Re: Avatars I don't remember how I did the first one, but the second one is just a layer effect- stroke. Apparently GIMP can't do this fresh out of the "box", but you can find some plug-ins by searching "GIMP layer styles" or "GIMP layer effects". Depends on the background. If it's a flat color, then a magic wand type thing (to select all pixels of a particular color) is pretty easy. Otherwise it take a bit of eraser-work.

I know he's not the one of the more popular characters because he is a villainous human but he has a thick, manly mustache ...and larceny gloves.  Say, would Thomas ever make for a good Bond villain, one of the Bond villain's goons, or neither of them?
