Early attempts at a spin-off comic (which so far is unnamed)

Notice: The project is on the back-burner due to me having little time in between me trying to find a new job, amongst other things. I'll do what I can when I can, though.

What started with a simple sketch evolved into something I couldn't have imagined when I first started. Things have been a little less than smooth in my life, but I'm trying my best to keep at this project!

As usual, be prepared to claw your eyes out, because I don't claim to be a great artist. I'm only just learning, which is why I will always be ready to take any comments or criticism you have to offer. Please be constructive with your criticism, but make it good, hard criticism. If you don't point out my mistakes and flaws, how will I ever get better?

Feel free to start contributing character / plot ideas. Due to the overwhelming amount of shenanigans going on in my life at the moment, including but not limited to searching for a new job and moving into a new house, I have little attention to spread around these days (I haven't played a video game in a while @_@). Any ideas you'd like to throw at me for this project, I'll gladly look into, and will most likely incorporate into the project somehow!

Right now, Buddy needs to meet some new friends! If anyone has any character ideas, read this then HAVE AT IT! =)

Hehe, cold. I really like this, and would totally read it if Rick gave ya permission to make it. It's a bit hard to come up with much in the way of helpful criticism, since I can't see how well you'd do the colors. For the most part, all I can suggest is work on making your lines less jagged.

Thanks for the tip! I'll be sure to smooth them out if I end up lining it, and I'll get to the colors right after that. ;)

It looks really good if you ask me! Then again, I'm no artist, so my opinion doesn't amount to much in this case.

My only suggestion would be to work on the cats. Grape looks kinda doggy to me. Try to find the differences in how the cats and dogs are drawn, maybe? I don't know....

No, I totally agree with you, Copper. I drew Peanut in like 2 minutes, but then struggled with Grape for 15, eventually giving up and making her as catlike as I could before moving on.

I've drawn various dog drawings before, but like 2 cats. ^^;

Well, Stephen King always says that if you want to be a great writer, you have to write a lot. So in other words, practice makes perfect! Hang in there, Kirby ma boy!

Also, if you ever need any ideas for stories or jokes, I'm always willing to lend a hand. :)

OOH!OOH! Add me to the list. I have a drunken fairy who screams ideas into my ear all the time! I would love to get her off my back for a while.

I concur with the above statements, Kirby! I too, being not an artist, can't have a real 'technical' opinion, but this is AWESOME.
If you finish it, I promise I'll translate it and put it into my thread :D :D
Finish it, pleeeeeeease? *puppy eyes*

Thanks guys, I'll keep that in mind if I get this whole thing going. =)

I have a few ideas myself, but I'm bound to run out at some point. I usually have a really good one for here and a good one for there, but then nothing in between or after XD

Edit: I'll see what I can do, Valerio =)

Thank you, Kyderra. =)

Valerio, I'm sorry. I tried, I really did, but it is now rounding 3am and I only got half of the line art done. I can't stay up any later or else I will be dead at work tomorrow, but I promise I'll finish it later. =)

I've edited the first post to link to what I've done so far for the line art. I'll also link to it here.

Also, Copper - I took your advice into consideration and went through some of Rick's work to study Grape a bit more, and I ended up making a few modifications (mostly to the ears). Let me know what you think now. ^^

Peace out for now, Housepets fans. =)

Heh, Rome wasn't built in one day. Have a good night's sleep, take your time. I'm enjoying it so far, so where's the prob? :D

Limbo like me XD

Code: Select all

Well first of all...Grape kinda doesn't look like Grape. When I opened it on mah phone, my first thought were 'Okay...there's Peanut and....is that Fox?'' The ears just don't look....correct I'll say. I could say alot more if I could see the piccie and prums at the same time :P
But anyway, might be me, but I couldn't tell that was grape at all, looked more like a dog
Yeah, that's the same thing I keep thinking too - "Grape looks like Fox, darnit".
Well Kirby, doesn't look that bad to me. Even though Grape's ears are a bit longer..
Ears too long, huh? Let's see if I can't fix that.

Better than trying to draw at 3 ._.

Okay, I have made further changes to Grape, namely shortening her earns and 'snout'. Let me know if this helps cut back on the Fox/Chihuahua factor XD

It looks a lot better, but something is still off about Grape. I just can't seem to put my finger on it, though. She looks really good! I think whatever is still off about her will iron itself out as you draw cats more.

I definitely see an improvement...Grape now looks like Grape.

You should try a guest strip! Your art is certainly good enough to be seriously considered.

Yeah, I'll get it eventually. After all, the whole purpose of this little project is for me to learn to draw this kind of style, so I'll have to work towards it! ^^

Hmm... I think their tags are too small. You should draw them bigger.

Wait, in Canada are iglos? :o

Nice catch, Karlos. I'll be sure to make the tags a bit bigger.

And no, there aren't igloos or dogsleds in Canada, nor do we say "aboot" or "eh". Not for the last seventy years, at least... but many Americans still think we do! XD

===

I'm home now, an hour late and feeling the beginnings of a flu creeping up on me, so I'm going to try and get this done before I'm bed-ridden. ><

Updated tag sizes, fixed Grape in the second panel, and added snow to panel 3. =)

Your finished product exceeds all expectations. You are to send in a guest strip upon completion of said comic. If not, we will be forced to apply the worst punishment possible. PMs

Just kidding. I really think this is a great drawing/ comic. You are very close to Housepets style. What more can I say?

Another sketch!

Okay, this one was a bit harder to do, because a) I have never really put an honest attempt into a background before (so it sucks) and b) I really didn't have anything to reference for this character. Definitely doesn't look as good as the first sketch I did, but maybe you all can help me improve with some advice/critique.

Comic Sketch

Also C) I have never tried drawing ANYTHING from behind before. Woe is me.

Also also, I know the hands/arms are terrible, I started rushing as I have to sprint for the bus to work now. Later!

Kinda looks like Bino to me. However, I don't think you give yourself enough credit. The panel structure is great, drawing the viewer in and getting them to wonder what's up and what the character is waiting for, all without a single line of dialog. I like.
