Re: Another bit of fanart

Post by Alex »

The problem with my drawing is that I can't draw symmetric things correctly. E.g. if I want to draw a house, of which both sides are the same, I'd end up drawing a house with 2 completely different sides. I can't copy my own length and angles from one side to another. And a lot of things are symmetric in nature, including most animals, and humans.

Wow, way to quote my biggest issues verbatim.

Shaky hand- huge problem of mine. You should see my handwriting. It's atrocious; even I have trouble reading it sometimes. But, this issue is fairly easily remedied by doing short sketchy lines instead of long flowing ones. Takes some getting used to, but is easy once you do.

Overthinking- well, I still haven't quite fixed that one, but I just try to focus on the big picture- "No one will notice this tiny little bit when I have the whole thing drawn up," "I will be much better if I can just accept these flaws for now while I practice, and eventually will be able to hammer them out when I get more skilled," "At least I'm putting an effort forward instead of bemoaning my inability." (That last one gets me with almost everything I try to do, but luckily it only takes about twenty minutes for a rough sketch, as opposed to weeks of, say, working out to see a result.)

Symmetry- I'm terrible at it. Just look at the picture at the top right of the page- nothing matches up; it drove me crazy; it took about thirty more minutes after I was finished only because I was fretting so much over making it perfect. But, you barely notice it if you're not looking. It's exactly like the overthinking thing: you just have to force yourself to work through it, and when the whole thing is done even you won't pay any attention to it.

Just sit down with a notebook and a mechanical pencil and force yourself to sketch whatever it is for an hour. Do different views of it, fill up a page, anything. Tell yourself you aren't going to fret over the little details, and you might find you're much better than you originally thought, and just maybe start to enjoy it. I never got why people found so much pleasure in doodling on their school papers, but I've been doing it for days now.

Hehe, Peanut's all tuckered out >_> too much Bobby Flay.
Your drawing actually isn't that bad. The composition is an important part of drawing, and here you've set it up greatly. Coming from a fellow artist though, the torso looks a tad big compared to the arms and legs (which is funny because people often say I draw them too skinny. I still need work on that -_-'), and maybe the head as well, but besides that everything else looks fantastic :D

Indeed.

For your first try, is not that bad, just the legs and the arms are too short.

And the torso is just fine.

This forum has such good artists, they makes me want to doodle too. Its very contagious :D
In fact it makes me feel like I'm walkin' on sunshine

P.S. Did I say doodle? I meant tracing, :? It helps force me to draw them correctly for a change... aside from the parts I drew >_>

Jeez, how's a guy supposed to get anything done in such a positive environment? It's so oppressive- I feel like I'm being crushed!

And Twig, if it weren't for you, I wouldn't have even tried. Your "Star-Crossed" illustration is actually what made me want to start.

Congratulations, your awesomeness level has increased by 10!

The only bad part about that picture are their paws on their legs.....

You're lucky you don't attend my Art class. My current teacher takes an uncanny delight in pelting you with criticism fashioned with a display of callous disregard for your self esteem that could drive anyone away from being creative -_-'

@Alex: Really? The paws? How do I respond to that? They're paws. AUGH.
Just kidding, I appreciate the opinion, it helps me to learn things that I have not yet learned.

I'm perfectly fine with supporting other people's couplings (even Ebly's >.>) even if i am a heavy Grape/Maxwell supporter. i'm good natured!

Just generally bad art in short. if you draw any of the HP cast and it doesn't look the same, i could offer some pointers =)

Thanks for the kind words, but as much as I would like to ignore the guy, that sort of thing won't fly too well in a college class. Its fine though, its common for most art classes, but it varies (with each project we sit around in a circle and all critique one person at a time). Truthfully, getting better at your craft does depend on a fair amount of criticism, its just a matter of whether or not you can handle it. Anyway, I hope you continue to develop your drawing skills.
