Icons and smilies

Post by Argent »

This thread is similar to the Avatars one, it's for people to post links to little inline smilies and icons like Image ...

I got a PM with a link to a thread about this.

@Furryfox: If you're here from the 4/15/2013 comic thread, here's my reply:

What I'm going to do is 'dismantle' a post that has these HP smilies in it.

(quote="Hukley")Yay! More King and Bailey (img) http://i1327.photobucket.com/albums/u67 ... 810886.png (/img)

(quote="Gbr23")Drinking Organge soda ... it's a little early, don't ya think?(/quote)

It's never too early for an orange soda (img) http://i1327.photobucket.com/albums/u67 ... 7277ee.png (/img)(/quote)

Ok, so essentially what we have are links to tiny images that someone has uploaded into a gallery on a page. Now for a bit of tweaking:

If you take:
http://i1327.photobucket.com/albums/u67 ... 810886.png

and make it:
http://i1327.photobucket.com/albums/u67 ... 0Emoticon/

you can copy
http://i1327.photobucket.com/albums/u67 ... 0Emoticon/
into your URL address bar. When I click Go I get:

http://s1327.photobucket.com/user/Rende ... t=4&page=1

which is basically all the different emoticons that were posted here.

Now since I'm not the owner of the gallery I linked to, I can't recommend that you link to each one of those images. But, since the emoticons were posted in said link above, what I can recommend is that you download them from said thread, and then create your own gallery somewhere that you can link to. I have a Deviant Art page myself, and I'll probably end up doing that.

Unfortunately that icon pack is for Messenger, and the icons themselves may go away if they're heavily used... he doesn't recommend linking to them from the forums.

Perhaps they can be transferred to IMGUR or Deviant Art or Flickr so they're more permanent. Ideally would be to have them hosted on Housepets (housepetscomic.com), but Rick has indicated he doesn't want to do that.

Sorry about my bad timing. To repeat what I said in the edit, I'll probably download the icon pack and then upload each icon onto my Deviant Art account, and then just link to them when I want to use them.

Question for mods who are watching: Do you see any legal troubles over this? I have seen it stated that Rick doesn't mind people using his artwork for avatar pictures and things, but are image hosting websites going to have problems with it, especially if users upload each icon as part of a gallery of 50+ images? To them, it still is copyrighted material, so...

EDIT: I've downloaded the 48x48 icon image pack. It took about two seconds to download. Now to upload each image into Deviant Art... after I find out about legalities...

As far as I know, image hosting sites do not trawl through the millions of pics stored there looking for copyright infringements, and don't have a habit of removing images unless they are asked via DCMA takedown notice, etc. Many banners on the forums are hosted at such sites and have been for a number of years with no incidents, so I doubt it would be an issue.

I believe the mods are OK with using icons like these so long as they don't break the lines too much (i.e. keep them about the height of the current smilies).
