply, the forum theme image called feed.gif is missing from its directory. I guess that's so even years before my registration on this forum.

I'm not sure how to get the post by itself, but to start the page at the specific post you can click on the little arrow in a circle to the left of the post's subject (ie: "Re: Ask A Moderator" on your post) and it takes you to the URL that starts at that post.

You can use http://housepetscomic.com/viewtopic.php?f=[forum number]&t=[topic number] followed by either &start=[post number] or &post=[post number].

The easiest way to link a post though, like Brent suggested, is just to use the little triangle in the top left corner of the post to get the direct URL to that post. ^^

That's odd. Have you tried running a virus scan? Perhaps do that and then clear the cache again and if it's still there then let us know and I'll get Rick/Inaki to check things server-side.
Is anyone else having issues like that?

This sounds like the issue that has happened a couple of times in the past where certain button images turned into something else. I can't find the one discussion where pictures were posted, but Roarin had it happen here.

Post Re: Ask A Moderator
Just for funsies, try right-clicking the demon face and selecting "Inspect Element (Q)". An extra panel will open at the bottom of the browser (never seen Pale Moon before) with a ton of HTML code, and one line will be highlighted in a light grey. It should be something like
Code:
<img title="Something" alt="SomeSuch" src="SomeURL.png_or_gif_or_something"></img>
or something like that. I want to know what it says.

Then I would like to know what all "div"s it is under. So (if you would) scroll up until you hit a "div" and if its arrow is not pointing directly sideways at the "div" but rather down to the right make a note of it. (You can click the arrow to collapse the HTML under it so things are less cluttered.) There shouldn't be more than like 3 or 4.

This may not help at all, but I'm curious where it's being placed. Cause it's not replacing an image that I can see like the other two incidents were.

I've seen that before! Not here but while coding, its an error in the sites CSS and since browsers don't always know what to so with such errors they treat certain variables as zero and odd things happen because of it
I don't keep images of errors tho sorry... Have you tried updating the browser? Or if not then try a different one, I use mozzilla personally bit that's just prerogative.

Well, each PM can have a maximum of five recipients so it could get confusing quickly with too many people in it.

May I ask why you don't want other people seeing this thread though?

Yo moderators, I got some questions. First, what exactly does the Subscribe link at the top of forums' and topics' pages do? There are some things I would like to be kept up to date about, but I don't want my email inbox filled up. this leads into my next question. my current system is to leave tabs open on topics permanently and I refresh the page to check for new posts. How long after I stop doing stuff does the system realize I'm AFK so to speak and remove the "online" tag from under my name for other people? in Discord you can mute channels. Is there a way, for example, to set it so The Comic forum doesn't tell me there are new unreads if someone posts in something that I'm not interested in like Wild Mass Guessing? Rick sometimes puts a link to the forum between a comics title and tags. When he doesn't, is there a good way to get to the topic for it in Old Comic Discussion? My strategies are to copy and paste the title into the search bar or to sift through the topics by last post date, neither of which is foolproof. Lastly, Is there an easy way to include a past comic in a post because it is already online or would I still need to copy it to photobucket first?

When you subscribe to a topic you'll get an email when somebody replied. But only on email per topic no matter how many replies there are until you read that topic again. You then get another email when there are new replies.

I'm not sure, but since that list is based on the active members of the last 5 minutes, I'd guess you're out of that list after about 5 minutes of inactivity.

I know of no way to 'mute' sections of the forums, maybe it's possible, but I dunno.

Not sure if there's a better way... I'd try to search for the title or the date.

Copy the direct link to the picture and then paste it into your post using the [img]-tags.

You can also sort the topics by "subject". Since they are (after arc 66) titled YYYY/MM/DD, you can pretty quickly get to a specific old comic (or arc for #66 and prior) discussion thread.

Sometimes when the server is glitching the message from your computer to the server gets through and the message posts but the message from the server back to your computer to say the post is there gets lost along the way. It's not usually a big deal but it can be annoying. If you need to add more information to the post you wrote, just click the "edit" button in the top, right corner of said post. If you've accidentally double posted and the extra info is in the later post then you can poke a mod and they'll delete the older post for you.

Post Re: Ask A Moderator
Yo moderators, I'm back. First, does The Dead Thread Bed exist out of necessity or transparency? That is to say, can threads not be destroyed easily after they are created so the Bed is a metiforical rug to sweep unwanted threads under or is it there so threads that are no longer relevant can still be viewed without cluttering up main forums? Possibly related to that, I noticed some people have black usernames with no profile link and some profiles say one number of total posts, but when you search user’s posts the number of results is smaller. Why is there the discrepancy?

Next, On the key at the bottom of any forum page there is a a separate symbol for new posts and for not new posts if they are "[ Popular ]". I can't tell any difference in the symbols. What does it actually mean? Also, whenever a new comic comes out, how is it decided who creates the topic? Do the mods have a schedule behind the scenes? Is it just the first person to create one? Can anyone do it?

Moving on, there is a small bug for me on the forum. Whenever someone posts on The Welcome Thread or when the current comic topic gets moved to Old Comic Discussion, the most resent set of posts in that thread revert to being labeled as "Unread". Is there something I'm doing wrong to cause this? This isn't that related, but I have a "two questions per paragraph" theme going. What is "project wonderful" on the bottom right side of the comic pages?

Onto the more technical questions about the forum. Where can I find a list of all the non-hexadecimal words (i.e. not stuff like #00FFFF) that can come after [color= that the website will recognize, like "blue" or "maroon"? Next, under the area to type out a post, there is a section to upload attachments. How does that work and what are the pros and cons compared to uploading to a 3rd-party site and using [img]*image url*[/img]? Going through another site seems like excessive work if there is that feature built in. Is there some downside like a limit on how many files an account can upload or is it as benign as the ability to have a picture anywhere in your post instead of at the end after the text?

Lastly, when looking for a post, is there a way to search for the plaintext of the post, i.e. being able to search for stuff like [color=#FF8000] or the url someone links to using the [url=] syntax, even if it requires some convoluted use of Advanced Google search? On the topic of searching, what are all the ways to find a specific strip. I know you can click ARCHIVE to see a list of names ordered by date, sorted by year; the select chapter drop-down lets you look at a list of the strips in an arc; typing while the drop-down is open will select the arc that starts with that, but they are named with the number at the start so typing in "psy" would not take you to "PsyCon" because it's filed as "-59. PsyCon"; clicking a tag takes you to a list of comics the've appeared in; editing the url to add other character names separated by + will refine the list to only ones where all the characters were in; adding something after the .com/ will take you to the latest strip that starts with that (the word "comic" specifically will take you to a list of every strip) and adding gibberish there will take you to a search bar that matches your search against titles of strips and the little notes Rick sometimes adds between the title and the tags that normally links to the forum. Is is possible to search for example by what text is in the strip or for strips where one character appears but another does not or for an arc by its name? If you read through all this congratulations, I didn't expect this to be so long. As always, if I stockpile another group of questions I'll be back.

Post Re: Ask A Moderator
I'll just answer the ones I know for now. :D

The Dead Thread Bed exists somewhat to retain history and somewhat to provide examples of what makes us decide to close a thread/what not to do. We can delete threads or move them into special hidey holes that the average user can't see if we deem necessary. This sometimes explains the discrepancy between a user's stated number of posts vs the number that will appear to you (there may be some that you can't access but we can). And some users in our history have asked to have their profiles removed, so their usernames are black.

The symbols at the bottom represent every possible symbol for threads that Rick can have in this version of phpBB, but not all of them are required to be different. Which is the long way of saying there is no difference between the symbol for "popular" threads and regular threads. (So please don't strain your eyes looking ;) ) As for the new comic thread, we've had a dedicated thread mod for a pretty long time (it's changed hands a few times). Our current thread person has had some recent life issues getting in the way of uploads, so the rest of us have been stepping in as we can. We do specifically ask that other users not try to create the thread to avoid competition.

I have a similar problem with posts being labeled read, and while I don't know what is causing it, it is almost certainly server-side. Project Wonderful is an advertisement site that Rick has been using since (basically) the dawn of time. :D

The rest I don't know, but I'll check it out a little myself cause I'm interested now ;)

Post Re: Ask A Moderator
Welcome back, Champion!

My turn now. Let's see how many I can answer.

1.) The Dead Thread Bed (DTB) is mostly for recording history. In some instances we move threads there as evidence for precedents for future moderator actions but generally anything that merits actual removal will be sent to an area that only moderators can access since, y'know, we remove stuff for a reason and we don't want it left where it can be seen by the public even if it's needed for evidence. The other advantage to the DTB is that if users have links to removed posts in their signatures or other posts then those links remain valid even when a thread is closed. If we deleted all the threads then we'd have broken links all over the place. So the DTB just helps keep things tidy in that regard.

2.) Black usernames mean an account has been deleted but the posts remain. Generally that's done because the user requested it before they left but every now and again we do delete accounts that have clearly been abandoned just to keep things tidy and to free up server space.

3.) Post counts. When a post is moved to the mods only area it'll still appear in the post count but won't be visible to non-moderators. That's the only reason, other than random bugs, which do happen, that I can think of why the count would be reduced. If the count is larger though, that's because posts in the Forum Games forum don't count in the listed total on the profile.

4.) A "popular" thread is exactly what it sounds like - a thread that people are posting in frequently. Just HOW frequently it must be posted in to be designated "popular" can be customised by the admins if they want. As Obbl said though, the design of the actual symbol isn't set in stone. Rick's just never bothered to customise it since no one on here has ever really asked for that feature and since we don't have a feed anywhere for popular topics. The fact that the icon is even listed there is just the default design of the forum style we use.

5.) The comic threads are almost invariably made by the mods of the comic section. We have a little template we use to speed things up. Occasionally Diss will make a thread or two ahead of time and save them in the mods-only area for us to move out on the day but that's usually only for special occasions or bonus strips. Also, occasionally the comic mods have to be AFK for one reason or another when the comic is posted and when that happens another mod will make the thread. We do ask that only staff members make the comic thread as this avoids duplicate threads and confusion and helps to keep the comic discussions in one neat place which makes moderation easier.

6.) I'm not quite sure I understand here. If someone makes a new post in any thread, including the Welcome thread, that thread will then show as "Unread" until you read it. As to the comic thread, my feeling is that that's because it's moved to a new forum so the software considers it as new posts in that forum. I don't think that would be an issue on your end. Sorry if it's causing trouble for you.

7.) "Project Wonderful" is an advertising service that Rick uses both to advertise Housepets and to allow other comics to advertise on the Housepets site. It was known as a very safe, reliable and cost-effective service and many webcomic creators used it. Sadly, due to changing internet trends and the rise of social media it's become financially unviable for that service to continue and it will be officially shut down on the first of August. It remains to be seen what Rick will choose to do to replace it but I can assure you that he'll make sure any new advertising service he uses will be as unobtrusive and safe as possible.

8.) As far as I know, the only option other than using hexadecimal after "[colour=" is "transparent", which, believe it or not, makes text transparent. I think you'd have to ask the creators of BB code if there are any other options, or program one yourself. Google could probably help with that. We don't have a list anywhere though, unfortunately. That said, you can use any hexadecimal colour codes you like and they'll work. The swatch to the right just shows the default web-safe ones.

9.) I don't know all the technical details of how attachments work unfortunately. There is a maximum file size which I think is 256kb but I could be wrong. Diss could tell you for sure if you asked him. Pros of our attachment service is that you can attach any file type and not just images, as far as I know, and that it's secure as you have to be logged in to the board to download the attachment. Cons are the limited file size and the fact that the software doesn't allow hotlinking to attachments. You can upload as many files as you like but it's a maximum of three files per post. Also, attachments can't be sent through PMs just for safety and security reasons. On a related note, you can put the [img] tags anywhere you like in your post, and if you press the "place inline" button which appears under the text box when you upload an attachment, you can make the attachment appear anywhere you wish in your post using the [attachment] tags.

10.) As far as I know, no, you can't search BB code. I don't think the search software takes that into account when searching. Also, if it did, then chances are you'd have far too many results, especially if searching for a colour tag.

11.) I think you've listed most of them. The other options would be a.) to search the forums for the thread relating to the strip you want and using the link from there and b.) Use "http://www.housepetscomic.com/?s=" and write your search topic after the = sign without using quotation marks. That should let you search the site. There was a search button on the old website but as the current site is still a work in progress that hasn't reappeared yet. Please bear with us and Rick will get to it when he can!

12.) I don't think you can search Rick's comments without using a boolean search on google, unfortunately. If you'd like a quick lesson on boolean then feel free to PM me or just to ask here. ^^

13.) Unfortunately you can't search the text in the strips itself because that text is part of the image and not saved as an overlay on top of it or anything. Again though, if you were skilled with programming, you could write an image-to-text tool that could search the website that way. As to excluding characters from searches, again, the only way to do that currently would be a boolean search on Google. Sorry about that.

I think that's answered everything. If not, feel free to ask again and if you have any more questions then do feel free to ask those too!

welp, I'm late and see if I can add anything to any of the answers
5.) there was a time when it was a free-for-all with all users to make the thread first. that stopped when we started making a separate thread for each comic.
for now the order of precedence is Diss if he makes it ahead of time, D-Rock, Obbl if he happens to not have class when Rock can't do it, then me cause I'm almost always able to get on at update time and others are either asleep or not awake yet. I don't think we've run into a spot recently where none of us four can do it, but we'd figure out beforehand if it did.

6) yeah, as far as i know, when a thread gets moved to a new forum all of it gets marked as unread. and if I get what you mean about the welcome thread, It is a global thread, meaning it's treated as if it's posted in every forum, so a new post marks all forums as unread. but you only need to look at it once and all the forums will go back to being read barring any new posts

7) he'll probably either use Google ads again, or depend entirely on Patreon, cause I believe Project Wonderful didn't actually get him much in the grand scheme of things.

9) I'm not sure of the limit on attachments, or if it's based on overall total or if it's based on a period (x attachments per year/month/day/post) but there definitely is one and I've hit it before. so the safest bet is using another site but if you don't attach that many things there's no harm in attaching til you can't attach no more :P

Alright, I should probably explain some of these questions. What I was getting at about the comic thread was what should we do in a case like this where the thread wasn't created until an hour and a half after the strip went up. Should we usurp the human leaders, poke a bear squirrel with a stick, or wait patiently? As an aside, how would Diss pre-creating the thread help that much? I haven't created any threads, but I would imagine transcribing the title and alt text and coming up with a witty response would take up more time than the rest of thread creation, and those can't be done until Rick releases the newest strip.

I guess I could've worded my question about unread posts better (aside from phrasing it "what can I do to prevent this?" instead of "why is it doing this" with the intent of working backwards from there). I don't have hard data so I'm going to make up an example: let's say I've read all the latest posts in The Welcome Thread, then someone creates an account and introduces himself there. On my screen, not only will the new introduction be marked as new, but all the posts I read from the previous person being welcomed will be suddenly marked as unread so if I click the "First unread post" link it will take me to stuff I've seen before so I have to scroll down and manually see what's new. If there is a new post, on the Board index it only turns the Announcements & Feedback forum red. When the comic thread is moved to Old Comic Discussion not all of the posts are marked as unread, just most of them.

In regards to the color options, what I really wanted to know is if there were any other special options you couldn't get with hexadecimal like "transparent". I figured if there was a non-color like transparent then there might be others out there. I don't have plans for anything like up-side-down text, I just like knowing all my options.

The main reasons I wanted to search the BBCode was to search "color=transparent" and to find posts where someone links to a given url, because if someone does [url=a website]blue words[/url] the search bar will only recognize the blue words and not the url. I figured the built-in search wasn't capable of this so I was wondering if it would be possible with a third-party engine like google.

I don't know what you mean by a boolean search (you should probably just explain that), but if I'm understanding you correctly searching for rick's comments was supposed to be an example of something I already knew how to do. http://www.housepetscomic.com/?s=friends will take you to a list that includes The Send Off because Rick included the word friend in his comment.

My reason for using "search[ing] by what text is in the strip" (aside from being really useful if possible) is I read on the forums once there was an effort to transcribe the comics into plain-text. I don't know if that ever got off the ground or came to fruition.

In the once in a blue moon case where a comic thread is not up for a while, we ask that you wait. It sucks, and we understand that and take great care to make sure you don't have to.

I don't have the problem with previously read posts being marked as unread in the Welcome Thread, but I do have it for the old comic threads. There shouldn't be any way it's a client side problem; it pretty much has to be server side, so there's almost definitely nothing you can do. We're on an old version of phpbb, because Rick is not a webmaster and doesn't like asking favors from our already very generous server sugar glider. That may be a factor. I only know that we don't understand what's happening, and it would probably be a long and involved investigation for anyone with the power. I assume it's unlikely to get fixed anytime soon, but we'll see.

I just tested all of the X11 color names and they all work (no spaces, capitalization is irrelevant). If that isn't enough color for you than I don't know what is :P
Edit: "Navy Blue" uses the alternative name "navy". Also minus the colors with "Web" in the name, and for some reason "cornflower" (use the alternative name "CornflowerBlue") and "light goldenrod" (use the alternative name "lightgoldenrodyellow")

As per Stack Overflow there's at least one free html search engine. I'm not sure how useful that would be. However, searching in the forum search for url=https://wikipedia turns up one result, so it does appear to search the bbcode.

Google's boolean search capabilities are listed here, and in particular the "site" operator has been of great use to me. ;)

There was an effort to transcribe the comics using Oh No Robot, but was volunteer based and didn't get much support or attention, so it fell to the wayside. No comics currently have a link to the Oh No Robot transcription. There is currently no way to search for in-comic text.

as Obbl said we ask you to wait and not make the thread, but do feel free to poke us if it's an update on an unusual day (off of the usual Monday Wednesday Friday schedule) because sometimes those are just because we didn't get the message that there would be an update and we can get it as soon as we find out.

as for pre-creating, the comics actually get uploaded to the site a bit in advance and only become publicly visible at update time. and Diss has access to those so he can see the comics before we do. so he handles all of those time consuming parts when he pre-creates them, right down to the link to the comic. we just have to move it to a publicly visible forum.
