Please read the rules, located at the bottom of this post.

List of HP related channels:

#Sun - Chatroom for Sunset Plateau, a neighborhood in "Pet Friendly".

In addition to the forums, We have our own chat room, the channel #Housepets on irc.gamesurge.net. For those unfamiliar with IRC, here's how you can join, using mIRC:

1. Download and install mIRC from http://www.mirc.com
2. Create an account on http://www.gamesurge.net (Optional)
3. Verify your email and take note of your password (Optional)
4. Run mIRC and type the following commands:
  • /server irc.gamesurge.net
  • Wait until you're connected to the server.
  • /authserv auth username password (replacing "username" and "password" with your values if you registered above) You should get an automatic response indicating "-AuthServ- I recognize you."
  • /join #Housepets
You DON'T have to register mIRC! Once the 30 days trial has expired, you can still use the program, but you'll have to wait a short amount of time before the "Continue" button lights up.

I was also informed that those of you using MIRC you can just open irc://irc.gamesurge.net/housepets in your browser to join.

Connecting to the IRC using ChatZilla (The firefox plugin) [Thanks to Ilovehousepets for the instructions]
1. Open ChatZilla
2. Type the command: /attach irc.gamesurge.net
3. Once your in, type /join #Housepets

And that's it.

If you can't install mIRC or want to visit #Housepets without downloading additional software, visit http://www.gamesurge.net/chat.

And for those that want an even more simple way go here: http://mibbit.com/?channel=%23Housepets ... esurge.net

Enjoy, and we hope to see you all there!

Channel Rules:
  • Come as you are. Outside of role playing, there's no reason for you to assume a false persona. Be honest about yourself. It should go without saying that this includes impersonation. This also includes sockpuppeting. Don't create multiple accounts to support a contrarian point of view.
    • This includes your name, its alright to have more than one persona, but constantly switching between them, especially if the names are completely different, makes it very difficult to keep track of who you are. Using your forum name is preferred, but not necessary.
  • No advertising other channels, or creating branches of the main channel to suit your own needs. Doing so is completely unnecessary as well as the fact that it draws away from the community itself.
  • Do not evade de-voicing or bans. If we remove your ability to send messages to the channel, do not circumvent that. If you leave the room and come back to regain your voice, you will earn a ban. If you have been banned and try to come back before you're supposed to, your ban will become permanent.
  • Do not flood the channel. Sending multiple messages without allowing others to reply is annoying and does nothing to further the conversation. You will be de-voiced if this occurs.
  • Keep it clean! The profanity filter has lots of words in it. Trying to evade the filter counts against you. To be safe, if you're going to self-censor, completely obliterate the word with asterisks.
    • Recently, some words have been removed from the bot to keep the channel at a more PG-13 level. While it is... ok to use these words, it is not ok to abuse them or use them in any kind of defamatory manner.
  • No Flaming. Do not openly attack, insult, belittle, or abuse another user. You will be de-voiced if this occurs; you will be banned on grounds of harassment if this appears to be chronic.
    • Harassment towards other members via PMs will also result in a devoice. Chronic action will result in a ban. If we find out you are still harassing Housepets members via PMs while banned, we will have no choice but to alert GameSurge operators, which may result in your hostmask being banned from GameSurge itself.
  • No Mini-Modding. Attempting to call out a rule-breaker by citing the rules is annoying. You will be de-voiced if this occurs. If an op is in the channel, send them a PM in case they are away or have not noticed the issue.
    • Do not gang up on someone if they are breaking a rule. You break one or more rules by doing so.
  • No Trolling. Any topic or response purposely intended to incite flames WILL result in a ban. Even if you attempt to have a "serious" conversation, and bend or tiptoe around the rules as a result, this counts as trolling.
    • Use common sense. If people are obviously discomforted by your topic of conversation, change it.
  • Type coherently. Since we communicate entirely through the written word here, we have to be able to understand each other. This means, among other things, no chat speak.
Not for Discussion:
The following items are not appropriate for the channel and will result in disciplinary action.
  • Current politics, religion, and other potentially controversial issues outside of the context of the comic, especially as far as it pertains to creating an environment in which to flame others for their viewpoints.
  • Drugs or criminal activity, including obtaining mp3s, movies, or computer programs illegally.
  • Keep intimate displays of affection to a minimum! Most of the cuddling and licking and stuff makes us look really furry. It's awkward for the non-furries, and can make some groups of people look exclusive as well as scaring people away. Remember, #Housepets isn't exclusive to furries alone! Glomping, hugging, and mild things like those are okay. Intimate displays of affection should be avoided.
  • No shipping! While many shipping discussions start out silly and fun, they can quickly degenerate into arguing and creepiness.
  • No solicitation. Do not send messages requesting donations. The channel is not here for you to advertise your products or services and while we can sympathize with those who are down on their luck, you should seek assistance elsewhere.
  • Respect the ops and their decisions. If you want to know why an action was taken, feel free to PM the op with any questions. If their answer doesn't satisfy you (or you think it's unfair), you may ask another op for a second opinion. However, you should not make a big scene in public and disrupt the flow of conversation. Doing so will result in being de-voiced.
  • The rating of this channel is PG-13 at maximum. That means, while it is okay to mention sex, it is not okay to be explicit about it, nor to discuss it in context of specific characters, NOR is it okay to discuss explicit violence in the same manner. Talking about sites that deal with pornography is not allowed, and linking to them will result in a warning. Linking to images with explicit sexual or violent content WILL result in a ban.
  • None of the above can be discussed in any capacity on the forum, comment box, or any other board or chat room endorsed and moderated by this forum or a representative of this forum (to the extent they are acting within their capacity as a representative of this site), nor can discussion or arrangement of said activities be advertised within these areas or directly connected with Housepets in any manner.
Being here is a privilege, not a right. Your account may be suspended over matters of instigation (arranging DDoS, troll baiting) against this site and any attempt to use the chat as recruitment for any illegal or other activity against the rules of this forum, including creating and advertising for boards, chat rooms, and Web sites solely for the purpose of defaming or subverting the rules of this forum and chat, even if the activity was private or did not occur on the forum itself.
(These are still being updated and revised.)

Oooh lovely! Though. I was hoping that maybe some day we'd migrate to a better server. One that's not for gaming. Is this never happening?
Edit: Also, maybe, a list of IRC capable programs(and websites) should be included. Instead of just mirc.

Hey guys! for those of you with ChatZilla, FireFox's IRC Plug-in, here's how to get in.

1. Open ChatZilla
2. Type the command: /attach irc.gamesurge.net
3. Once your in, type /join #Housepets
4. ???
5. Profit.

It's just that simple, and all for the affordable price of free, and afterwards you can edit the settings to make it so that everytime you start up Chatzilla, it takes you to the Housepets! IRC.

Well. I was banned yesterday, for what was later resolved and agreed to be a misunderstanding, by dissension. He was going to unban me after an hour, but he told me he was unable to do so for some reason, and he asked rojo, but rojo didn't want to unban me. (yet?) It's been a day now, and I'm still banned. Um.

Well, you were told previously that you'd be permanently banned for future infractions and did not disagree that the original issue (making controversial political statements) would be sufficient grounds for a ban. Whether you will be unbanned is at Rojo Ninja's discretion as owner of the channel, ultimately.

I agreed that it should be avoided, But I disagree that it should be the basis for a ban, especially if it's 1. unintentional 2. resulted in nothing bad occuring. I didn't agree completely.

After much deliberation:

You were not fully banned for making negative political statements. Dissension advised for you to not talk about it. You then proceeded to question him publicly in the channel as to why you were in the wrong. Dissension then explained to you what you did, and you continued to argue with him.

"Current politics, religion, and other potentially controversial issues outside of the context of the comic, especially as far as it pertains to creating an environment in which to flame others for their viewpoints."

There's a reason we don't allow this type of discussion to take place. Your opinions and beliefs are fine, but you never know if someone will take offense to it and react negatively to it. These types of conversations and statements are well-known and prone to starting flame wars. It's always best to stay away from them.

"Respect the ops and their decisions. If you want to know why an action was taken, feel free to PM the op with any questions. If their answer doesn't satisfy you (or you think it's unfair), you may ask another op for a second opinion. However, you should not make a big scene in public and disrupt the flow of conversation. Doing so will result in being de-voiced."

When a moderator requests you to do something, you do it. If you have a problem with them, you talk to them in PMs. You shouldn't have to wait until you are banned to have that happen. You should also not openly discuss this problem in the channel, as hinted in our rules and briefly by User Firewolf before your banning.

ReCreate, it was great having you, but this was your last chance. Goodbye.

... sigh.. It had to be the absolute worst case scenario, didn't it. :/ I understand these things, and I'm sorry, I thought i made that clear recently with the people who I talked to. To be honest, I'm not sure what or why i "argued". I was hoping people could ignore that. It's not that important..

You've been on thin ice for ages and one of the few troublemakers we've had in the channel. You should have known better.

Known better? Sigh. You're just going to taunt me? That's just disappointing to hear from somebody in your position. I'm going to drop it.

He isn't taunting you. Basically he's said that you haven't been learning from your mistakes; it's not too late to do so. You're a smart person.

Sorry, I was trying not to get banned by all means possible, But I got carried away, I guess. I wouldn't do it again, But I expect that doesn't change anything. But what do you mean it's not too late to do so? I'm already banned from rojo's IRC permanently, aren't i?

By that, I mean that it isn't too late to apply it elsewhere. In other chatrooms, the real world, etc~

Hey guys, just a quick update.
I am currently the IRC channel holder, if you have any questions feel free to send me a PM..
Don't be afraid to ask someone on the IRC tough, many members in this channel are people who are there on a daily basis and they actually know more then I do.

I just tried connecting and either it didn't work or the channel was empty. How busy are these rooms normally?

Eeh, hehe, he, eeeh

I'm sorry, I have'n been on it for a few weeks now, i'm guessing the chan server timed out now allowing people to speak, (it's back up tough)

It's not that busy anymore now a days I'm afraid.

Nevermind, I'll keep logging in now and again in the hope that someone else will be online :P

Although the forum is great, it normally lacks the instant back and forth that you can only get in a live environment.

Put simply, we don't have enough members who -also- use IRC for IRC to be active at all times. This is not likely to change soon, not without a massive influx of new blood.

I'm usually always on the Irc, other common IRC goers are Echofireant, Starswifter and Arbitrary as well as a few others. The chat is usually active in some shape or forum so come join us! We need more people to talk about random stuff with. |D

I made a IRC channel on freenode (thats before i knew about this), I think I may have the link to it in my signature somewhere, if not I am going to put it there. :D

Yes, its made on freenode, so its harder to moderate, which is why i am learning about it more, and it is not for random things, its only too discuss the current comic, you will be warned only once before your banned. if you don't discuss the current or previous ten comics. If you try to argue with me, or another op, you will be insta-banned. Also, I am thinking about moving to MIRC.

Sounds dictatorish. Though I seldom jump into IRC, I think I'll stay with good ol' place runned by Rojo.

Yes, I have stopped in the official room, seen a couple of regulars chatting in there, but its too bad there aren't more folks that chat. I guess IRC is a dying thing. I tried finding the freenode room, no luck. Ah well.
