WHAT ON EARTH HAPPENED!?!

Okay, this may just be due to the fact that I'm living a rather sheltered life, but can somebody please tell me what happened at a marathon? Because I have no clue.

Some sick piece of crap set off two "pressure cooker" bombs. Who ever it was set four but two failed to detonate. No one has been caught yet but the investigation is ongoing. 3 people were killed and many more injured.

Two improvised explosive devices were set and detonated near the finish line of the 117th Boston Marathon. Three spectators were killed and more than 170 others were injured. Dozens had at least one leg amputation, either by shrapnel, during the blasts, or later, as a medical intervention. Contrary to initial reports, the Federal Bureau of Investigation indicates only the two detonated bombs were found.

A family friend of ours was at that marathon. We think he's alright, but still...
There were children there affected. That's just what gets to me the most.
