Post Furries... your opinion:
I'm kinda amazed no one has brought this topic up in a forum of a well-known furry webcomic. anyway i wonder what y'all think about the fandom and stuff.

It's not that it hasn't been brought up before, it's just that nobody really cared enough to make a topic on it. Evidently this is not the case anymore given there is a topic now so yeah

ending post now

Post Re: Furries... your opinion:
No it's not that! It's just that people tend to have discussed it vaguely while off-topic in other topics and it hasn't been put into a topic of its own because people tend to get it out in a few posts and go back to topic.

I think more people will come in here, with more opinions! I can't give much, given that the closest I come to it is a whole bunch of affiliations. No matter what other people think, I do not associate myself with furry... ness? Still. I do not consider myself a furry, even if I am more in tune with it than I really ought to be of ever wanted to be.

To be honest the only thing I dislike about the furry fandom is, well, the furry fandom. The people in it are generally okay and are not really any different to other people. (Note, generally.) I just tend to not like whole attitude it's kind of garnered on a whole - people stop acting like actual people. Forget they're humans in reality. It can be quite sad. People like Zeru and Buck and Dylan I am fine with - that is, I chose those three as my example, because they are all very different personally from my experience. The reason I am fine with them is because they act, you know, like a real person. That's the connecting element between those three. They're not some furry, they're an actual person who happens to be a part of the furry fandom, if that makes any sense without being insulting? It's not like it's the furry fandom alone that has such a problem (because there are some people that will end up like that no matter what they're into), though it is rife given the whole thing where you guys are 'anthropomorphised animals' which tends to create a bit of an emphasis on the animal thing (though the way I see it is that most of them are anthropomorphised to the degree where the only difference to a human is fur, ears, and a tail anyway).

Um, okay, that was more of an opinion than I thought I'd be expressing, but oh well. :V

Post Re: Furries... your opinion:
i can see where you're coming from.

as for me, i have always had an interest and fascination with animals, anthropomorphic or realistic, as long as i could remember, so therefore i consider myself a furry. in real life, i do nothing about it. i dont go to cons, i dont fursuit, i dont draw, i dont have a fursona (but i was thinking of developing a persona for the lulz), and i believe including furries in my poetry is a horrible idea (ideas and poetry dont ever go together, poems are made from words says my professors). frankly i am disgusted by how many people act in the fandom and how awkward they are. i feel at times that because of the inclusionary nature of furry, it tends to let in people who force themselves to be interested just so they can find social acceptance. also, faving I flunked middle school on FA is a little creepy for obvious reasons.

i dont have to worry about that cause i have other interests (indie rock, literature, hipsterism, politics) and plenty of friends (about 700 on facebook, and a solid 10-20 i hang out with regularly). most of my friends dont know because there's no point in telling them, and they would get the wrong idea probably. (if that sounded a little braggy, i apologize.)

also, as a straight guy, it is really infuriating how few women there are in the fandom (but thats cause girls aren't as open about unpopular choices as guys are. seriously at the atheist club i go to at college there are like 15 guys and 1 girl, and the trend is nation-wide). i don't mean for that to sound sexist at all, but it was just an observation.

as for the whole animal superiority thing, thats bull in my opinion. i am a human. sometimes i wish i wasnt cause of the whole ITS SIMPLER thing, but i know that were i any other creature on this planet i'd still be as stressed out and unsatisfied as i am now. in fact, im grateful that i am a sentient creature with analytical thought.

i hope i sounded human ;-)

The definition of furry/what it means to be furry/anthro or what have you.

There have been many arguments around this, with many different sides. The simple fact of the matter is that everyone seems to define what is "furry" to them, differently.

What is furry is nothing more than a varying opinion. For example, someone might call loony toons furries, someone might call werewolves furries. Others would certainly disagree.

So! From this we can deduct the following: If you think you're a furry, or define yourself as a furry, then you are one. If you don't, then you aren't one.

Myself? I define my being as a human and a furry. Wrap your head around that.

Well i can tell you that way back when furry fandom started the original rules of what was a furry were.
#1, It must have fur.
#2, scalies have always been there, dragons were around before furry started so got grandfathered in.
#3, Humans are NOT furry, an thanks to a US Supreme Court ruling.. "Sticking cat ears an tails on a human does not make them funny animals" in it's ruling that Omaha the cat dancer was/is human I flunked middle school.
#4, Anime animalish characters "cat girls an dog boys" were furry, because they often act like the animal there representing. they Hiss, claw, meow an groom themselves. InuYasha growls, barks, and gets down on allfours to track by scent.
#5, Were-creatures were furry.

That was it.

I have been a furry before there was a fandom, I used the blackmoor supplement to D&D so i could play a werewolf! :)
an constructed my first half-fursuit in 1978.
yes i'm Oooold! i currently have 3 surviving fursuits, flyingfox, dog, an fennic fox

Everyone knows that i'm a furry, family, friends, co-workers. (I have even fursuited at work before :P) as well as having fursuited in parade's, through shopping malls, an restaurents.

I ran a furry FIDO linked BBS, before the internet allowed furry to become a global community.
I have attended, an help run several furryCons. usually doing AV/stage, or as actor/performer/director of the stage shows.

Furry is what you make of it.. it can be a lot of work, an a lot of fun.

T.V Media kinda destroyed the world view on Furry's, so you will always get a frowning eyebrow from some one.

i just think that anthrpromorphic carton animals are adorable and fun to draw. thats it. so i'm probably not "furry" I honestly don't think much about that stuff, but i guess that if i had to say something it would be this.
While the label furry still hasn't become a synonim for bad, like gay, anything that comes across as weird, or how most people would automatically interperet it "sick and f#cked up" has the unfortunate potential to become imfamous (like i said, alot of people have still never heard of it brfore, like me before one of my friends mentioned it around the time that i first started churning out drawings) I like most of the art that comes out of it, save a few sort of extreme ones, mostly because i love animals (dogs cats foxs wolves, any thing) so my opinion is pretty much neutral :|

True on the T.V. Media thing. I've been given a hard time for being a furry by some people, but that's life. At least most of my fellow workers have gotten used to it, and my tail (yes, I wear a tail. All the time too).
Anyway, I always love furry comics, espesialy fun ones like Housepets. I could nome a few others, but no.

i have heard in that newish BBC article that there may be such a thing as species identity disorder. its like transsexualism but people believe they were born into the wrong species rather than the wrong gender. i wonder how many furries feel like that....

my philosophy is that humans are animals. we may have a higher dominion, but we still lack what other animals have: strength, keen senses, sensitivity to magnetic fields, the ability to detect natural disasters. they have those abilities, but they can't think to manipulate their world (for the most part) or create art. these differences balance each other out, so in the end, humans are no better or worse than any other animal.

i can also say that i am literally furry because i have copious amounts of body hair. i am the hairiest guy i know, and i have been called furry before (while laughing in my head at how dead on they are without knowing it  ).

also, funny enough, the friends that do know im a furry are GOONS!!! and one was in ANON!!! im not kidding, they really didn't care whatsoever.

I'm a furry because I love Sean Connery James Bond.

....

Seriously though, while I have been in "denial" for the past year or so, I've finally realised I'm a furry, weather I like it or not.

Although I'm not a furry in the sense I want to be an animal, I'm quite happy with being human. I'm more of a furry in the sense of that I love Animals, And Anthropomorphic Animals even more.
so while I'll probably never wear a fursuit, I'll be happy to look at the huge amount of people dressed up as Foxes or what have you.

Also the joke is that Sean is really really hairy

Post Re: Furries... your opinion:
Ooh, better add to this before it dies. (It probably won't for awhile, but, oh well)

As I've said before, I don't consider myself a furry; I have no real preference between humans in what I read and animals, and I've never thought I had an animal in me (I've wanted wings before, but that was after playing the Aion beta test for too long :P ). However, I am a Japanese culture fan, and those kind of go hand in hand. sorta. That being said, I have been "accused", for lack of better word, of being a furry, mostly because I'm not very secretive about being a member of this forum. I like the comic, and I like the forum, so I go on when I'm bored at school, but the negative connotations that are linked to the furry fandom are impartial. Not that I mind, but it can get annoying.

In my opinion, it's just another interest to a certain group of people, and there's nothing wrong with it, as long as you don't take it too far (referring to the I flunked middle school of the FA). I get a litte grief for my interest in Anime and Manga (probably not nearly as much as some of y'all get for being furries), but hey, that's life; people are willing to judge, unfortunately. It's not like I haven't unfairly judged before; I'm not happy to say I have, but I won't deny it, either. When you have an extreme in a situation, some people outside of the group just immediately believe everyone who's involved in the group to be that extreme, and stereotypes are formed; I've dealt with this just as a Christian. But, to me, being a furry isn't a bad thing at all, as long as you don't use it to be obscene.

i wouldn't say anime and furries go hand in hand. i dislike most anime and i even sort of made fun of the kids in my school who were into is (THEY LIKED NARUTO OKAY!). and for the record, i don't have a problem with I flunked middle school, i just think its weird to fan it. if anything, fan the artist and then watch the I flunked middle school.

obscenity is tied to the furry fandom like a witch to a stake, and everyone wants to watch it burn. im okay with the weird stuff in the fandom as long as you keep it to yourself. otherwise, i think i have every right to judge someone for being a diaperfur.

also, cub I flunked middle school is child I flunked middle school. its revolting and we should kick those people off of FA... again *shudders*.

even if i were totally open with people about my furriness, i am sure i'd get less slack for that than i would my hipsterness, but that's a different subculture with its own stigma, and its much more hated (FOR GOOD REASON).

btw, i'm not really a hipster, i just get called it.

this post was more scatterbrained than Radiohead's Hail to the Thief

I DO NOT WATCH NARUTO. I WILL NOT SUBJECT MYSELF TO THAT LOAD OF BULL HONKEY. But what I meant by that is that you often see Neko in Japanese media, to the two can be linked in someone's mind, but aren't always.

Lol, sorry, I really wasn't that offended. I have a way of being dramatic when I'm trying to be funny. As for Neko, have you ever seen an anime character with fox ears and a tail? That's Neko.

I love the group of friends I have.
You can tell them anything and they just go "m'kay"
... might be the reason why I have a T-shirt with the text " If you think i'm strange you should see my friends"

I am an anthro artwork fan.

I used to call myself a furry. However, I was constantly feeling butthurt because so many trolls make fun of the fandom because of its stereotypes, and also because I'd run into enough furries to know how sadly justifiable those stereotypes are. Eventually, I stopped identifying as a furry, so I would stop feeling the need to get defensive and become a furry apologist of sorts every time someone, like my mother, misunderstood fandom, and thought I was gross or whatever. While I have a very select few furry friends online, I still kinda dislike the fandom, having gone through more dramatic crap therein than I would care to discuss in detail on a publicly-accessible forum.

In the end, "furry" is a very ambiguous label with different connotations to different people, while "anthro artwork fan" is not. "Anthro art fan" is a label I can wear as proudly as I wear my "logic puzzle fan/composer" and "8-bit chiptune fan/composer" labels.

the trick to not getting butthurt is to not take the trolling seriously. if they call you a fur***, that's not anything to get upset over. if they say "*insert valid constructive criticism*," then take the criticism. they are not serious about it, and if they are serious (ie they yell at you in person), then tell them "YOU ARE TAKING THIS FURSECUTION TOO SERIOUSLY!"

and wolvenpaw, if your gf broke up with you over that, that was very shallow of her and she wasn't worth your time.

and now i know what neko is... whatever sounds sort of stupid to me.

its many things to many people, i'd say the Encyclopedia Dramatica article is pretty accurate if you take it with a pinch of salt. CrushYiffDestroy also has an even better, lulz free history of the furry fandom, so check those out if you are curious :-)

In a sense, changing my label has allowed me to take the furry fandom less seriously. :)

The first times I came in contact with anthropomorphic fiction were due to works like the Anders trilogy and The Ballad of Lost C'Mell. Then I discovered online this whole furry fandom, which seemed to be different from it, though. I thought and still think being a furry has a sexual component, therefore I don't consider myself one. Katt and C'Mell are different types of fictional characters than e.g. Zig-Zag.

Don't get me wrong, the above paragraph isn't intended to be read as judgingly nor do I want to offend somebody by means of generalization, it's merely my take on answering ye olde question of what defines a furry.

EDIT: I might as well add my two cents.

I'm furry to the extent that my preferred roleplay characters are furries/scalies/the like, and I enjoy furry webcomics and cartoons a lot more than more not-furry ones, on average. Sure I'd love to be a squirrel (Or a DND kobold <3), but I'm perfectly happy as a human and despite roleplaying as a furry or using a fursona I'm perfectly aware of my lack of tail and fur. Ebly mentioned earlier that his only complaint about furries is the fandom, and that's pretty much the same for me. A lot of us, I've noticed, or at least the more vocal of us, can be really, really stupid. :v HeCK, most of the furries I'm close friends with hate the fandom at large/on the surface.

like me! HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE, so full of hate. it's hard to be intellectual about something so anti-intellectual by nature (it involves wanting to be an animal, which is like saying i hate to think

But I can safely say, that we as people, given the the *fudged* up hobbies we've made, should not have the right to say that furries are weird.

yeah stamp collecting is strange, or collecting in general. and people who know NFL draft statistics FREAK ME OUT!

Yes you have a point very shallow and I hate her because she is trying to make her friends who are also my friends stay away from me and gets mad when they don't but thats my life not the fandom. When did the term Fur*** come about?

i have no clue, but these days a *** is not a gay person, rather someone who is waaaay too open about their interests and gets offended when you don't like that interest. in that case, i would be a fur (since i can take the criticism and joking), and all the whiny emo kids who wear collars in public and get run a marathon if you make fun of them are the fur***s.

i don't think anyone here is a fur*** from what i've seen.

Judging by the popularity of its usage I'd guess channers came up with it. But thankfully a lot of furries instead adopted the term and use it amongst themselves :v I know I call some of my furry pals fur***s all the time, and vice versa.

i see it as a term of affection, like how black people took back the n-word.

language should never offend people, only the content and intent of the language should.

indeed, on urbandictionary (love that website)

#2 definition of the word F*g

1. An extremely annoying, inconsiderate person most commonly associated with Harley riders.
2. A person who owns or frequently rides a Harley.
" Look at that *** riding that Harley."
"Why are these *** always so loud."

===========
#1 definition of furry
Possibly the strangest sub-culture in all of geekdom. Furries range from being harmless fans fascinated by anthropomorphic characters and animals, to immensely withdrawn or self-abosrbed persons who actually believe, or want to believe, they're eagle-winged fox-like versions of themselves with giant (EDIT EDIT EDIT) who wouldn't dare be anything else that could be considered mundane. Furries defy any coventional or unifying definition.

i wouldn't say anime and furries go hand in hand. i dislike most anime and i even sort of made fun of the kids in my school who were into is (THEY LIKED NARUTO OKAY!). and for the record, i don't have a problem with I flunked middle school, i just think its weird to fan it. if anything, fan the artist and then watch the I flunked middle school.

obscenity is tied to the furry fandom like a witch to a stake, and everyone wants to watch it burn. im okay with the weird stuff in the fandom as long as you keep it to yourself. otherwise, i think i have every right to judge someone for being a diaperfur.

this post was more scatterbrained than Radiohead's Hail to the Thief

totally agree

edit

I have NEVER met any one in person ever, who was a fury. And at my school, things get around pretty quikly so i'm sure that i would have known. Of course, where i live almost no body even knows what furry means.

I know how that one is. :D Some of my own fur-pals call me a fur*** now and then.
But there's no point in getting all but hurt when someone calls you that in public as an insult. Never bothered me, and never will. Those peoplle most likely have weirder issues than just being a fur.
Not saying I don't have issues. I have them (and boy do I) but that's life. We're all a little weird and crazzy in our own way. Just...no vore for me please...uck.

Correction, someone from UD stole that from Southpark :D

And no one around where I live knows I'm a furry, mostly cos none of them would get it, and it'd prolly end up worse than if I came out as bi. You may be surrounded by furries and not even know it! >:D

correction, they didn't still steal, they embraced it. (updating the dictionary for it)
it's by user vote that it is now considered officially through about the word.

I'm no furry, but I see no problem with furries. It's whatever you like. Though, I don't like the "extremist" furs, if you will. The one's who think they are die-hard animals, and use the term "Bic ballpoint pen" way too often. And they also "nuzzle" each other, and lick each other, and purr at each other and what not.
